FROM THE RABBI…RENEWAL
Why do we
find karpas,
greens, on
the Pesach Seder
plate? In my view,
the greens represent
the power of
renewal. Out of
the apparently bar-
ren earth rise green shoots, emerging
over time into the leafy plants that fix
nitrogen in the soil, cleanse the air of
carbon dioxide and other toxins, and
give us oxygen to breathe and food
to eat. So common that we may take
their existence for granted, the greens
are life giving. Their cycle of annual
PARTICIPATORY PRAYER / Tefilah
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE ............................................................................................................ by Gail Weinstein
am a Zionist.
I I have never
known the world
without the modern
State of Israel.
I can recall Israel
in its infancy —
the pioneers, the
Kibbutzniks — and
their dreams for a Jewish state,
a Jewish homeland. I remember
my grandparents being glued to
their black and white TVs, cursing
Nasser in 1956. I remember the Six
Day War and the pride it brought
to Jews worldwide, especially
American Jews. We were proud
that Jews could fight so decisively.
From 1967 onward Jews would no
longer be viewed as underdogs, but
through hard work, true grit, passion,
and smarts, “Never Again”
would Jews not have a country or
an army. The Six Day War opened
doors left closed after World War
II as Holocaust programs were introduced
into universities. I remember
the Yom Kippur War, going to
synagogue knowing that Israel was
once again attacked — praying and
holding my breath that Israel would
emerge victorious.
I remember my joy upon my first
visit to Israel, realizing that I was
fortunate to be in Israel, fulfilling the
dreams of my grandparents, greatgrandparents,
and all those who
came before me, for whom Israel
was always a dream, a wish. I vowed
that this would not be my only visit
to Israel, indeed I have returned six
times. Each visit always fills me with
a feeling of being at home; of being
comfortable and unafraid. There is
always something “new” to see in
Israel…even if it is a “dig” uncovering
history of 2000 years ago.
I was determined that my sons
would also love and be proud of
Israel. At our holiday tables, Israel is
front and center during our discussions.
They too have visited Israel
more than once. They believe in
and understand the importance of
Israel to the Jewish people worldwide.
To me, the modern State of Israel
is indeed a miracle. Nevertheless,
too often we are now witnessing
Israel, a sovereign nation, under attack
by the international community.
We hear calls for anti-Israel
boycotts, divestment, and sanctions;
too often, Israel’s legitimacy
is questioned on the international
stage, in the UN, the media and
on college campuses. As President
of The Emanuel Synagogue I have
introduced, Israel Update – Good
News, weekly during my Shabbat
announcements. Our weekly Tuesday
E-News features Ahavat Yisrael.
This has been done to bring Israel
into focus, to share with the congregation
all that is good within Israel,
all that we can be proud of.
I wish to share with you
the following article by Rabbi
Dr. Daniel Gordis, Senior Vice
President and Koret Distinguished
Fellow at the Shalem Center in
Jerusalem. His book Saving Israel
won the 2009 National Jewish Book
Award.
I believe this article sums up
the relationship between Israel and
American Jews today. Please read the
article and use it as a point of discussion
during your Seder. Think about
Israel — and think about visiting
Israel…soon. Experience a Miracle.
Wishing each of us a Zessin Pesach.
PREPARING FOR PESACH: HELPFUL GUIDELINES
The Torah prohibits the ownership of hametz (leaven)
during Pesah. Therefore, we arrange for the sale of the
hametz to a non-Jew. The transfer, mekhirat hametz, is accomplished
by appointing an agent, usually the rabbi, to
handle the sale. It is valid and legal transfer of ownership.
At the end of the holiday, the agent arranges for the reversion
of ownership of the now-permitted hametz. If ownership
of the hametz was not transferred before the holiday,
the use of this hametz is prohibited after the holiday as well
(hametz she-avar alav ha-Pesah).
