PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
This week students continued to work well and overwhelmingly follow school rules. We have enjoyed a break in the rain and many
students have got out into the garden planting in earnest and really making our community garden come alive.
It is such a pleasure for me to walk around the school when our students are in class and see the quality work that is being produced
on a daily basis. Our school is proud of our students and the outcomes they achieve. Teachers who come to our school to work in a
casual capacity remark regularly what a pleasure it is to come to our school and be part of the energy and enthusiasm in the
classrooms. Students are engaged in learning and teachers should be proud of their achievements leading learning in New Lambton.
This week is parliament week again at New Lambton South and I am looking forward to hearing the debates. Many motions have
been held over since the last sitting and with our parliament being new it will take us a while to clear the backlog of suggestions.
Again this program and the 007 Leadership program have taken our school to new heights in student leadership and you as parents
should be very proud of your children and our school.
May I remind parents of girls that Lowes at Kotara Westfield has the girl’s winter uniform and many parents have started to either
order or purchase these for 2012. I look forward to seeing our students in this new uniform from Day 1 Term 2 2012.
Thank you to parents who have supported the school by purchasing their school uniforms (everything but dresses for girls) from our
school uniform shop. Sales of uniform bring some income to the P&C and also ensure our students look great when attending
school.
The school’s Annual School Report and School Plan 2012‐2014 will be uploaded onto the school’s website this week if you are
interested in having a look. The Annual School Report is a snapshot of our 2011 year with data from NAPLAN and other
achievements recorded (with photos too). The 3 Year Plan was developed after rigorous self evaluation and planning taking into
account the priorities of the Department of Education and Communities, State and Federal education agendas and our own school
community needs.
I would like to encourage everyone in our school community to get involved in Harmony Day 2012; to embrace and engage the
Community members to come along on this day to share a part of their culture with a small group of students at a time. Ideas are
endless, some suggestions could be sharing music/ traditional costume/ artefacts, or showing photos of your birth country and
talking to children about the similarities and differences.
Please contact your child’s class teacher or leave your details at the office for Mrs Freeman if you can offer your time. For more
information or ideas of how to discuss this special day with your child, visit: www.harmony.gov.au
KINDERGARTEN NEWS
The sun shone brightly on Friday morning just in time for Kindergarten to participate in Sport. The children enjoyed using a variety
of sports equipment. Thankyou to all our Stage 3 leaders who have been showing great leadership qualities during our sport time.
This week we will be listening to the beginning sounds in words. We are enjoying reading big books and excited about seeing our
next Bug Club books. In maths we are practising counting to 20 and trying very hard to neatly write the numbers 1 to 10. Keep
asking for sponsors for the Lap‐a‐thon on 23 rd March. Any parents that wish to share some information about their country of origin
please speak to you child’s class teacher.
K/1O NEWS
What a great week of learning we’ve had in K/1O. This week kindergarten have been practising their writing. They wrote sentences
about the fun things we do at school. Year 1 have been solving problems using multiplication. Putting things into groups and sharing
objects equally amongst groups. Everyone in K/1O are improving their reading skills. Lots of people have had a go at Bug Club and
are reading every night at home. Reading is a skill for life and just as we practise sporting skills we must practise reading every day.
So read, read, read as much as you can.
1W NEWS
Mrs Wallace and Mrs Cooper are away today.
1/2M NEWS
This week in 1/2M we have been working in our school garden and have all been going home with green thumbs!!! We have planted
cucumbers, carrots, strawberries, cabbage, lettuce and heaps more in our fruit and vegetable patch. We even put together a worm
farm that has 1200 worms in it!! We have enjoyed planting, watering and looking after our produce and can’t wait for it to grow so
that we can pick it.
Page | 5

1S NEWS
This week 1S have been learning about Length. We measured our tables using units we found around the classroom. Also, we
planted some vegetables in our patch and built our worm farm. We loved getting our hands dirty! Don’t forget that Sport is now on
Thursdays as well as Library.
