The men of the House of Burgesses hosted a ball on Wednesday evening, December 13, 1769, at the Capitol in Williamsburg, at which a “patriotic Spirit… was most agreeably manifested in the Dress of the Ladies.” Nearly one hundred women wore homespun gowns, in a “lively and striking” illustration of their collective decision to support - 60 -
the “true and essential Interest of their Country.” Reports of this occasion describe a desire for “all Assemblies of American Ladies [to] exhibit a like Example of public Virtue and private Occonomy, so amiably united,” urging readers to reach the same outstanding level of patriotism. 7 The Williamsburg ball was specifically held for the enjoyment of the royal governor of Virginia. “Lord Botetourt,” as he was known, was quite popular and colonists assumed he was opposed to many of the oppressive British policies. A state ball full of homespun gowns seemed to be a statement he would support. However, during his term, he secretly warned British officials to resist colonial efforts for independence. 8 - 61 -
