50 Years of Panopa – 50 Years
of Competence . . . and Fun
A 1,200 square metre twin-pole VIP tent directly on the Rhine in Duisburg Ruhrort, 600 hand-picked
guests, a radio entertainer who has become cult, refined catering and hefty courses, fireworks, samba
rhythms, bossa nova and jazz were all ingredients of a very particular party. Panopa celebrated its 50th
anniversary on 26 and 27 August together with its customers, suppliers and of course staff.
What constitutes Panopa? The
question was an intrinsic
part of most of the items on
the programme of the anniversary
celebrations. A Panopa song written by
Panopa staff for the occasion, speeches
and a talk show with customers,
suppliers and Panopa employees
hosted by WDR star reporter Manfred
“Manni” Breuckmann created some

insights. It is fun to work with the
Duisburg company and people are
proud to be with the logistics service
provider. Logistic expertise, quality
management, reliable planning and
scheduling operations, controlled
material flow and secure and dependable
processes are all assets that
count. Panopa is more, though. Apart
from competence and flexibility, it is
above all the sympathy that Panopa
beams and radiates and bears witness
to Panopa’s belief in its success.
Panopa’s Chief Executive Officer
Heinz-Gerd Sprenger reviewed the
different phases of Panopa’s history in
his address. He recalled the establishment
of the company in 1955 as the
dispatch agent of the Krupp Group in
Essen and the development until the
crisis in the early 1990s caused by the
deregulation of the
European transport
market. The crisis
created new strengths,
though. Panopa entered
the automobile
sector, the mechanical
engineering market
and the engineering
contracting industry
and specialised in contract logistics
and the development and application
of new logistics strategies.

explained with a twinkle in his eyes:
“It is a truly remarkable feature of
Panopa that they not only budget
breathtaking growth rates but shock
their parent by performing to budget.”
Heinz-Gerd Sprenger was equally optimistic
when he talked to his guests
about the prospects of Panopa: “At 50
you are still young enough to do something
stupid but old enough to choose
the right stupidities.” He concluded
that Panopa will remain the door
opener to customer success.
Panopa Fleet Management –
Uncomplicated Service from a Single Source
Panopa’s fleet management is an
efficient service not only appreciated
outside the Imperial
Logistics International Group. Group
companies also hire the specialists from
the Duisburg headquarters. In early
October 2005, Pohl & Co. received for
example six new automobiles under a
full-service package.
These all-in-one arrangements are perfect
both for internal and for external
customers. Panopa’s fleet management
deals with all vehicle purchase or leasing
questions, handles all fuel and
service card matters and looks after
invoicing. Scheduling, loss adjustment
after an accident and car rental are
other elements from the comprehensive
service package.
“We cater for individual vehicles or
complete fleets. Our service reduces
administrative work loads in the
organisation of our customer, creating
more time for what really matters and
that is the customer’s core business,”
explained Helmut Schniederjohann
who heads Panopa’s Fleet Management
Department.

Expansion of the Automobile
Logistics Division
Imperial Logistics International GmbH acquired the contract logistics operations
of the Gillhuber Group, Neufahrn, Germany, effective as of 1 June 2005.
Gillhuber Logistik GmbH – the name under which the new company operates –
is specialised in logistics services for the automobile industry and its suppliers.
Carmakers in Southern Germany are the most important customers.
Panopa will oversee the operating business of Gillhuber Logistik GmbH.
Gillhuber is headquartered in Neufahrn to the North of Munich. Other locations
include Munich, Garching, Regensburg, Wackersdorf and Coventry (UK).
Services range from warehouse management and assembly to CKD / SKD
packaging, forwarding and JIT or JIS truck transports. Annual turnover totals
approx. 30 million Euros.
The acquisition mainly strengthens the contract logistics business of Panopa
Logistik GmbH and improves Panopa’s position in the automobile logistics
market.
Georg Gillhuber and Heinz-Gerd Sprenger were appointed managing directors.
Sprenger will at the same time remain responsible for the business of
Panopa Logistik GmbH.
