Dear Local Training Program Coordinator,<br />

<strong>Special</strong> Olympics New Jersey is proud to announce that the <strong>2013</strong> <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong> will once again<br />

be conducted at The College of New Jersey on June 7 - 9, <strong>2013</strong>.<br />

This handbook contains information and forms necessary for Sectional/League Competitions<br />

conducted for all <strong>Summer</strong> Sports with the exception of Track & Field.<br />

• Track & Field entry form D's will be distributed to you by your Area Director before the Area<br />

Meet. Please return them to your Area Director.<br />

• Slots for <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong> Track & Field will be given to you after your Area Track and Field<br />

Meet. Area Directors will distribute information to you at that time.<br />

Please complete the enclosed materials in order to register your athletes for Sectional competition.<br />

Retain a copy of each for your records.<br />

• INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE ENTRY FORMS - Every athlete attending the <strong>Games</strong> must have<br />

an entry form submitted: Form D's or Unified Partner Forms. All parts must be complete.<br />

A valid medical must be stapled to each entry form.<br />

Softball Teams must complete a League Roster Form (will be provided separately).<br />

Track & Field entry forms will be distributed via your Area Track & Field Meet.<br />

• Athletes may only compete in ONE SPORT at the Sectional or League level.<br />

• Athletes must compete in Sectional/League competition in order to advance to Chapter<br />

competition.<br />

• <strong>Registration</strong> deadlines for the sports your athletes will be participating in will be enforced.<br />

Please make note of these dates.<br />

At the Sectional competition you will be asked to activate those athletes who competed and/or qualified<br />

to move on to <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong>. An Activation Form will be provided at each competition.<br />

Once you activate your athletes to move on to <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong>, you will be sent housing forms and<br />

other paperwork, which must be sent to your Head Delegate.<br />

B. An athlete may compete in only one sport at the Sectional Level<br />

FROM THE DELAWARE MEMORIAL BRIDGE<br />

Take Interstate 295 north. Take Exit 21 onto Delaware Street and continue through Woodbury<br />

for about 1.7 miles. As Delaware Street becomes Cooper Street, continue for .5 miles. Turn right<br />

at traffic light onto Evergreen Avenue. Travel one block and turn left at next light onto E. Barber<br />

Ave. Proceed about 3.2 miles. The entrance for GCIT is on the left at the bottom of the hill.<br />

FROM THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE<br />

Take the N.J. Turnpike south to Exit 3. After toll, follow signs for Route 168 south. Continue for<br />

about one mile to traffic light and turn right on Route 544 & Route 41 south, Clements Bridge<br />

Road. Continue for about 1.7 miles to Deptford Center Rd. and make a right. Travel about<br />

0.8 miles and merge onto Rt. 55 South. Travel about 2.4 miles and exit at 56B<br />

Woodbury/Westville.<br />

After you exit, make a left at the 1st light, Bankbridge Rd. Make a left at the next light, Tayard<br />

Rd. The entrance for GCIT is on the left at the bottom of the hill.<br />

FROM ATLANTIC CITY<br />

<br />

Take the Atlantic City Expressway North. Take exit 44 towards Rt-168/Sicklerville/Blackwood.<br />

Stay to the right for Rt-168/Blackwood. Sicklerville Rd will turn into Woodbury-Turners<br />

ville Rd as you cross Rt-168. Travel for about 1.5 miles. Make a left onto Barnsboro-Blackwood<br />

Rd. and bear to the right. Continue for about 1.2 miles. At the stop sign, make a right onto Egg<br />

Harbor Rd. Go straight through the light as you are now on Rt-47/Delsea Dr. for about 1.2 miles.<br />

Make a left onto Bankbridge Rd. Make a left at the next light, Tanyard Rd. The entrance for<br />

GCIT is on the left at the bottom of the hill.<br />

FROM THE COMMODORE BARRY BRIDGE<br />

Take Route 322 east to light at Route 45. Turn left onto Route 45 north and travel for about 2.0<br />

miles. Turn right onto Heritage Rd and go about 2.1 miles. Turn right onto Main St. Make<br />

a slight left onto Center St and go for about 1.7 miles. Now make a left onto Tanyard Rd. GCIT<br />

is about 1.3 miles ahead on the right, past Gloucester County College.<br />

REGISTRATION: In order to complete the individual athlete entry forms (Form D) and the<br />

team entry forms, all participants must complete a bocce skills test.<br />

PARTICIPATION: Athletes will participate in doubles competition at <strong>Sectionals</strong>. To qualify for<br />

