Letter from the FHF President – Phil Schofield
Welcome to the 44th CalCup tournament! This is my first year as Field Hockey
Federation President. I would like to thank you all for coming and I hope that your
time here in Moorpark is positive. We are all working very hard to make CalCup the
best possible experience. Our group of dedicated volunteers has been planning
and working tirelessly for many months to get ready for this weekend. Thanks also
to USA field hockey for their continued support, we are pleased to be a sanctioned
event.
During my first few weeks as President it seemed as though there was a new crisis
each week. None of them were more serious than the water restrictions we now
face in California. Water is a very big issue in our state and restrictions are getting
tighter. We played both of our last two seasons essentially dry. There is no real end
in sight for the drought. This is a troubling situation for our sport in California. Recycled water and low use surfaces
must be part of any future for us. We need to evaluate collecting and re-using the water that we put on the field and
also using recycled water.
We are also faced with the changes in our player population. We have our kids growing up and heading off to college,
we will lose some important seniors this year. Some will continue to play hockey in the NCAA. Jessie Niccum will
play for the University of the Pacific, Alexandra Grabow and Samara Spence will play for the University of California
Berkeley, Tiffany Cobb will play for Wilson College in Pennsylvania. Maddie Oswald will play for Georgetown and
Brooke Reese will play for Yale. Riya Garg and Colleen Edwards are finalizing their playing decisions. Others will
graduate and pursue other interests, hopefully to return home and play with us again in the coming years. While
there is no NCAA Field Hockey for men, Doug Allison from the Bulldogs is exploring playing hockey and studying
in Australia. Other boys are also looking at studying and playing abroad.
California is gaining ground in the US Field Hockey world, sending more kids to play in the Futures National
Championship. While San Diego and the Bay Area are always well represented, we sent 6 local girls last year. Alex,
Jessie and Samara were selected as well as Hannah Schofield, Iliana Cabral and Rachel Brown. We hope to send
even more this coming year. Another example of our California kids representing us across the US is the RUSH Field
Hockey club under Brian Schledorn. RUSH was ranked #13 in the nation in the under 19 division for their successes
at tournaments around the country. California was also represented in the recent women’s junior national squad.
Atherton’s Callie Goodman traveled to Holland and Belgium to play with the US Women’s U17 team.
Of the 29 men listed on the USMNT roster, 19 of them are from California and 12 are from our own Field Hockey
Federation. Our local boys were also well represented on the Junior High Performance rosters this summer with 23
local boys invited to train with the US National Team coaches and players in Chula Vista. The bulk of the squads
came from the Ventura County clubs, the Bulldogs, Roadrunners and Coyotes. The boys reported that the High
Performance camps were very positive development experiences.
We continue to open our homes to teams from the UK and from Australia and we continue to play against travelling
teams from around the world. We played the state team from Baja California during our fall season. Thanks very
much to everyone who helped host an Australian player and thanks to those who were part of this great experience.
I appreciate the opportunity to serve you as your FHF President and I look forward to the years to come. I thank
you all for your participation and I thank all of the volunteers who make CalCup happen. Without you none of this
would be possible.
