Basking in the enjoyment of summer and breathing
in the fresh air wafting in the windows. Many have
commented this week about how they wish we could
bottle up this weather and have it all year round.
As much as I agree, I know that we, as Vermonters,
appreciate it more because we only have it for a short
period of time, and we certainly wouldn’t have the lush
greenness if we didn’t have cool weather sometimes.
I, for one, will make every effort to appreciate it while
it’s here. Life is good in the neighborhood!
A Celebration of a Life
Devoted to Liberty
Hardy Macia
Easily overcoming persistent rains, over a
hundred met in the Pavilion at Mill’s Riverside
Park in Jericho, Vermont on Sunday, June 16 in
honor of the memory of long-time libertarian
activist Hardy Macia who died on May 13, 2013.
Libertarians from Vermont and New Hampshire
spoke in gratitude for Macia’s life and work, in
sorrow for his too early demise, and in sympathy
for his family’s loss.
For many years, Hardy Macia was a member of
the Libertarian Party. He devoted considerable
time, ability, and energy to expound core
libertarian beliefs in greater freedom, less
government, fewer regulations, lower taxes. He
worked hard in support of the unalienable rights
of every person to life, liberty, and property.
Macia’s efforts were critical in building the
Vermont Libertarian Party in the 1990s and
2000s. He was a past Vermont delegate to the
Libertarian National Convention where he was
among those honored for helping make the
Vermont Libertarian Party the fastest growing
state affiliate, and the second largest state
libertarian party in the country in proportion to
state population. He also served as state chair
of the Vermont Libertarian Party, and became
regional representative on the Libertarian Party’s
national committee.
He served as a selectman in Grand Isle and
became chairman of the Grand Isle Selectboard.
He actively campaigned to become Governor
of Vermont in 2004, and later worked on the
presidential campaign to elect Libertarian Party
nominee Gary Johnson. Hardy recently moved
to New Hampshire to join the Free State Project.
The current chair of the Vermont Libertarian
Party, Jeremy Ryan, stated “I’ve witnessed him
campaign and work so passionately for the cause
of liberty for all. He showed much dedication and
optimism in everything he worked on. Everyone
seemed to like him, even those who didn’t agree
his beliefs. People knew he was the real deal,
they knew he was doing what he felt was right
and they respected that. He was a crucial part of
the party here in Vermont.”

Two Centuries of
Ministry
and Living into the
Third
In the early summer of 1813, the Anglican
Bishop of Quebec took a leap of faith. He named
Micajah Townsend, then a seminarian, to be the
very first minister for Caldwell Manor, the area
that now covers Alburgh Springs, Clarenceville,
and Noyan. The newly ordained minister
settled in Clarenceville in 1815, and by 1818 the
cornerstone for Saint George’s, Clarenceville was
laid. The Reverend Canon Townsend’s ministry
was wide and long and deep, and he made a
lasting contribution to the larger community.
The 200th anniversary of the bishop’s leap of
faith is being observed this coming Sunday, June
30, with a worship pilgrimage. The Borders
Regional Ministry is now comprised of Saint
Luke’s Episcopal Church in Alburgh; Saint
George’s Anglican Church, Clarenceville and
Saint Thomas’ Anglican Church, Noyan. The
pilgrimage to each of the churches is being led
by the Rt. Rev. Thomas C. Ely, Episcopal Bishop
of Vermont.
The pilgrimage starts with a 9 am service of
Morning Prayer at Saint George’s; then a 10 am
service of the Great Litany at Saint Thomas’ and
ending with a 11 am service of Eucharist at Saint
Luke’s. All services are open to the public. A
buffet lunch for the worship pilgrims will follow
at the Links on the Lake in Alburgh. For more
information or to make a lunch reservation,
contact the Borders Regional Ministry pastor at
802-863-8036 or tlchadwick@comcast.net.

Donors Needed for
Local Blood Drive
There is a critical need for all types of blood!
