PEFNC President
Applauds General
Assembly
Commitment to Supporting the Opportunity
Scholarship Program Injunction of Opportunity
Scholarship Program Appealed to State’s
Highest Court
RALEIGH – Below is a statement from Darrell
Allison, president of Parents for Educational
Freedom in North Carolina (PEFNC),
regarding the General Assembly’s intention
to ask the state Supreme Court to
stay the trial court ruling that temporarily
suspended the Opportunity Scholarship
Program.
“We have strong hopes for the appeal to
our state’s highest court that was filed
by the Institute for Justice on behalf of
parents from across the state. We also
applaud the leadership of the North
Carolina General Assembly for their intention
to ask the Supreme Court to lift the
injunction on behalf of the more than
4,500 low-income parents who applied
for their child to receive an Opportunity
Scholarship. We simply do not believe
that an injunction or stoppage of this critically
important program is warranted.
The demand for the immediate relief of
low-income parents from across the state
could not have been demonstrated more
strongly with the more than doubling
subscription for the program in less than
25 days. These families desire immediate
educational relief especially when
considering that many of their children
are assigned to schools that produce less
than 30 percent proficiency results. No
one should be forced to live with these
kinds of adverse statistics. By keeping this
injunction in place, the court would be
effectively forcing low-income students to
stay in the same low-performing schools
for this upcoming school year.”
This week Parents for Educational Freedom
in North Carolina launched a statewide
video and social media campaign,
called ‘One of 4,500,’ that spotlights stories
of parents who qualified and applied for
the Opportunity Scholarship Program. To
learn more about the parents who applied
for the program, visit www.ONEof4500.
com.
The Opportunity Scholarship Program,
passed in July 2013, created scholarships
of up to $4,200 for children from
low-income and working-class families
to attend a private school of the parent’s
choice. To qualify, a child must have been
enrolled in a North Carolina public school
and reside in a household that qualifies for
federal Free and Reduced Lunch (about
$44,000 for a family of 4).
About Paneh Mime International
In 2001, The Paneh Mime Troop of Durham
established a troop consisted of specifically
chosen individuals, dedicated to
serving God’s people. The Troop is made
up of adults, teens and children five years
old up to thirteen years of age. Humbled
by the rapid growth of The “D4H Mega
Mime Conference” Paneh Mime International
designed and started ICan! Mime a
Paneh Mime’s Youth Outreach program.
ICan, transforms the youth through educational
and fine art programs, which provide
hands-on workshops, tutoring and
technique classes in the preforming arts.
seminars and workshops that includes individual
counseling sessions, workshops,
and free seminars. If you don’t have a
business plan, for example, or don’t know
how to prepare one, this is part of the
service we provide. Now, we don’t do it
for you… but will show you how to get it
done”, he said.
If you are not clear about how, when or
what kind of business you would like to
start, then the Center is readily available
to assist with its free, one-one-one confidential
counseling sessions. This free service
is available for both new and existing
business owners.
In addition to an adult literacy program,
the Center has a unique adult high school
program, all designed to improve basic
educational skills, employment prospects
and career advancement. This is a tuitionfree,
distance learning program, which allows
students to take courses online.
It’s really a sort of time-freedom concept,
meaning enrollees set their own schedule
and move at their own pace. Upon successful
completion of the course outline,
an Adult High School diploma is issued
by Forsyth Tech. Another good reason to
give a shout-out to the institution is that
such educational courses are all free.
There are only two requirements to participate
in the Adult High School program,(1)
students must be at least 16 years of age
and (2) must attend four days of orientation
prior to entering the program.
Over three years ago, President Obama
made a historic visit to the sprawling campus
and brought cheers and applause
when he remarked, “I came to Forsyth Tech
because you have shown what the future
can look like”.
Allan Younger wants that future to continue
to shine brightly for individuals who,
like himself, have a burning desire to start
and build their own business. Seemingly,
always on the go and embracing the language
of an entrepreneur, Younger has a
short list of do’s and don’ts:
(1) “Don’t just jump into anything, (2) Don’t
give up to early and (3) Don’t get discouraged.
But do (1) plan, plan and plan some
more, (2) Do use your resources and (3) Do
allow us to help you”. he advises.
This summer, one of the highlights of the
small business center will be a class expertly
designed to catch the attention of
anyone remotely interested in entrepreneurship
and business ownership--- “Everything
You Ever Wanted to Know about
Starting a Business.”
And waiting at the starting line to cheer
you on will be Allan Younger and the SBC
staff, excited and thrilled to help you get
started;SBC@forsythtech.edu or (336) 757-