Sectional competition, an athlete must participate in an eight-week training program.<br />

Bocce In an effort Unified to provide Doubles: more competitive opportunities for Bocce athletes at the <strong>2013</strong> <strong>Summer</strong><br />

<strong>Games</strong>, athletes will have the opportunity to participate in up to two events at <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong>.<br />

Included in this offering will be Unified Bocce Doubles. This event pairs one <strong>Special</strong> Olympics<br />

Athlete and one Unified Partner together on the same team. For all Sectional competition Bocce<br />

athletes will still only participate as Traditional Doubles teams.<br />

Athletes have the option to participate in one of the following at <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong>:<br />

• Traditional Doubles only • Unified Doubles only • Unified 4 team only<br />

• Traditional Doubles and Unified Doubles • Traditional Doubles and Unified 4 team<br />

• Unified Doubles and Unified 4 team<br />

GENERAL GUIDELINES: Athletes must be properly uniformed (shorts, sport shirt, white socks<br />

and sneakers). No jeans or casual shirts will be allowed.<br />

Traveling North via the Garden State Parkway - Take Exit 153B onto Route 3, which joins US46. Proceed West<br />

on US46 to Riverview Dr. Take Riverview Dr. to Minnisink Rd. Look for the Training School sign. Continue on<br />

this road until you see the sign for “North Jersey Developmental Center”.<br />

Traveling West on US46 from New York City - Turn right off of US46 at the Training School sign. This is Riverview<br />

Dr. Continue to bear right and you will see the School sign. This is Minnisink Road. Continue on this road until<br />

you see the sign for “North Jersey Training School”.<br />

Traveling East on US46 toward New York City - Take US46 East and follow the signs for I-80 east. This will be<br />

just after the Willowbrook Mall. Take the first exit once on I-80 and at the end of the exit, make a left. Just after<br />

the State Troopers complex NJDC will be on your left.<br />

Traveling East on I-80 toward New York City - Look for sign for Minnisink Road, Totowa and use this exit. Turn<br />

left over overpass and you will see the Training School on the left.<br />

CENTRAL & SOUTH SECTIONALS:<br />

COMING FROM US 1 (North or South): Take US 1 to I-295/95. Take I-95 South towards Philadelphia/<br />

Pennsylvania (do NOT take I-295 South). Follow I-95 South ½ mile to Exit 8A for Princeton Pike South. (1) Take<br />

Princeton Pike South back over I-95, move immediately into left lane. Take first left onto Princess Rd. (just before<br />

Fleet Bank). <strong>Special</strong> Olympics New Jersey is the 2 nd Building on Right.<br />

COMING FROM THE NORTH OR SOUTH VIA NJ TURNPIKE: (2) Follow Turnpike to Exit 7A for I-195 – stay to<br />

left out of tollbooths. Take I-195 West towards Trenton for several miles. Take Exit 60B for I-295 North towards<br />

Princeton. Follow I-295 North several miles. Road designation changes to I-95 South at Exit 67/Route 1 (you’re<br />

still on the same highway). Take Exit 8A (2 nd exit after Route 1) for Princeton Pike South. Follow (1) above.<br />

FROM THE NORTH VIA THE GARDEN STATE PARKWAY: Parkway South to Exit 129 (Turnpike/I-95/<br />

US9/440/I-287), after the tollbooths be sure to go. South on the Turnpike. Follow (2) above (directions from the<br />

Turnpike).<br />

COMING FROM NORTH VIA US 206: Take US 206 South through Princeton (road makes 90 degree right turn<br />

in Princeton). Continue several miles on US 206 South through Lawrenceville. Just past Lawrenceville School<br />

make a Left at the traffic light (Mobil Station) onto Franklin. Corner Road/Route 546. Continue to next traffic light<br />

and (3) go Left onto Princeton Pike North. Travel short distance then make Right Princess Road (immediately past<br />

Fleet Bank). Turn right onto Princess Road. <strong>Special</strong> Olympics New Jersey is the 2 nd Building on Right.<br />