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be at
Folsom School in South Hero on Tuesday, July
2 from 12:30 to 6 pm. All eligible donors are
encouraged to come out and help. Although blood
has been collected for many years, the shelf life
of a pint of blood is only 42 days, thus the reason
the supply must be continually replenished. This
is particularly important during the summer
months when donations often decline.
There are some residents here in Grand Isle
County that have a critical need for blood and
blood products, so, let’s help our neighbors by
going out to donate. New donors are especially
welcome.
In order to be eligible to donate blood through
the Red Cross, donors must be over 17 years of
age, in good health, must not have donated in the
past 56 days and must pass the medical history
criteria. In Vermont, 16-year-olds are allowed to
donate with parental permission; there are other
height and weight requirements also. The entire
donation takes about an hour with the actual
donation time lasting ten minutes. Remember to
bring some personal identification: blood donor
card, pho id or two forms of id, and relax and
enjoy refreshments afterward, including ice
cream donated by Island Homemade Ice Cream.
Giving blood is completely safe and makes you
feel good! Organizers are hoping to exceed their
goal of fifty pints on Tuesday, July 2—please
do your part to help! For more information, call
HAROLD “HUTCH” R. HUTCHINS
Harold Ray Hutchins, 88, of Milton, formerly of
Medford, Canton, and Hyannis Port, Massachusetts,
died on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at Fletcher Allen
Hospital in Burlington.
Hutch was born on March 17, 1925, in Malden,
Massachusetts, to the late Earl and Alice Hutchins.
Following graduation from Medford High School
in 1943, he joined the United States Navy, serving
as Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class, Navigator
and Flight Engineer for the Air/Sea Rescue/Patrol
Bombing Squadron in the Pacific. At the end of
WWII, Hutch was part of the air-sea patrols guarding
the 1945 United Nations Conference with Churchill,
Roosevelt, Stalin and Chiang Kaichek attending. He
received an honorable discharge on April 3, 1946, and
remained in the US Navy Reserve until 1952.
After attending the Northeast Aircraft School,
Hutch worked for 39 years as an Aircraft Service
Manager/Auto-Pilot Specialist at Wiggins Airways
and at Logan and Norwood. He left Wiggins in 1983
and worked for Griffin Avionics at Hyannis until he
retired in 1987. He continued to tell stories and draw
lessons from his working life until the day he passed
away.
Hutch will be greatly missed by his wife of 64 years,
Barbara; his two brothers, Stanley and wife, Shirley,
of Port Saint Lucie, Florida, and Ray and wife, Jane,
of Sarasota, Florida; and his four children, Judy Keller
and husband, Jim, of Gig Harbor, Washington and
LaQuinta, California, Janet Yates and husband, Peter,
of South Hero, Rob Hutchins and wife, Ginger, of
Washington, DC and Gwen Hutchins of South Hero.
He also leaves twelve grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren
that he was so proud of. Hutch was
predeceased by his eldest daughter, Nancy Sevene, in
2007.
Above all, his life was devoted to his large extended
family that included special nieces and nephews and
“adopted” family friends. Hutch was like the “pied
piper of Camp Everest”, leading everyone to the
beach or filling the station wagon with children and
heading to the village for ice cream; teaching kids to
water-ski, drive and play cribbage; or sitting in his
special chair with the newest baby held contented and
sleeping in the crook of his arm. A favorite memory
of the little ones was sharing cherries with “Gramps”
and then spitting the pits over the camp hill.
He spoiled his beloved Schnauzers and enjoyed
working and playing outdoors in all weather. He took
great pleasure from his vegetable garden, hunting, his
old Boston Whaler, and driving the shuttle tractors for
South Hero’s AppleFest for 18 years. He also liked a
good round of golf, and was very proud of his first
hole-in-one in 1986. Hutch and Barbara enjoyed
traveling but especially to Maine and the Maritimes.
Hutch was a Vermonter at heart. He loved Lake
Champlain his entire life and instilled the same
enthusiasm in his family. He died with few, if any,
regrets and every person who knew and loved
him is a better person because of it. As one of his
grandchildren, Tynan Hutchins, wrote: “We may not
build our own houses on the tops of hills in rural
Vermont, but my grandfather’s independent spirit has
been passed down to all of us. I’d like to think that his
inclination to trust and his sense of right and wrong
did as well.”
