describe a desire for “all Assemblies <strong>of</strong> <strong>American</strong> Ladies [to]<br />

exhibit a like Example <strong>of</strong> public Virtue and private Occonomy, so amiably<br />

united,” urging readers to reach <strong>the</strong> same outstanding level <strong>of</strong><br />

patriotism. 7<br />

<strong>The</strong> Williamsburg ball was specifically held for <strong>the</strong> enjoyment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

royal governor <strong>of</strong> Virginia. “Lord Botetourt,” as he was known, was<br />

quite popular and colonists assumed he was opposed to many <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> oppressive British policies. A state ball full <strong>of</strong> homespun gowns<br />

seemed to be a statement he would support. However, during his<br />

term, he secretly warned British <strong>of</strong>ficials to resist colonial efforts for<br />

independence. 8<br />