COMING FROM WEST (FROM PA OR ROUTE 29) VIA I-95 NORTH: . Take I-95 North Towards Princeton. Take<br />

Exit 8A (sign says “Route 546 to Princeton Pike South”). Merge onto Route 546 East and travel to first light which<br />

is Princeton Pike. Follow (3) above.<br />

Bocce Skills<br />

Test<br />

Each athlete should play three modified games, called a set. The athlete should<br />

alternate from each end of the court and play the following allotted balls. The<br />

athlete should not surpass the foul line when he/she plays the allotted balls:<br />

a. The coach should place the pallina at the 30-foot line, and the players<br />

should play eight balls. The coach will measure the closest three balls and<br />

record their distance in centimeters.<br />

b. The coach will then place the pallina at the 40-foot line, and the players<br />

should play eight balls. The coach will measure the closest three balls and<br />

record their distance in centimeters.<br />

c. The coach will then place the pallina at the 50-foot line, and the player<br />

should play eight balls. The coach will measure the closest three balls and<br />

record their distance in centimeters.<br />

Measurements will be taken from the center side of the bocce ball to the center<br />

side of the pallina, for a total of nine measurements, the sum of which becomes<br />

the athlete's divisioning score.<br />

Individual Score = the Sum of a, b, c totals above (9 measurements).<br />

Doubles Score = the Sum of the 2 individual scores.<br />

Team Score = the Sum of the 4 individual scores.<br />

PARTICIPATION: Coaches will determine in what level of competition to place their athletes. The athletes<br />

must be able to safely perform all of the skills in that level. In All Around competition, athletes must compete<br />

at the same level in all events. Optional routines may be performed only by Level IV gymnasts in all<br />

events after they perform their compulsory routines.<br />

GENERAL GUIDELINES: Athletes must compete in the Sectional competition that their Area is assigned<br />

to. Coaches may use additional criteria (i.e., behavior, overnight stay, medical) to evaluate the athlete for<br />

higher level competition. Athletes must provide their own gymnastics attire: men - shorts, T-shirt or tank<br />

top or men's tank step-in, white socks (gymnastics stretch pants optional); women - leotard, have bare legs,<br />

and have bare feet (beam shoes optional). Cassette tape, CD for floor exercise routine.<br />

Lunch will not be served at Sectional competition.<br />

Take I-80 or I-78 to I-287 South to US202 South to the Flemington Circle (you will be driving<br />

on US202 South approx. 20 minutes). At the Flemington Circle follow the signs for Route<br />

31 North (the first exit off the circle). Travel North on Route 31 for about 2-3 miles, past the<br />

Hospital. Just after the 6 th traffic light from the circle (Sandhill Road and a gas station on the<br />

right) you will see Health Quest of Hunterdon on the right.<br />

From the South:<br />

Take I-295 North which turns into I-95 (South towards PA) to the Route 31 North exit. Continue<br />

on Route 31 North for at least 10 miles, follow signs for US202/Route31 North towards<br />

Flemington/Clinton to the Flemington Circle. At the Flemington Circle you will stay on Route<br />

31 North. Continue to the 6th traffic light after the circle (North on Route 31 for about 2-3<br />

miles, past the Hospital). Just after the 6 th traffic light from the circle (Sandhill Road and a<br />

gas station on the right) you will see Health Quest of Hunterdon on the right.<br />

Take US1 South of Princeton to Route 533/Quakerbridge Road. (The second exit, goes under the<br />

Proceed on Hughes Drive 1/2 mile to entrance of Mercer County Park on left.<br />

Via NJ Turnpike<br />

Take the NJ Turnpike South to Exit 8 (Hightstown). Follow Route 33 West and turn right onto Route<br />

571. Travel on Route 571 for 2 1/2 miles to Route 535. Turn left onto Route 535 and travel 4 miles<br />

Via I-295 (North or South)<br />

participate in doubles competition at <strong>Summer</strong> <strong>Games</strong>. To qualify for Sectional level competition, an athlete<br />

must participate in an eight week training program.<br />

Note: Individual Skills will only take place at the Sectional level. Competition will only occur if there are<br />

15 athletes registered for the event. It is necessary to have 15 athletes to establish fair and equal<br />

divisions.<br />