An informal gathering to celebrate and remember
Hutch’s life was held at the family cottage in Milton
on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Donations in lieu of
flowers can be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation,
and always cherished.
Fini is survived by her loving husband of 43
at the Historic Fisk Farm
The annual Pro-Series Concerts, presented by the Isle La Motte Preservation
Trust on beautiful Fisk Farm on Isle La Motte, have been described as a “mini-
Tanglewood experience”. For eleven years, Music Director, Michael Waters,
has engaged top notch performers for these summer concerts, dazzling
audiences in the old Horse and Carriage Barn at Fisk Farm. The wooden barn
The two-concert series begins this year on Saturday, July 13, at 7:30 pm
artist Andre Sebastien Savoie will accompany Ms. Cullins on the piano.
The second concert of the series on Saturday, August 24, at 7:30 pm, will
Local Man Becomes Pastor
Many of you know David Light from North Hero. He and his wife, Yelena, moved here from NYC 15 years ago. David has been very active in the
community serving on the Parks and Rec Commission of North Hero, on the board of many different Methodist Church committees, as a justice of the
peace-- he did oversee the marriage of a few of you, he ran for State Representative, but he’s probably best known for his ten years as the artistic director
of The Village Players, and has served as lay speaker and leader in The Champlain Islands Parish for the last few years.
An ardent Christian for over thirty years, those of you who were blessed by hearing him lead
a service or just give a message will agree that his messages were strong and memorable. A few
years back David recognized God’s call. Questioning his age but aware of all God’s blessings
in his life, David answered that call without hesitation by entering a course of study for the
pastorate. On Saturday, June 15, at the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church
at Gordon College, David was certified as a local pastor.
As of July 1, he will serve as pastor of both the Middlesex and Moretown United Methodist
Churches. The first question that comes to mind is will the family relocate and what will become
of their True Light Farm. When asked, David responded with “It’s an hour and fifteen minutes
away. Being from NYC and LA I’m used to commuting that long to work and this commute is just
beautiful. Between living here and working there God is doubly blessing me with the best of both
worlds. And I just love North Hero to the point that I really feel at this time the only way I‘d leave
is to be chained and pulled out of the town. I don‘t think I‘ve done anything to deserve that, yet.”
When told that a local person was heard commenting that David seems unafraid to do anything
David simply said that his favorite scripture remains, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me”. He then added “Still, I can always use a couple of prayers.” Prayers
for a successful ministry go with you, David.

June is passing real fast, but summer always speeds
right by. Today is the longest day of the year, and
it sort of feels like it.
It is the first day of summer, and it sure seems
like it-- it’s over 80 degrees today. Sure glad I
have my AC in. Temperature is supposed to
go up to 90 on Monday. First, we get a hot dry
spell, and then it rains-- can’t keep up with the
weather.
SCHOOL CROSSING SIGN MISSING
Please help us locate the large yellow foldup
“School Crossing” sign that was sitting at
the crosswalk on School Street, these signs are
placed here for the safety of our children. If
you know anything about the whereabouts,
please call the Grand Isle Sheriff’s Department,
or simply, please return the sign to the Isle La
Motte School. We just want the sign returned;
otherwise, we need to find $300, as these funds
are not available in our school budget. Thankyou,
and have a safe and healthy summer!
The last weekend of camping: nothing like
sitting by the camp fire, with coffee in hand,
laptop on the lap and fighting the poor WiFi
connections. The kids are now older, so, the
parents can stay up late and sleep off the night
before. I reflect on when I was their age and
camping in the same spot with my grandparents,
in their 18-foot Holiday Rambler with the itchy
lime green couch. The same giant chipmunk sits
out front, although it does seem a bit smaller
than way back then. Fishing, ball playing, bike
Student Receives
Civilian Marksmanship
Program Youth
Scholarship
Sydney D. Crady, of Grand Isle, has received the
2013-2014 CMP Youth Scholarship, presented by
the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). She
participated in the Burlington Rifle & Pistol Club
and will receive a one-year, $1,000 scholarship from
CMP based on marksmanship participation, grade
point average and merit, to be used towards a pursuit
of higher education.
