On behalf of Queens Park Football Club, I have
much pleasure in welcoming Gordon Thomson and
his fellow Directors, Brown Ferguson and his
Coaching Staff and the Players and Supporters of
Stenhousemuir Football Club to Hampden Park for
our SPFL Division 1 play-off (1st leg) match this
evening.
I have no doubt at all that this will be a significant
challenge for Queens Park but one that we very
much look forward to. It is a slightly unusual match
in that the two Clubs have not opposed each other
for several years therefore to some extent there
will be an “unknown factor” involved but I’m sure
that it will be a highly competitive contest.
I very much hope that you all enjoy the match.
A Word from the Gaffer.
Welcome to Hampden for the first leg
of the SPFL League 1 Play Off Final, our
first play off final since 2007.
This is our final home game of the
season and on behalf of the team, I
would like to thank everyone for their
support both home and away.
Saturday’s game was tense for both
teams with so much at stake. We were
delighted with our late winner which
sets us up for a tough couple of games
with tonight’s opposition
Stenhousemuir.
Both teams go into this game on the
back of games going to extra time,
however, I am sure that both teams
realise the importance of the next two
games and will relish the chance to
play in League 1 next year.
I look forward to welcoming you back
to Hampden at the start of next
season, with some new faces and some
more great games to watch.
Have a great summer and enjoy the
game.
Head Coach.

When They Met 61 Years Ago
2 January 1954 - Queen’s Park 4 Stenhousemuir 0
Queen’s Park and this evening’s opponents Stenhousemuir have met on numerous
occasions in the Scottish League since 1922, with both clubs having their share of victories.
One of Queen’s best wins against the Warriors came in a Division B match on Saturday 2
January 1954.
As was the tradition in Scotland at the time, teams played on both New Year’s Day and the
following day. On the first two days of 1954, Queen’s Park faced Third Lanark and
Stenhousemuir, with both games at Hampden Park.
The Ne’erday derby with Thirds ended in a 1-1 draw, although, on the balance of play,
Queen’s should have had two points rather than only one.
No one knew quite what to expect against promotion-minded Stenhousemuir on the
following day. Queen’s Park were regarded as being a somewhat unpredictable outfit at
the time. Thankfully for the Spiders’ fans in the crowd of 6,000, Queen’s turned in one of
their better performances and the Larbert men were unable to match the home side’s skill
and opportunism.
The opening stages of the match were fairly dull but once Queen’s got into their stride,
Stenhousemuir had no answer. The opening goal came in 29 minutes when Junior Omand
squeezed home a Charlie Church cross at the near post. Goal number two came in 69
minutes. Omand was again the scorer, racing through on a Max Murray pass to fire home
a splendid goal. Ron McKinven added to the Spiders’ lead in 80 minutes with a great rightfoot
shot and, five minutes later, Bobby Dalziel put the icing on the cake with an angled
shot from close range.
Star man for Queen’s Park was Willie “Junior” Omand, who posed a constant threat to the
Stenhousemuir defence. The match programme remarked, “Only Omand of our forwards
has not scored. We really look upon ‘Junior’ as one to make openings rather than cap
them”. Junior’s response was to score two fine opportunist goals.
The teams on that January afternoon were: -
Frank McCrossan
On This Day
Queen’s Park - Hastie Weir; Ian Harnett and Neil Dewar; Bert Cromar, Andy Bell and Willie
Hastie; Charlie Church, Ron McKinven, Max Murray, Bobby Dalziel and Junior Omand.
Stenhousemuir – George Brown; Alex Paterson and Peter Smith; Colin McLean, David
Paton and Bobby Wilson; Bobby Thomson and Jimmy Silcock; John Clifford; John
Cuthbertson and Alex Anderson.
Events Elsewhere on 2 January 1954
In Division C (South-West Section), the Queen’s Park Strollers went down 6-2 to
Stranraer’s first eleven at Stair Park.
The BBC agreed to pay £1,500 to televise the 1954 FA Cup Final. This was an increase of
fifty per cent on the previous year.
The St Andrew’s Society of Glasgow protested against “certain inaccurate terms” in the
Queen’s Christmas Day broadcast from New Zealand. They objected particularly to the
reference to Queen Elizabeth 1 of England as a forebear of the present Queen, where
her ancestor was in fact Mary Queen of Scots, as well as to the suggestion that the
Queen was undertaking her voyage around the world as the Queen of England rather
than the Queen of the United Kingdom.