Since the Torah prohibits the eating of hametz during
Pesah, and since many common foods contain some admixture
of hametz, guidance is necessary when shopping and
preparing for Pesah.
During the eight days of Pesah, hametz cannot lose its
identity in an admixture. Therefore, the minutest amount
of hametz renders the whole admixture hametz and its use
on Pesah is prohibited. However, during the rest of the
year, hametz follows the normal rules of admixture, i.e., it
loses its identity in an admixture of one part hametz and
sixty parts of non-hametz (batel be-shishim). This affords us
the opportunity to differentiate between foods purchased
before and during Pesah.
What follows is a general guideline. However, your
rabbi should be consulted when any doubt arises. Kosher
le-Pesah labels that do not bear the name of a rabbi or one
of the recognized symbols of rabbinic supervision, or which
are not integral to the package, should not be used without
consulting your rabbi.
PROHIBITED FOODS
Prohibited foods include the following: leavened bread,
cakes, biscuits, crackers, cereal, coffees containing cereal
derivatives, wheat, barley, oats, spelt, rye, and all liquids
containing ingredients or flavors made from grain alcohol.
Most Ashkenazic authorities have added the following
foods (kitniyot) to the above list: rice, corn, millet, legumes
(beans and peas; however, string beans are permitted).
The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards has ruled
unanimously that peanuts and peanut oil are permissible.
Some Ashkenazic authorities permit, while others forbid,
the use of legumes in a form other than their natural state,
for example, corn sweeteners, corn oil, soy oil. Sephardic
authorities permit the use of all of the above. Consult your
rabbi for guidance in the use of these products.
PERMITTED FOODS
A. The following foods require no kosher le-Pesah label if
purchased prior to Pesah: unopened packages or containers
of natural coffee without cereal additives (However,
be aware that coffees produced by General Foods are not
kosher for Passover unless marked KP); sugar, pure tea (not
herbal tea); salt (not iodized); pepper; natural spices; frozen
fruit juices with no additives; frozen (uncooked) vegetables
(for legumes see above); milk; butter; cottage cheese; cream
cheese; ripened cheeses such as cheddar (hard), muenster
(semi-soft) and Camembert (soft); frozen (uncooked) fruit
(with no additives); baking soda.
B. The following foods require no kosher le-Pesah label if
purchased before or during Pesah: Fresh fruits and vegetables
(for legumes see above), eggs, fresh fish and fresh
meat.
C. The following foods require a kosher le-Pesah label if
purchased before or during Pesah: All baked products
(matzah, cakes, matzah flour, farfel, matzah meal, and any
products containing matzah); canned or bottled fruit juices
(These juices are often clarified with kitniyot which are
not listed among the ingredients. However, if one knows
there are no such agents, the juice may be purchased prior
to Pesah without a kosher le-Pesah label; canned tuna (since
tuna, even when packed in water, has often been processed
in vegetable broth and/or hydrolyzed protein-however,
if it is known that the tuna is packed exclusively in water,
without any additional ingredients or additives, it may be
purchased without a kosher le-Pesah label); wine; vinegar;
liquor; oils; dried fruits; candy; chocolate flavored milk; ice
cream; yogurt and soda.
D. The following processed foods (canned, bottled or
frozen), require a kosher le-Pesah label if purchased during
Pesah: milk, butter, juices, vegetables, fruit, milk products,
spices, coffee, tea, and fish, as well as all foods listed in
Category C.
DETERGENTS: If permitted during the year, powdered
and liquid detergents do not require a kosher le-Pesah label.
MEDICINE: Since hametz binders are used in many pills,
the following guidelines should be followed: If the medicine
is required for life sustaining therapy, it may be used
on Pesah. If it is not for life sustaining therapy, some authorities
permit, while others prohibit. Consult your rabbi.
In all cases, capsules are preferable to pills.