The scholarship selection meeting was held on
March 28, 2013. Eligible applicants were graduating
seniors who participated in marksmanship programs
and JROTC Service Championships, who also
excelled academically. The CMP awarded over
$150,000 in Youth Scholarships.
The discipline and practice of target rifle shooting
is extremely effective in teaching life skills that
enhance student performances in schoolwork as well
as in home, family, social and job-related activities.
Life skills that are effectively developed through
marksmanship experiences include: Self-control,
self-discipline and emotional control; responsibility
(from being responsible for the safe handling of
firearms); concentration and attentive skills; goalsetting
and understanding how to achieve goals;
fair play, teamwork and leadership; rewards of hard
work, practice and competition; and self-image
enhancement.
The Civilian Marksmanship Program is a national
organization dedicated to the respect for and safe
handling of firearms and instilling patriotism and
discipline in our youth participants. The CMP
provides its constituents with the highest level of
instruction in the proper control of firearms by highlyskilled
coaches and veteran range safety officers in
the classroom, at our ranges and wherever the CMP
banner is displayed.
Notes from VFW Post
10854
Our local VFW post puts out flags every Memorial
Day on the veterans’ graves in South hero, Grand Isle
and North Hero. It is a duty to make sure that each
veteran’s grave has a flag holder and a flag to honor
their service to our country.
We have noticed, as we have replaced the flags this
year, that several of the brass markers are missing.
In one case, the marker had been removed and the
flag was balled up and stuffed into the dirt next to the
gravestone.
Metal: brass, copper, etc., has become a valuable
commodity to those looking for easy money. We
would hope that the residents of our three towns
would be very vigilant and let the sheriff know if they
see a veteran’s flag holder being removed from our
cemeteries.
Also, we are asking for your financial assistance:
the American flags that line the Fourth of July parade
route on South Street are in need of replacement and
many of the holders on the poles must be replaced
as well. If you can contribute any amount toward
the flags or their mountings, we will make sure they
are set in place for our parade. Please make checks
payable to Grand Isle VFW Post 10854 and mail them
c/o Michael Guernsey, 273 West Shore Road, South
Hero, Vermont 05486.
The Islander, June 25, 2013 Page 14
To the Editor:
Where does one
begin to tell the
story of a yet
another piece
of real history
to possibly
leave the Town
(and Village)
of Alburgh.
The Islands in
the Sun Senior
Center was
built in 1905 as a school house, but
due to additions/renovations, the
building is not considered historical
yet holds fond memories for many local
residents. The fate of this building is
currently under much controversy as to
its possible pending doom. We believe
the townspeople of Alburgh need to
understand the real potential of saving
this wonderful old building as a Senior/
Community Center for all to use for
generations to come.
We would like to know why the Town
Select Board decided to not renew the
lease of the building to the Senior Center,
saying that it was unsafe, prior to any
actual inspections of the building. Isn’t
it interesting that they had the building
inspected after they did not renew the
lease? The Senior Center was then told
they would have to vacate the building
by 31 May 2013 and that the building
would then be slated for demolition.
Since around January of this year, as
this information began to become public
knowledge, others became interested
and asked the Select Board if we could
obtain additional reports as to the actual
condition of the building. This would
determine whether or not it would be
feasible to try to save it. The reports
acquired (from further inspections by
a state of Vermont certified structural
engineer and a state of Vermont certified
master electrician) and submitted to
the Select Board of the Town of Alburgh
proved that the repairs needed to reopen
the building for public use would be
minimal. The Fire Marshall concurred,
stating that as long as the major points
were repaired, we could use the building
and do the remainder of the repairs over
time. The state of Vermont certified
professionals estimated the cost of a
mere four to six thousand to complete the
initial repairs needed. The Fire Marshall
would then re-inspect the building.