The Brazilian FA decided to change their national colours from blue and white to yellow
and green to stimulate the players.
As was the custom on the first Saturday of the New Year, a toast was give to the
Monarch and all visitors at the end of every league game played in England. The toast
was drunk in champagne from a loving cup presented before the war to all members of
the Football League by Sir Francis Joseph of Stoke City.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court, a 45 year-old tram driver was fined £10 for driving a tramcar in
Farmloan Road, Rutherglen while under the influence of drink and causing the tram to
collide with a Corporation bus.
Three Burmese circus elephants were frightened by a Pomeranian dog at Olympia in
London and crashed into a sideshow, bringing it down on a showman and his wife. The
woman, who was only 34 inches tall, was taken to hospital with broken ribs. The dog
was trampled to death by the elephants.
West German government estimated that there were still over 96,000 German prisoners
of war in Russia.
A spectator grappled with Bolton goalkeeper Stan Hanson on the pitch at Anfield. He
had rushed at the ‘keeper shouting, “That was a goal. You know it was” after the referee
turned down a Liverpool penalty claim. Surprisingly, Liverpool police did not charge the
fan.
There was concern that Mrs Dale, radio’s favourite soap character, might not last out
1954. BBC executives were unnerved by an audience drop from four million to three
million. In the event, Mrs Dale and her diary lasted a further fifteen years.

Alloa Athletic. The journeyman forward has scored goals for every club he has been on the
books of and he has 7 to his name this season for The Warriors.
We extend a warm welcome to Hampden
today to Brown Ferguson and his
Stenhousemuir squad for our first leg
League One play off final.
Stenny reached this stage courtesy of a 4-
2 aggregate win over East Fife in the semi
finals. Following a 1-1 draw in the first leg
at Bayview The Warriors ran out 3-1
winners after extra time on Saturday.
Kieran Miller had given them the lead in
the 2nd minute before Jonathan Page
levelled for the The Fifers with only
minutes of the match remaining.
Stenny won the game and booked their
place in the play off final courtesy of extra
time goals from Jamie McCormack and ex
Queen's Park man Craig Sutherland.
The Manager - Brown Ferguson
Brown took over the reigns at Ochilview as
Key Players
Caretaker manager in February 2015
before being given the position on a
permanent basis in April.
Prior to going into management Ferguson
had a playing career which saw him
represent a number of senior clubs in
Scotland.
Having started off with East Stirlingshire in
1998 he went on to play for Alloa Athletic
(twice), Hamilton Accies, Partick Thistle
before ending his playing career at Stenny.
Since taking over as manager in February
he has led the side in 15 games; winning 3,
drawing 3 and losing 9 giving him a win
percentage of 20%.
Stewart Greacen
33 year old centre back Greacen began his Career at Rangers as a
youth player before going on to play for Airdrionians, Livingston,
Queen of the South, Greenock Morton (twice), Derry City (twice)
and Gelntoran before arriving at Ochilview in
January 2014. Stewart’s experience is an
invaluable asset for The Warriors.
Martin Grehan
Striker Grehan joined Stenny in the summer of 2014 having
previously played for Dundonald Bluebell, Motherwell, Fofar
Athletic, Striling Albion, Partick Thistle, Stranraer (twice) and
Colin McMenamin
Prolific goalscorer McMenamin joined Stenny in the summer of 2014
having previously played for 11 other clubs. McMenamin is another
who could aptly be described as a journeyman of the game and like
fellow striker Grehan he has a scored goals wherever he has been,
most notably 23 goals in 46 appearances for Gretna, 20 goals in 44
appearances for Ross County and 21 goals in 80 games at Dundee.
Keith McAllister
Imagine that you ran a cinema in the town and someone
came up to the door and said that they ran the cinema
down the road and they wanted in for nothing. You’d
chase them. Or if you had a bakery and the guy from the
bakery across the street came in and thought that it would
be acceptable for him to take some of your stock without
paying simply because he had a bakery too. You’d be over
the counter (age and infirmity permitting) and send him
briskly on his way. Yet, in football, this is not the case.
I’ve written before about the crazy situation we have in
football where a huge host of people think that because
they are involved in the game they can simply come to
watch a game without paying. The reason that my dander
is up (a situation that is cause for celebration at my
advanced age) is that we have a big game tonight and I just
know that there will be a queue like an execution to uplift
free tickets. Now I have no problem whatsoever with
anyone who puts something into this fine club, such as
sponsors, ex-players and coaches, coming in with our
blessing.