DISHES AND UTENSILS
Kashering of Utensils: The process of kashering utensils
depends on how the utensils are used. According to
halakhah, leaven can be purged from a utensil by the same
process in which it was absorbed in the utensil (ke-voleo
kakh poleto). Therefore, utensils used in cooking are kashered
by boiling, those used in broiling are kashered by fire
and heat, and those used only for cold food are kashered by
rinsing.

A. Earthenware (china, pottery, etc.) may not be kashered.
However, fine translucent chinaware which has
not been used for over a year may be used if scoured and
cleaned in hot water.
B. Metal (wholly made of metal) Utensils Used in Fire
(spit, broiler) must first be thoroughly scrubbed and
cleansed and then made as hot as possible. Those used for
cooking or eating (silverware, pots) must be thoroughly
scrubbed and cleaned and completely immersed in boiling
water. Pots should have water boiled in them which will
overflow the rim.
The utensils should not be used for a period of at least
24 hours between cleaning and the immersions of boiling
water. Metal baking utensils cannot be kashered.
C. Ovens and Ranges: Every part that comes in contact
with food must be thoroughly scrubbed and cleaned. Then,
oven and range should be heated as hot as possible for a
half hour. If there is a broil setting, use it. Self-cleaning ovens
should be scrubbed and cleaned and then put through
the self-cleaning cycle. Continuous ovens must be kashered
the same way as regular ovens.
Microwave Ovens, which do not cook the food by
means of heat, should be cleaned, and then a cup of water
should be placed inside. Then the oven should be turned
on until the water disappears. A microwave oven that has a
browning element cannot be kashered for Pesach.
D. Glassware: Authorities disagree as to the method for
kashering drinking utensils. One opinion requires soaking
in water for three days, changing the water every 24 hours.
The other opinions requires only a thorough scrubbing
before Pesach, or putting them through a dishwasher.
E. Dishwasher: After not using the machine for a period
of 24 hours, a full cycle with detergent should be run.
F. Electrical Appliances: If the parts that come into
contact with hametz are removable, they can be kashered
in the appropriate way (if metal, follow the rules for metal
utensils). If the parts are not removable, the appliance cannot
be kashered. (All exposed parts should be thoroughly
cleaned.)
G. Tables, Closets and Counters: If used with hametz,
they should be thoroughly cleaned and covered, and then
they may be used.
H. Kitchen Sink: A metal sink can be kashered by thoroughly
cleaning and then pouring boiling water over it. A
porcelain sink should be cleaned and a sink rack used. If,
however, dishes are to be soaked in a porcelain sink, a dish
basin must be used.
I. Hametz and Non-Passover Utensils: Non-Passover
dishes, pots and hametz whose ownership has been transferred,
should be separated, locked up or covered, and
marked in order to prevent accidental use.
SELLING HAMETZ
The Torah instructs that in observing Pesach all leaven must be removed from one’s home or destroyed. To protect against
excessive waste and financial hardship, the Rabbis permit the individual to sell one’s hametz to a non-Jew until Passover is
complete. It is traditional at that time to make a contribution to the Maot Hittim, the Passover Fund, which helps
needy Jews purchase the necessities to celebrate Pesach. To arrange for the sale of your hametz, please see Rabbi Small
or Mr. Pinchover in person, or submit this declaration to the Emanuel office by Sunday, March 24, 2013.
SELLING HAMETZ DECLARATION/PASSOVER FUND CONTRIBUTION
I, , empower and permit Rabbi David J. Small to act in my
stead and in my behalf to sell all hametz (leaven) possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly, and
to lease all places wherein the above products may be found, especially at the premises located at
. To this I affix my signature on this day.
NOTES FROM THE CANTOR
WHAT DO I DO ALL DAY?
by Hazzan Sanford Cohn
remember, as
I a child, wondering
what my
mother did all
day while I was at
school. Like most
school-age children,
I kissed her
goodbye at 7:30 or 8 in the morning
and didn’t see or hear from her until
I returned home in the afternoon.