The Board of Directors of the Islands in
the Sun Senior Center has advised the
Alburgh Board of Selectman that we
currently have in excess of ten thousand
dollars in our bank account of which we
are willing to allocate up to ten thousand
towards the required repairs to re-open
the doors as a Senior/Community Center
for all ages. We could then hold additional
fundraisers so we could continue to
achieve the more cosmetic repairs.
We find it rather curious that the word
“condemned” was not used in any of the
inspector’s reports. The Islands in the
Sun Senior Center Building has never
been condemned, it merely was advised
that some essential repairs needed to be
done. We ask why, in the face of official
reports that clearly state the building
can be saved and a room full of people
eager to renovate the building at no cost
to the taxpayers of Alburgh, some of the
Select Board members continue to be
adamantly calling for its destruction?
All we are asking is for the truth and the
opportunity to preserve the building for
future generations.
The Alburgh Select Board has indicated
they will respond with their decisions
on this matter during their regular
meeting, 7 pm on Tuesday, June 25 at the
Municipal Building. Public input would
be appreciated. Let your voice be heard
concerning this important resource of
our community.
Respectfully,
JoAnn M. Percy, Treasurer
Donna Holcomb Larose, Secretary of
the Islands in the Sun Senior Center
Board of Directors
Vermont Proposed Rule: 13P020
AGENCY: Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board
CONCISE SUMMARY: This proposed rule revises the Wildlife Management
manages select game species by geographical WMUs. WMUs are
delineated based on habitat conditions, as well as climate, species
densities, size, and availability of identifiable roads as boundaries.
While consistency in the boundaries of WMUs is critical to between
-year evaluations of species harvests, population estimates, adaptive
management, as well as to the hunting public, periodic updates
are warranted.
THE PEACE GARDEN PROJECT
The Peace Garden in the MES courtyard is a
collaborative effort between the students in the
big buddy/ little buddy mentoring program and
the MASK program. The project led the student
gardeners from to planting seeds in March and
placing the seedling in the raised beds earlier
this month. At the end of the school year the
buddies celebrated by making and sharing
pizzas in honor of their pizza/ salsa garden.
Each week the buddies demonstrated the PBIS
skills of respect, responsibility and cooperation
while having fun. The projects displayed in the
garden include hand-painted bird houses and
feeling face clay planters. Each buddy created
friendship bracelets and nature journals to
record observations of the natural world. Several
classes participated in the garden by planting
the seeds for the sunflower/morning glory house
and the scarlet runner bean teepee. The classes
created original poems to display on the hand
painted signs.
The school is grateful to Lowe’s and Whole
Foods for the generous grants to make the project
possible. Thank you to the Mask program and
the LEAP summer program for nurturing the
garden this summer. The produce will be used
in the delicious lunches served over the summer
and into the fall. Please enjoy our wonderful
garden when you stop by.
Neighborhood Meal at Camp Abnaki
By: Susan Davis
For the past 111 years, the YMCA Camp Abnaki, located in North Hero, has hosted a “Neighbors Dinner” just
before the camp opens for the season.
“We value our relationship with our neighbors and are honored to host this event each year,” said Camp
Director Jon Kuypers.
Last Thursday, residents along Abnaki Road and beyond met in the camp’s Turrell Dining Hall to enjoy a
scrumptious dinner prepared by the camp’s Food Services
Director, Cecile Albright, who is about to welcome new
campers for the 24th year in a row.
“Cecile is amazing,” said Jeremy Plane, Assistant Camp
Director. “Not only does she provide nutritious and
wholesome meals for the campers, they’re also really
good-- complete with her famous homemade bread and
rolls and her amazing desserts.”
As the Abnaki staff mingled with the diners, they talked
about the various programs that the camp has to offer.
One that was not as familiar as others was the seasonlong
day camp, which is open to boys ages 6-10.
“We have some Island boys attending but most come
from other towns,” said Plane. “We provide a bus that
picks them up at various locations, including Folsom
School in South Hero,” he added. The idea of a day camp is
to provide great experiences for the young boys allowing
them to try new things and make new friends. There are
a couple of spots left in the July 1 to 5 Day Camp. For
more information, contact the camp at 372-9622.