But there is a line to be drawn. Particularly when there are
cancellations or on nights like tonight, we’ll have been
besieged by those looking for free tickets. It’s just not right.
I’ve been in the QP office on occasion and seen the
requests for tickets flood in, and I’ve seen some people
make a bit of a scene when their personal requests for
tickets due to some tenuous link to either QP, the
opposition or no link whatsoever are rebuffed. I
particularly remember one woman demand, yes DEMAND,
that someone from the Queen’s Park office head off to look
for her father who assured her that he’d arrange for free
tickets to be left for her and her entourage. Six people
were to be let in free because this woman’s father was the
manager of the opposition. He wasn’t taking her ‘phone
calls, so she expected someone to go looking for him, and
this is when our office was in the portacabins in Somerville
Drive. She was politely told that there was no one available
to do that. My admiration for the member of staff who
dealt with her, increased immeasurably. I would
have dealt with that situation disastrously. She
would have ended up slapping me and there
would have been a strongly worded letter of
complaint going to the President. I am not a
political animal.
I remember a few years ago, two clubs in our
division who were two of the poorest supported,
sent round an e-mail to every club in Scotland
saying that they would not be providing free
tickets for anyone. Everyone had to pay to
watch the game. It was only two teams out of 42
and I wonder how long that policy ran. Hopefully
it is still in place today.
For a Queen’s home match, the money coming
through the turnstiles isn’t great. From our fairly
dismal average of 500 or so enlightened and
handsome individuals, you can deduct full
members and season ticket holders. A fair
number take advantage of our excellent
concession price, meaning that auld yins and
students get in for £2.00 and wee yins get in for a
pound if they bring an adult. That leaves a gey
few actually paying top whack. Without knowing
the numbers and having never asked, I’ll take a
stab at about the 150 mark paying £12.00. Yes,
it will be more than that tonight, but how many
will be blagging their way in? 50? That’s 50
times £12 = £600. Not much if you are Celtic or
the like, but that pays for an away bus for
Queen’s.
So, why is it that football permits this nonsense
to endure? Do we not need the money? Are we
afraid that we’ll offend someone? I know that
I’m peeing against the wind with this, and I’ve
relinquished my humble place of power at this
most wonderful of clubs so I’m in no position to
influence anything, but if there was one small
change that I’d like to see at this level of football,
where 300 is a good crowd for some teams, I’d
decree that everyone pays.
I go back to my initial analogies. Any business
that feels that it can afford to give away its
product is not going to stay in a healthy state for
long. Football at our level is on its uppers. I
would love every club to be united in saying, “I
don’t care who you are; if you’re not putting
something into my club, you should be paying
in.”
And with that, I bid you farewell.

Arbroath Highlights
The long friendship between Queen’s Park FC and Middlesex Wanderers AFC will be
renewed this weekend when we welcome them to Hampden on their 2015 Glasgow
Tour.
When the Richmond Town Association F.C., which had developed from the Old
Boys team of the British School in Richmond, Surrey, failed financially after undertaking
a tour of France, two members, brothers Bob and Horace Alaway, formed a successor
club, Richmond Town Wanderers, in 1905 with the initial intention of a farewell tour.
However, the club flourished, pursuing its mission of spreading football to countries
where it was less developed than in England. By 1912, it had affiliated to the Middlesex
County Football Association, adopted the name Middlesex Wanderers, and had begun
to restrict membership of its touring teams to players with county representative
honours or better. The club's constitution set out its remit as:
To promote a good fellowship among football clubs and other sporting
organisations throughout the world.
To send teams of British footballers on tours abroad.
To play occasional football games in the British Isles and such other games as the
Executive Committee may approve. [3]
Many former Queen’s Park players have benefited from the Wanderers tours and we
are delighted to be able to play host to their tour. Wanderers will kick off their tour
with a challenge match against a Dundee United side at Lesser Hampden with a 10:30
am kick off.
On Sunday afternoon the Wanderers will be playing a Queen’s Select XI on Sunday (17th
May) at Lesser Hampden with a 3pm kick off.
While the Wanderers tour for 2016, Ghana, may be slightly warmer and further to
travel, we hope they enjoy the Scottish hospitality this weekend.