What did she do all day to fill her
day?
I sense that many people have the
same question about me in my job as
Cantor of the congregation. Sure, the
Shabbat regulars see me on Friday
and Saturday evenings and on Shabbat
morning, leading services and
guiding our B’ney Mitzvah through
their big day, and those who attend
weekday minyan know that I’m there
davening with them several mornings
and afternoons through the week. But
what do I do when I’m not officiating
or participating in a service?
One week in January I began to
keep a log of my days. I note that
a large portion of my time is spent
with correspondence and planning.
The former refers to phone calls and
emails with congregants, especially
with Bar/Bat Mitzvah parents, and
with colleagues, both within the synagogue
and in the Cantors Assembly.
I also spend time planning for upcoming
services, special programs or
classes. This usually requires researching
and choosing the right music for
a particular occasion and preparing
materials, such as song sheets, musical
arrangements and arranging facilities
needs with the Administrator. My
mornings are also filled with meeting
with adult congregants who are
learning a Haftara or other skill or in
recording Torah or Haftara passages
for adults and youth as they prepare to
participate in our services, including
those special services hosted by the
various arms of the congregation.
As a member of our clergy team,
I am closely involved with every lifecycle
event of our Emanuel family:
b’rit mila, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, weddings,
funerals and shiva. Not only do I
provide the music for these events, I
often meet with families before and
afterward to give support during these
important moments.
While not a duty of most cantors,
I am the unofficial proofreader
of much of our printed matter. This
includes the programs that most Bar/
Bat Mitzvah families provide, as well
as the weekly Emanuel Essentials and
bi-monthly Everything Emanuel that
our Communications Coordinator,
Susan Kurtis, produces. I enjoy doing
this and seem to have the necessary
eye for detail.
During most of my office hours,
I listen to a variety of Jewish music,
from traditional cantorial chant to
modern prayer settings to Jewish
choral music. Doing so keeps my
ear attuned to our musical tradition
and gives me ideas of what may or
may not work for our congregation.
Whenever possible, I also learn new
music that may be used for our services
and programs.
Most weeks I attend a planning
and evaluation meeting of our senior
staff, and Rabbi Small and I meet
more frequently to discuss a variety
of topics and plans for our congregation.
The two of us meet at least
once weekly with Moshe Pinchover
as well, to ensure the smooth flow
our Shabbat services and to update
each other on pastoral issues facing
our congregants. Whenever we have
congregants who are ill, I visit them
in hospitals and rehab facilities to give
them hope and strength, often praying
with them or chanting a Psalm to
help in their healing of spirit and soul.
Three afternoons each week are
devoted to Bar/Bat Mitzvah lessons. I
generally work with 13 to 18 students
each week for a half hour each, for a
full year before their Bar/Bat Mitzvah
service. In addition, I meet with Mr.
Pinchover’s students periodically to
make sure that I have contact with
all of our students. In the last month
The Convocation at the
Jewish Theological Seminary,
originally planned for October
29, 2012, cancelled due to
Hurricane Sandy, has been
re-scheduled for Thursday
afternoon, June 6, 2013. At
this time Hazzan Cohn will
be among 26 members of the
Cantors Assembly receiving an
honorary Doctorate of Music.
If you would be interested
in attending, please contact
Hazzan Cohn.
of their preparation, I rehearse with
them in the Chapel and Sanctuary to
help them feel more comfortable in
those spaces. While most of our lesson
time is spent in the mechanics of
learning and perfecting the chanting
of Torah, Haftara and liturgical portions,
my favorite parts of the lessons
are getting to know the students as
individuals and helping them understand
the meaning of the texts they
are chanting.
On Sunday mornings, I feel like
I’m on roller skates, speeding from
minyan to breakfast to 6th grade
trope class, on to music classes with
grades 5, 4 and 3, respectively, then
leading their T’fila service together,
concluding with a half hour rehearsal
of the Junior Choir. As if that’s not
enough to exhaust anyone, I volunteer
on Sunday afternoons as Conductor
of HaZamir Hartford at the JCC.
