Sasha Aronson MMS Student Marina Budhos District Parent Marc Aronson Maplewood Resident John Glenn Tuscan Parent Michael Paris Maplewood Resident Elizabeth Aaron Clinton PTA Sophie Panzer CHS Student Commented on the social studies curriculum and asked for one that will motivate students more. Shared her opinion about the social studies curriculum and suggested improvement. Thanked the Board for withdrawing the resolution related to social studies in favor of integrating it with ELA. He offered to help with the new curriculum. Spoke about the social studies curriculum and suggested it be more global. Commented on the process of hiring District Management Council and appreciates having heard their proposal. Thanked the Board and Superintendent for their hard work, complimented the Clinton School staff, and highlighted activities and accomplishments at Clinton School. Spoke in support of Mr. Cohen and credited him for her achievements in AP History. DISCUSSION District Goals 2012-13, 2013-14 & 2014-15 Over 200 people responded to the survey regarding district goals. Mr. Giles, Chair of Engagement & Outreach Committee, will summarize all the results after the committees review them, and provided the following highlights: • Focus Groups representing a cross-section of the district were brought together for discussions. • Many respondents asked that the needs of gifted and talented students and students with disabilities be addressed. • It was suggested that curriculum standards be raised to be sure students are challenged. • Respondents would like the district to be known as a top District and not just for its diversity. • Some suggested more creativity and exploration in the secondary schools. • Parents request that teachers use Power School for increased communication between home and school. • Many respondents were requesting hard, objective data from the district. • The Board will receive all comments to review. Mrs. Daugherty read the district’s vision and mission statements. The reading was followed by a discussion among Board members. 10
Committee Reports Policy & Monitoring – Mrs. Daugherty If a contract is approved with District Management Council (DMC), we might be able to work with them regarding monitoring Special Education with regards to student learning, satisfaction with teachers and learners, and ways to achieve cost effectiveness. A suggestion of quarterly reports from DMR during their time in the district was made. The committee is working on a policy to set limitations regarding the appropriate use of social media between staff and students. Finance & Technology – Mr. Eastman The committee discussed Goal 4 with regards to the relationship between taxes and education. To date everything has gone through the Board of School Estimate. If Board of Education elections move to November, it will change the governance structure. Equity & Excellence – Dr. Gaudelli Social studies and English language arts curriculum updates will be integrated. Focus is on the Middle Years Program and course revisions. Negotiations – Ms. Karriem The committee recommends approval of contract with Anthony Sciarillo to work with the Board on the SOMEA contract that expires in June 2013. Dr. Osborne conveyed that he is encouraged to see the Board moving ahead and will negotiate in earnest in hopes of having the new contract approved before the current one expires. Facilities – Mrs. Wren-Hardin The committee met with EI Associates regarding their assessment of our facilities. Summer projects necessitate the closing of the high school for a few days in mid-summer. The committee asks that the Policy committee review the policy regarding corporate sponsorship for clarification. Update Facilities Planning Mrs. Schneider gave an update on facilities planning throughout the district. She reviewed the information received from EI Associates and laid out a timeline for developing a long range capital plan. The plan will be developed over the next few months with input from EI and the Facilities Committee. 2011-12 Satisfaction Survey Results – Mr. Roth Using a power point presentation, Mr. Roth gave an overview of the survey results [power point on file in Board Secretary’s office]. The presentation was followed by a discussion among Board members. 11
