<strong>Dr</strong> <strong>Richard</strong> <strong>Messnarz</strong><br />

<strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Richard</strong> <strong>Messnarz</strong> (rmess@iscn.com) is the Executive Director of <strong>ISCN</strong> LTD. He studied at the<br />

University of Technology Graz and he worked as a researcher and lecturer at this University from<br />

1991 - 1996. In 2 European mobility projects (1993 and 1994) he was involved in the foundation of<br />

<strong>ISCN</strong>, and he became the director of <strong>ISCN</strong> in 1997. He is/has been the technical manager of many<br />

European projects:<br />

He is the general chair of EuroSPI (European Software Process Improvement and Innovation)<br />

He is an ISO 15504 and Automotive SPICE Principal Assessor. He is a founding member of the<br />

INTACS (International Assessor Certification Scheme) Board.<br />

In the EU Project CREDIT project (1998 – 2001) he was responsible for the architecture of the<br />

systems and later became the project leader of the Capability Adviser system (SPICE Assessment<br />

Portal) development. In the EU projects EPI (2005 – 2006) and PLATO (2007-2008) he has been the<br />

project leader for the integratrion of Capability Adviser with a set of LMS (Learning management<br />

Systems) in Europe and Eastern Europe.<br />

He is the editor of 1 IEEE book (Better Software Practice for Business Benefit), 3 books in Springer<br />

LNCS (Lecture Notes in Computer Science Series) about SPI experiences, 3 guest edited books in<br />

the Wiley SPIP (Software Process Improvement in Practice) series, 1 Springer book in the CCIS<br />

(Communications in Computer and Information Science) series about SPI experiences, and recenetly<br />

he edited his first German book which comes out in the D-Punkt Verlag in Spring 2009 which was<br />

co-written with Continental about the experiences for reaching a SPICE level 3 in electronics<br />

projects.<br />

Quality Systems/Assessments Experience<br />

• Key researcher in the Bootstrap methodology who developed a tool and published articles in<br />

Springer about capability profiles in 1991 - 1992 (this part of Bootstrap has been considered<br />

by SPICE / ISO 15504 later)


• As one of the original developers of the Bootstrap assessment methodology he has been<br />

granted a life long honours assessment certificate by the Bootstrap institute in 1994 in Italy.<br />

• Lead assessor/consultant for Bootstrap/SPICE assessments at Robert BOSCH Gmbh<br />

(www.bosch.com, largest automotive supplier in the world), Germany, 1993 - 1998 .<br />

• Lead Assessor / consultant for SPICE assessments at ZF (www.zf.com, one of the largest<br />

automotive suppliers in the world) , Germany, 1998 - now. He is the lead SPICE assessor and<br />

consultant for the central research unit, production sites, and recently for the concern<br />

worldwide.<br />

• Lead assessor / consultant for SPICE for ContiTEMIC (www.temic.com, one of the largest<br />

automotive suppliers in the world) since 2003 .<br />

• Leader of the SOQRATES Group (www.soqrates.de, supported by the Bavarian state) as<br />

SPICE lead assessor / consultant for 8 selected leading Bavarian technology companies in<br />

automotive, banking, and embedded systems in security. This initiative continues under his<br />

guidance from 2004 on a commercial basis (without state funds) and some larger German<br />

firms additionally joining.<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant to the VW concern group on behalf of AUDI<br />

(www.audi.de) for SPICE trial assessments at Audi/VW and their suppliers in 2001, resulting<br />

in a version 1 of the HIS assessment tailoring . This tailoring applies now as an assessment<br />

model for all suppliers of German automotive companies.<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant for Micron Electronic Devices GesmbH, Germany, in<br />

2003 (embedded systems for high price and racing cars).<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor for OneVision , the leading firm in newspaper production systems<br />

(e.g. the Washington Post), in 2003.<br />

• Moderator of the innovation initiative SOQRATES in Bavaria, in which leading German<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant for ZF Sachs since 2004.<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant for ZF Lenksysteme since 2004.<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant for Magna Powertrain since 2005.<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant for T-Systems since 2005.<br />

• Lead SPICE assessor and consultant for Saxonia-Systems since 2008.<br />

In total he has done so far more than 100 project assessments in the last 10 years . He has held a<br />

number of ISO 15504 based courses. He is the project leader of the ISO 15504 Assessment Portal<br />

running at companies like ZF, Continental, Magna, G&D, ISQI, SeppMedd, T-Systems, etc.<br />