Finally, I participate in and prepare
for a variety of committee meetings,
choir rehearsals and adult education
classes that must take place in the
evenings, to accommodate everyone’s
schedules. My evenings also include
more correspondence that may have
accumulated throughout the day.
I hope that you have enjoyed this
glimpse into my professional life. The
variety of activities that fill my week
has always been a source of satisfaction
and fulfillment for me in my
sacred calling. Best wishes to all for a
happy and meaningful Pesah.
No Jewish People Without Israel — Why the future of American Judaism,
as we know it, depends on the survival of the Jewish state.
by Daniel Gordis
Why do Jews lie at the Passover
Seder? Across the world every
year, we Jews recite the famous line:
“Next year in Jerusalem.” But how
many American Jews actually mean it?
The vast majority of them clearly do
not plan to live in Israel, which is the
liturgy’s obvious meaning. Why, then,
proceed with the charade? On this
pivotal night, why celebrate freedom
by uttering a lie?
Truths come in different forms.
“Next year in Jerusalem” is not about
a plan, but about a dream. And uttering
this phrase has long been the Jewish
people’s way of keeping in mind
both an ethereal ideal and a common
national yearning. Jerusalem served
as a compass during prayer, but, more
importantly, it made for flights of
national fancy. For two millennia, as
Jews imagined their people’s future,
one place occupied center-stage. That
place was Zion.
As is increasingly apparent, however,
the times are changing. Ours is the
first generation in which the centrality
of Zion in Jewish dreams is beginning
to fade. It is fading rapidly, and we
know why. Part of it has to do with
the fact that Israel’s supporters have
framed the conversation about the
Jewish State in terms of the conflict
with the Palestinians. Even among
knowledgeable and committed Jews,
an oral Rorschach test in response to
the word “Israel” evokes responses
such as “checkpoints,” “occupation,”
or “settlements” — as though the conflict
were all that Israel is about.
In response to that, a younger
generation for whom war is anathema
and occupation is morally unbearable
has begun to drift away. Part of that is
understandable, but only to an extent.
For even when faced with the tragic
and interminable conflict with the
Palestinians, is it too much to hope
that Jews would still find much worth
celebrating when they think of Israel?
When the revival of Jewish sovereignty
in their ancestral land evokes only
images of war, and the ingathering
of exiles after 2,000 years evokes no
awe, when the rebirth of the Jewish
language elicits little sense of wonder,
Jews have lost sight of the real significance
of Israel’s re-creation.
But this is precisely where we find
ourselves. Young Jews today, discouraged
by Israeli policies that they cannot
abide, either explicitly or tacitly
join those who condemn the Jewish
State. But they do not recognize that
the de-legitimization of Israel will
affect them, too, that they, too, have
a personal stake in Israel, no matter
how discomfited they may be by some
of its policies. What happens to Israel
will affect not only Jews in Beersheva
or Tel Aviv, but Jews in New York,
Boston, London, and Buenos Aires.
Why that is the case has to become
part of the Zionist conversation,
which can no longer be only about
Palestinians and occupation, borders
and war.
Evidence that a new conversation
about the Jewish state is long overdue is
everywhere. The distance between Diaspora
Jews (mostly, but not exclusively,
American Jews) and the Jewish state is
painfully apparent. A recent study asked
American Jews if the destruction of Israel
would be a personal tragedy for them.
The study asked about the destruction
of Israel, not its gradual disappearance
or slow withering away. Eighty percent
of Jewish Americans 65 years of age
and older said that Israel’s destruction
would, indeed, be a personal tragedy
for them. But amazingly, 50 percent
of those 35 years old and younger said
that Israel’s destruction would not be
a personal tragedy. Similarly, a 2011
study of American Jews showed that
the younger the cohort, the lower their
support for Israel.
