welcome to eppendorf
The company
In 1945/46, Dr. Heinrich Netheler and Dr. Hans Hinz founded the
“Elektromedizinische Werkstätten GmbH” medical technology company.
The objective was the concrete improvement of the living conditions of
human society through progressive and high-quality products.
Thus in August 1945 the foundations were laid on the grounds of the
Hamburg University Hospital in Eppendorf for the company that is today
a global leader in the biotechnology branch under the name Eppendorf AG.
The connection of technology and an ethical orientation to the good of
humanity was then as now a central aspect of the company philosophy.
Eppendorf has successfully expanded on this basis and has opened up a
variety of new and promising areas. The company group currently develops,
produces and sells individual devices and complete system solutions in the
areas of sample preparation, centrifugation, lab consumables, cell technology
and PCR/DNA technology.
In the meantime Eppendorf employs more than 1,800 people, 1,000 of which
in Germany. The universally acknowledged specialist competency and the
consistently high level of quality of the products have led to the company
establishing an outstanding position in the international market. The products
accompany and support users in the solution of lab tasks in all areas of the
biosciences, from research through medicine to industrial routine applications.
Advancements, such as the decoding of the human genome, will also
open up completely new application areas in the future and thus expand
Eppendorf’s possible fields of activity. The company can consider with pride
that around the world only very few labs are able and will be able to dispense
with Eppendorf and its products.
Perspectives and possibilities
for continued training
Eppendorf knows that its success is especially due to its hard-working and
capable employees. Thus employee development plays a very central role in
not only maintaining this commitment, but also in expanding upon it in the
future. This is because motivated and qualified employees are primarily the
essential capital of a modern company with ambitions of long-term success
in global competition.
Our employees are therefore challenged and supported according to their
ability and ambition. In the process, the requirements of the company are
taken as much into account as the expectations of the employees.
We have thus developed a program of continued training for our employees,
composed of a number of different qualification and training measures. The
palette of these possibilities for further training, which is principally available
to all employees, is quite varied and includes both individual and collective
measures, depending upon the requirements. These extend from, among
others, leadership training to the improvement of personal work methods,
from business management seminars and communication training to acquiring
new language skills. In addition to this, Eppendorf also makes it possible
to participate in mentoring and coaching programs.
Management development also plays an important role at Eppendorf.
This is because good and acknowledged managers represent another basic
key to the success of the company. The point and purpose of management
development is to identify employees with potential for management duties
in both domestic and foreign settings, to prepare them in a targeted fashion
for both current and future tasks and to advise them individually with respect
to their further vocational training and education. This building block creates
perspective for willing and suitable employees and secures a continuous,
optimal team for leadership positions within our company, true to our
principle of “promoting from within”.
Career training
Career training has always been a central factor in the success of the
company. Eppendorf encourages the up-and-coming generation from its
own ranks with a qualified initial training program. The course of training
takes place within the proven and forward-looking careers framework and
has a long tradition.
With our training concept we support a balance of training in both career
and social competency.
With targeted training marketing we attract the interest of and win suitable
applicants for our training careers. By carrying out periods of practical
training we help provide important career experience for pupils and students.
Students also have the possibility of carrying out their dissertations.
Our training spectrum basically encompasses both commercial and trade
careers.
Career training:
● Commercial: Industrial commercial clerk
Wholesale and export clerk
Specialized computer science:
system integration or application management
● Trades: Industrial mechanics
Technical drafting
Social security and other benefits*
(Excerpt)
Provisions for old age
The above average company-supported provision for old age for our
employees supplements the state pension and will therefore also be an
extremely important and attractive social security benefit at Eppendorf in
the future.
Employment benefits to encourage capital formation
Eppendorf currently pays permanently employed salaried personnel and
apprentices a monthly contribution for investment in legally recognized
savings and investment plans.
The amount contributed by Eppendorf is dependent upon the relevant full
time or part time position and the number of hours worked each week by
the employee.
Flexible work hours and telework
Eppendorf accommodates the requirements of its employees with a system
of flexible work hours and telework, meaning increased options for personal
schedule planning.
Career, family and private interests can thus be more easily coordinated.
Conditions such as: no core time, a window from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., a flextime
account and specially agreed upon trust-based working arrangements
take the interests of our employees into consideration and thus contribute
significantly to employee satisfaction and to the positive work environment.
Telework at Eppendorf means in this case that those whose constant presence
at the company workplace is not required for the carrying-out of their
duties can do part of their job at home.
*Different locations have different conditions
Holidays and special leave
Holidays are also really important at Eppendorf. This is because we recognize
that only well-balanced employees with recharged batteries can do
good work. This is why every employee has a basic 30 days of holidays.
In addition to this, there are a number of situations that can result in the
need for special leave, such as one's own wedding, the birth of a child,
moving, etc. These holidays are provided at no cost by the company.
Cafeteria
There is a cafeteria available at each of the larger Eppendorf locations.
Sandwiches and other snacks are also available from the vending machines.
Payment for lunch is carried out with a chip card, which can be “charged”
with money prior to purchase.
Lunch is significantly subsidized by Eppendorf. Apprentices, trainees and
diploma students receive a further subsidized lunch.
The menu for the coming week is posted or made available at several locations
around the premises each Monday. Three different meal choices each
day and a regular favorite are available at Eppendorf AG, Eppendorf
Instrumente GmbH and Eppendorf Liquid Handling GmbH. Also included
in the service is a salad bar, at which one can build a customized meal from
a variety of choices.
Work related suggestions for improvement
We strive for constant improvement within the framework of our company
philosophy. The creativity and the inventiveness of our employees should be
encouraged and exploited as a contribution to the improvement of productivity,
quality and work satisfaction. The encouragement of work related suggestions
for improvement makes it possible for employees to suggest
improvements on their own initiative and to share in the business success
resulting from the improvements introduced. In order to become even more
competitive, we are pleased to be able to make use of the suggestions and
ideas of our employees.
If the realization of the idea proves to be advantageous to Eppendorf, this is
naturally honored with a fair bonus.
welcome to eppendorf
Company sport groups
Eppendorf and its company sport groups are particularly proud to be able
to offer a wide range of sport options.
The sports offered extend from fitness, football, jogging, soccer, jazz gymnastics
and bowling to dancing, table tennis and volleyball. There is also
the possibility of using a swimming pool in Hamburg.
Company parking
If you drive to work, Eppendorf will provide you with free parking.
“life”-the international employee magazine
The international employee magazine, “eppendorf-life” is directed
to employees around the world. Its purpose is to communicate information
extending beyond the immediate workplace and to reflect
the company in its entirety. Eppendorf is today a globally active company,
whose employees, from Hamburg to Sydney and from New York to Kuala
Lumpur in subsidiary and partner organizations and other forms of
cooperation, work together. The goal of this international publication
is to promote the bringing together of various cultures under one roof.
“eppendorf-life” appears several times a year and is issued to every
employee of the company. The company hopes that this employee
magazine will awaken the interest of the employees, and that all
employees will feel like a part of a larger community, wherever
they are active for Eppendorf.
Health protection
Eppendorf undertakes preventive health measures for its employees.
Ergonomic design of the workplace, adapted to the requirements and
natural movements of people, is an expression of this basic principle of
prevention.
The setting up of flexible workplaces (sitting and standing), especially in
production and in office areas, supports efforts to prevent and avoid false
