Zady: A “Made in America” Model
In response to the appalling working conditions, toxic
waste, and disappointing quality of the disposable fashion
industry, two women created an alternative: Zady. Founded
in 2013, Zady is an online retailer offering locally sourced
garments. With a “passion for learning, history, and process,”
Zady and the designers they represent choose to
be “picky about their materials,” collaborating exclusively
with American producers and manufacturers. 2
The company launched its own clothing line with a classically
simple knit sweater in 2014. Available in light gray,
charcoal, and natural wool, the sweater is significant not
because of its aesthetic appeal, but due to its provenance
and patriotic flair. 3 Its manufacturers are steeped in American
heritage; according to Zady, they “tell the story of the
history of the country.” 4 First, the wool is sourced from a
ranch in Oregon, the founder of which was born in a covered
wagon along the Oregon Trail. 5 After the sheep are
sheared, the wool is cleaned, carded, and combed in South
Carolina before being sent to a fifth-generation dye house