The same phenomenon began to
surface even among young rabbinical
students; outside the Orthodox community,
increasing numbers of mainstream
Zionist rabbinical students
reported that expressing support for
Israel on their campuses had become
a lonely proposition.
In an era in which American Jews
can proudly espouse any political
position they wish, why are so many
young American Jews turning away
from Israel? Why has Zion shifted
away from the core of their national
sensibilities and dreams? The most
obvious reason, as stated, is the ongoing
conflict with the Palestinians.
These young people have no memory
of Israel’s past fragility, or of a time
before the international community’s
endorsement of Palestinian national
aspirations. Israel’s re-creation and
even the 1967 and 1973 wars, when
the Arab nations pledged to “push the
Jews into the sea,” are ancient history.
Today, what these young Jews see
is a power imbalance. One side is an
internationally recognized democracy
with nuclear weapons, a worldclass
army, and a robust economy.
The other side has none of these.
In what is a radical departure from
the mindset of their parents, these
young Americans’ earliest memories
of Israel are of the Intifada, of heavily
armed Israeli soldiers arrayed against
young Palestinian boys “only” throwing
rocks. Sensitive to the underdog
everywhere, and with a deep-seated
belief in fairness, they insisted and
continue to insist upon balancing the
scales. The Palestinians, they decided,
needed a state.
Palestinian statehood, however,
has been slow in coming. To be sure,
some of these young American Jews
understand the impasse stems from
the Palestinian refusal to recognize
Israel and continuing insistence that
any political settlement with the
Israelis allow for the return of the
now-millions of people classified as
“refugees” by UNRWA (the United
Nations Relief and Works Agency).
Israel, in turn, understands that with
the immigration of those original refugees
and their descendants the state
(continued on page 9)
8

From the President, continued
would cease to be Jewish — which is
precisely what the Palestinians intend.
At the same time, these young
Jews have also intuited that the Palestinians
will not change. Therefore,
because they cannot bear a conflict
that simply cannot be resolved, they
conclude that something has to give
— and if the Palestinians will not
give, then that something has to be
Israel. But then, as this thinking goes,
if Israel refuses to budge, it is Israel
that is responsible for the impasse.
Faced with a choice between loyalty
to their humanitarian values or to
their parents’ Zionism, they have chosen
the former.
That point, of course, is not new.
Peter Beinart, former editor of The
New Republic and author of the recent
book The Crisis of Zionism, has
made the point extensively; perhaps
the most quoted line from his muchdiscussed
New York Review of Books
was his assertion that “For several
decades, the Jewish establishment has
asked American Jews to check their
liberalism at Zionism’s door, and now,
to their horror, they are finding that
many young Jews have checked their
Zionism instead.”
From the Rabbi, continued
renewal makes a profound statement about the power of renewal in all aspects
of life.
How did the slave generation find the courage to leave the only place
they had known? Where did they find the will to move away from the narrow
lanes of Goshen and march to the Sea of Reeds and beyond? Somehow,
each person looked within himself or herself and discovered new
possibilities.
The very notion of a static status quo is a reassuring fiction. Life is
change. The question is, what sort of change? Death and decay are forms
of change. But so is renewal. The capacity to adapt and grow in new and
better directions is a miraculous aspect of being human. At the Seder we
read: Bchol dor vador chayav adam lirot et atzmo k’ilu hu yatza mimitzrayim.
This is usually rendered: “In every generation a person must view him/
herself as if they have personally gone out from Egypt.” In other words,
identification with the historical event, from one generation of people to
the next. But what if we read: “In every generation of one’s life, a person
must look within, for self-renewal is like liberating one’s self from slavery.”
This spirit can help a person overcome hardship, improve the world, and
find meaning and joy in each day of life.
Self-renewal is the trait of healthy communities and vital congregations.