2D NEWS
2D have been working hard at learning how to solve multiplication and division problems. In literacy we have started learning how
to write an exposition. Today we wrote an exposition titled ‘Should Children Wear Hats to School’. We have also been busy planting
our vegetables in the garden. This week’s news topic is ‘Bring in something special and discuss’.
3/4C NEWS
Well done 3/4C, you have had another fantastic week! In maths, we have been studying number patterns and we have all been
working really well in number groups. In HSIE, we have finished looking at a lot of Australian National Parks and we are now starting
to design posters to show the importance of following the rules when in a national park. In writing, we have written some great
expositions convincing us the importance of saving water. Keep up the great work 3/4C
3/4D NEWS
We have been busy writing with a partner to improve our understanding of how to convince an audience about our ideas. Also our
class talks are interesting to listen to and most students are presenting their arguments quite well. We are learning about analogue
time and are having fun playing Stop the Clock on the smartboard. In HSIE we have been studying endangered and extinct Australian
species and most students were surprised that the koala was an endangered species. We are beginning to understand the
importance of the role of national parks.
3/4H NEWS
Another great week for everyone in 3/4H. For the next 2 Thursdays, we will be using some exciting equipment from Educational
Experience which will be lots of fun. If you want to come in and have a look, we will be in the hall from 1.30‐3.30pm. We will share
some photos in next week’s newsflash.
3/4M NEWS
Last week, Hamish, Harrison, Braith, Elias and Ryley brainstormed and recorded reasons why we should use containers instead of
plastic wrap for our lunches. Here are some of their arguments:
• Using plastic wrap creates more rubbish in our world
• It takes a long time for plastic wrap to disintegrate
• Sea animals may think plastic is food and eat it and become sick or die.
• Plastic may get caught around animals and they may not be able to move or it could choke them.
This week the boys will use these arguments to persuade us to use containers instead of plastic wrap. In the meantime, check out
plastic wrap alternatives in our Environment News and keep the working bee date free if you can!
5/6B NEWS
We have been using our green thumbs and preparing our garden beds for planting. Last Friday we weeded the beds (which had
been left to their own devices for some time) and discovered a “fruit” that looked like a hand grenade with spikes. There are a
number of herbs that have survived and are flowering and the cherry tomato vines have suffered from the exposure to sunlight. We
will attempt to rejuvenate our garden beds and look forward to the coming months.
5/6D NEWS
Mrs Dennis has chosen the eight people to go to debate training ‐ Jess, Molly, Danika, Bianka, Jun Young, Harry, Matthew and
Ronack, the debate training is being held next Tuesday at Jewells Public School. The term has gone so quick for us OC kids and we
are feeling the pressure of presenting our CYOS. (CREATE YOUR OWN SOCIETY) and our term assignment (CEREMONY OF TWELVE).
We are starting to use our laptops more and we are feeling more comfortable with using them. Each week we do BTN (BEHIND THE
NEWS) this is where we watch a video and answer questions about the video, after that we do a “mini‐project” to go with it.
By Jessica Finegan‐Jones
5/6G NEWS
This term 5/6G have been completing a series of engineering challenges. Throughout the term they have worked in cooperative
groups to design a variety of structures to meet specifications and solve a problem.
From some total disasters at the beginning of term, the whole class managed to design a vehicle from plastic cups, tape and
cardboard which successfully carried a ping pong ball down a zip line in less than ten seconds.
As well as learning about the designing and making process the students in 5/6 G have learned to work cooperatively in different
groups to achieve a common purpose.
Next week they will complete a Techno Challenge of five different projects.
5/6T NEWS
This week our class has continued to learn about the Great Barrier Reef. We have also looked at the Fringing Reef and the Atoll Reef.
Our back wall is off to a great start and is looking fantastic. Here are some of the facts we have learnt; all marine turtles are
threatened species. The Great Barrier Reef is a series of 2500 or more coral reefs stretching for 2000km along the Queensland
Coast.
