The President’s Message
D
ear Members
and fellows,
By the time this
newsletter reaches
your hands, most of you must be
preparing for IGC – 2009 scheduled
in December at Guntur. Prof. M.
Rama Rao and his team are working
very hard to make the prestigious
annual activity a grand success.
Though, the region was affected by
devastating floods, however, it could
not make any dent in the enthusiasm
of the organizers. I request all the
fellow colleagues to be generous in
sponsoring the event and participate
in the Annual Conference in a large
number.
Seventeenth international conference
on Soil Mechanics & Geotechnical
Engg. was held during Oct. 5-9, 2009
in Alexandria, Egypt. About 1300
delegates representing 33 countries
attended the conference. Indian
delegation had about 16 members.
Indian delegates Prof. M.R. Madhav
Er. Bidasaria, Dr. K. Rajagopal,
Dr. V.M. Sharma and either
Co-chaired or acted as panelists in
various technical sessions of the
conference. The conference will be
remembered for its excellent
arrangements and was a huge
success.
Preparations are in full swing for
hosting of IGC-2009 by IGS-Guntur
Chapter. All the functionaries
especially, RVR & JC College
Management and Principal, Chairman
of the Conference, Prof. K.S. Sairam,
Prof. M. Rama Rao, Organising
Secretary are giving their very best
to make this Conference a memorable
one. All arrangements are being
precision made and delegates could
expect warm hospitality, excellent stay
and culinary arrangements and overall
rich technical presentations.
As you all know, 6 th ICEG being
organized by IGS at New Delhi from
8 – 12 Nov. 2010 is going to be another
landmark activity, under the
Chairmanship of Prof. Manoj Datta,
who made yet another wonderful
presentation at Alexandria during the
17 th ICSMGE and had fruitful
interactions with international
community to popularize the event and
to make the same a grand success,
thereby, mobilizing the profession. On
the sidelines of 6 th ICEG, some other
important activities are expected in the
form of workshops, training program,
important meets etc for which all the
fellow members will be regularly up
dated. It would be our endevour to join
in the efforts of Prof. Manoj Datta
and his team and collectively make the
Conference, 6 th ICEG, a memorable
activity.
IGS – GI collaboration was signed in
Oct 2008, last year and subsequently
regular interactions are going on to
jointly organize activities on the topics
of common interest. A tentative action
plan has been decided and soon, it is
expected to be converted into a reality.
IGS Chapters have been organizing a
number of activities on different
subjects / topics and have been
celebrating Terzaghi Day by
conducting competitions among young
Geotechnical Professionals. I do
remember IGS, Chennai Chapter and
Indore Chapter conducting these
activities regularly. Other Chapters
are also probably organizing similar
activities based on the regional
problems. However, most of these
activities remain unreported. I take
this opportunity to request the
Chapters to send their calander of
activities and also the report on the
activities organized by the chapter to
the IGS head quarter so that they are
appropriately covered in Newsletter
and the AGM Booklet.
I wish all members have enjoyed the
festival season. By the time the next
issue of Newsletter comes in, it would
by Jan 2010. I, therefore, take the
opportunity to wish all members a very
Happy 2010!
Er. Mahavir Bidasaria
IGC-2011
Our new Chapter IGS-Kochi would be
hosting IGC-2011. Please await for details
re: Venue, Date etc. in our next issue of
IGS NEWS.

to attend the conference in large contingent. Indian
delegates e.g Prof. M.R. Madhav Er. Bidasaria, Dr. K.
Rajagopal, Dr. V.M. Sharma etc. either Co-chaired or
acted as panelists in various technical sessions. The
conference organisers had organized technical visits to
Aswan, the southernmost city located on shores of the
Egypt enjoys a strategic location in north Africa close to
the middle East. The country has long played an
important role in connecting Africa with Asia and the
Mediterranean with the Indian ocean and as such has
been at the center of the world's political and economical
arena for centuries. It is a vast country spread well over
million square kilometers, that is four times the size of
United Kingdom and twice the size of France. It’s cities
like Cairo, Aswan and Luxor hug the shores of Nile
valley. Alexandria is in the Nile delta. The Nile valley
stretches from the delta to Egypt's southernmost border
with Sudan and along with its great cities is home to
some of the world's most iconic symbols of ancient
civilization. Here visitors can see the three Great
Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx (it is believed that Sphinx
guards them). The Sahara desert makes up much of
Egypt's distinct desert and oasis areas which are
fascinating if sparsely inhabited.
Egypt is a religious country. The Egyptians like to work
hard and live life to the full and tend to work in the heart
of the cities. Visitors can enjoy lively cultural experiences
too-everything from the latest art sensations to music
theatre and dance. It is a warm country for most of the
year. Some days in summer the temperature can reach
25-35 deg. c in Cairo, the capital of Egypt.
The history of Egypt stretches back to unimaginable
times. It is a country probably best known to the world
for its pharaohs, such as Tutankhamun and its ancient
civilization that largely existed along the bank of Nile
river.
IGS Mumbai Chapter
An One-day Seminar on Ground
Penetrating Radar Infrared Thermal
Imager & Pile Integrity Testing was
jointly organized by IGS Mumbai
Chapter and Earth Products India
Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi on Saturday,
July 04, 2009 at IIT Bombay. The
Seminar was Sponsored by IGS Main
and EPI.
There were interesting and
informative lectures by Mr. Timothy
Wong, Director, EPI, on the following
three topics:
1. Geotechnical Applications of
GPR
2. Uses and Applications of Infrared
Thermal IMGER
3. Low Strain Testing of Piles using
Pile Integrity Tester (PIT)
The Seminar was attended by over
60 participants. The lectures covered
many case studies and were well
illustrated with Power Point slides.
The utility and advantages of using
GPR for a variety of sub-surface
mapping requirements ranging from
detecting rebars in concrete to water
table location and sub-surface profiling
were discussed, the highlight being
detection of underground utilities such
as pipe lines, cables and conduits.
The importance of thermal imaging as
a non-invasive technique for building
inspection in general and water
leakage and air infiltration in particular,
were explained through case studies.
One interesting off-shoot was
identification of passengers having
fever at an airport as part of swine
flu detection campaign.
NEW OFFICE BEARERS
IGS Guwahati Chapter (NE)
Chairman : Prof. (Dr.) U.C. Kalita
Vice-Chairman : Prof. (Dr.) (Mrs.) Binu Sharma
Hon. Secretary : Dr. Diganta Goswami
The lecture on Pile integrity testing,
known as low-strai or pulse echo
testing generated a lot of interest and
discussions since Pile foundations are
quite common in Mumbai.
The Seminar was made particularly
attractive through a hands-on
practical demonstration session
involving data collection and analysis
using GPR and Thermal imager and
many participants participated in it
enthusiastically.
The overwhelming response was a
testimony to the grand success of the
Seminar and it was, therefore,
decided to organize similar programs
in the future.