I look with joy upon the many signs of renewal within our Emanuel
Synagogue. I have witnessed many examples of renewal: fresh approaches,
renewed energy, new faces, and a renewed sense of purpose; the spirit of
renewal is a key to our Emanuel Synagogue’s vitality.
This Pesach, enjoy the karpas and celebrate the life giving spirit of
renewal!
Debbie, Gabrielle, Sharone, and Ilan join me in wishing you a happy
and healthy Passover! Hag Pesach Kasher v’Samayach!
NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY
by Beth M. Polebaum
There are two new sections in the library.
The first, unveiled during the fall, is a shelf of books for
study of the weekly Torah portion. They consist of
some new books and others culled from other sections of
the library for anyone wishing to prepare a D’var Torah or
simply interested in Torah L’ishma, the study of Torah for
its own sake.
The other section consists of parenting books. These
are different from many of the parenting books you may
find in other libraries since they focus on raising Jewish
children and creating a Jewish environment rich with
tradition and values. There are books that help inspire
spirituality and provide insights into talking about G-d
with children. Others discuss the meaning of Bar and Bat
Mitzvah and others attempt to guide parents through those
tumultuous teenage years. One of my favorites, The Blessing
of a Skinned Knee, by Wendy Mogel, distills traditional Jewish
wisdom into insightful parenting guidelines.
You can find these books on a bookcase on your right
as you enter the library from the door closest to the Activity
Room. You may check out books even when I am not
there. Just sign the card in the book pocket, adding your
phone number and email address, and leave the card on my
desk near the computer. Please return adult books in two
weeks, children’s books in one week.
News alert for Maggie Anton fans!
Maggie Anton is the author of the series of books she
calls Rashi’s Daughters. She recently published the first
book of a new series called Rav Hisda’s Daughter, Book I: The
Apprentice. The book is historical fiction, based on the life
of Rav Hisda, who became head of the academy in Sura in
295 CE. Ms. Anton bases the book on Talmudic stories and
other research into the times, all told from a woman’s perspective.
The library has just acquired a copy of this book.
Enjoy!
Recent Brotherhood Programs
We had a fascinating presentation for the month of January.
Ken Simon introduced us to his friend and colleague
Patrick Culligan, Chief Public Defender for the capital
Defense and Trial Service unit for the State of Connecticut.
Mr. Culligan spoke about his career defending those
accused of a capital felony. He also discussed the recent
work of the Innocence Project involving cases of false confessions
and where DNA evidence would later exonerate
the defendants. Mr. Culligan spoke about the 1992 trial
when he represented Richard Lapointe. It is Mr. Culligan’s
belief that Richard Lapointe was wrongfully convicted.
Richard Lapointe is currently in prison awaiting a new trial
ordered by the State Appellate last October.
Brotherhood Catering Service
Some of our members are not aware that the Brotherhood,
under the direction of master cook Saul Shemkovitz, prepares
some of the finest food delights for Bar/Bat Mitzvah
Kiddush spreads and many other occasions in the synagogue.
Our kugel, egg salad and tuna salad are the most
scrumptious tasting in West Hartford. The bookings for
this year are going fast, so if you have an event coming up,
please send an email to Saul at sshemkov@gmail.com or
preparation is done in-house and proceeds benefit the shul.
Are you a Brotherhood member?
If you are, we welcome you back for another great year! If
not, please consider becoming one today. Have you become
a new member of the Emanuel within the last six months?
MAHZOR LEV SHALEM DEDICATION/ORDER FORM
This past Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur we all had the opportunity
to experience Mahzor Lev Shalem first hand. From the many comments
we have received it was warmly and enthusiastically received by our
Emanuel Family. Many have asked about dedicating a Mahzor or purchasing
one for home use. The dedication form is below.
The cost to dedicate a Mahzor is $72.
The easiest way to purchase a copy for home use is to visit The Emanuel
office and purchase a Mahzor. The cost is $50.
