A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD AND PRESIDENT & CEO
2010 was Us TOO’s 20th Anniversary year. It was our second year as a leadership team – Fred’s second as
Chairman of the Board and Tom’s sixth year as President & CEO. We remained committed to implementing
our second year of our Strategic Plan which was approved at the end of 2008 and provided a direction for us
through 2011.
When we look back on the events of 2010, we are struck with the number of significant events that made up
the year. First, we recognize the passing of Stu Porter in May of 2010 who was with us at our December
2009 Annual meeting and fighting to battle his metastatic prostate cancer. He was so close to many of us
and his death recommitted us to the seriousness of our fight.
Fred Mills
Chairman
of the Board
Us TOO International
So many things happened in 2010 that will make the difference for the millions of men like Stu. First, there
were several new developments in the search for new treatment options such as FDA approval of Provenge ®
and Jevtana ® but the fight did not stop with approval. In 2010 we had to continue the fight during the year to
support, inform and speak up.
Because 2010 was an anniversary year, much planning had gone into the August “From Passion to Action:
Us TOO at 20: Summit, Symposium and Celebration” event during 2009
to implement a significant and valuable event. That planning paid off as
approximately 250 people attended the event.
Tom Kirk
President
and CEO
Us TOO International
As we committed in the Strategic Plan, we continued to build the Board and
were very pleased to add new members Jim Rieder, Dexter Rumsey and
Jack Shaff to the Board in 2010 and we had to say farewell to retiring Board
members Greg Bielawski and Carl Frankel. Thank you again Greg and Carl.
During our December Annual Meeting we were pleased to be able to hold
our third meeting of the Us TOO Prostate Cancer Business Leadership
Council, recognize both Greg and Carl, present another round of Edward
Kaps “Hope Awards”, as well as hear Rabbi Ed Weinsberg present the Bill
Blair Memorial Lecture : “Not Tonight
Dear – Sex After Prostate Cancer.”
Thanks to all for your ongoing support
and hopefully the following Annual
Report will show our highlights for
a truly significant year in our
organizational history.
Rabbi Ed Weinsberg
Sincerely,
Greg Bielawski
WHAT DID WE TRY TO ACCOMPLISH IN 2010?
The Us TOO Corporate Plan developed and approved by the Board of Directors in 2008 with its
focus through 2011 best reflects what we are trying to accomplish. It addresses nine areas:
1 Board Development
The vision is for Us TOO to have an informed, proactive and balanced Board made up of
men and women directly affected by prostate cancer who have competencies in business,
fundraising and public relations. The Board Members should be willing to speak publicly
about prostate cancer and Us TOO and its mission.
2 Mission Statement
Our 2008-2011 plan called for us to examine our Mission Statement. The Board
approved the recommended modification of the Mission Statement in July 2009 to read:
20th Year
Celebration!
Be the leading prostate cancer organization helping men and their
families make informed decisions about prostate cancer early detection
and treatment through support, education and advocacy.
The Mission Statement made it clear we are trying to help men and their families make
informed decisions through support, education and advocacy. Us TOO’s SEA Blue
approach is evident in the updated Mission Statement.
3 Chapters/Support Groups
Communication with the hundreds of group leaders and volunteers is a high priority.
The role of the home office is to be a facilitator and provide standards and resources
for the independent local groups. Working with more groups is a goal.
4 Awareness and Marketing
The overall desired vision is to have Us TOO recognized as the organization to turn to
who supports people at risk for prostate cancer and the men and their families dealing
with prostate cancer and to be an active player to beat this disease.
5 Education
Us TOO views education as a form of empowerment of patients, their families and
volunteers. The immediate focus during 2009 and 2010 was on the 20th Anniversary event
while enriching and expanding the educational services of the organization such as its
newsletters, social communities, the Helpline and educational webinars and teleconferences.
6 Minority and Underserved Populations
With the completion of the five year Minority and Underserved Outreach Pilot Program with
CDC in the fall of 2008, Us TOO will plan for next steps and continue to utilize contacts
and materials developed during the project. Us TOO is committed to the Circles of Love
program to support women affected by prostate cancer.
7 Advocacy
Continue to work in collaboration with other groups to move forward to priorities
developed in the advocacy plan.
8 Fundraising and Resource Development
Develop and implement a broad range of options for donors to support Us TOO’s mission.
9 Collaboration
Develop further the collaborations with other groups nationally and internationally to
leverage Us TOO’s resources.
AUGUST 20 - 21, 2010 • CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
Designed for over a year, the August 2010 event featured a pre-symposium advocacy summit, a major symposium,
exhibitors, awards and a celebration to recognize our 20 years of peer support, education and advocacy.
It featured prominent leaders, prestigious faculty and valued staff and volunteers from partnering organizations.
It was supported by more than two dozen corporate sponsors and drew approximately 250 people from the U.S.
and several other countries as well. It was a major accomplishment for Us TOO and resulted in
video resources placed on the Us TOO website.
Ltd., Certified Public Accountants. The majority of Us TOO chapters are small community groups that do not solicit or raise finds. Information was received from
38 chapters reporting for the calendar year 2010 ending December 31, 2010. The groups in Houston,TX, Greenville,SC, East Amherst, NY and New York City, NY
reported revenues and expenses that appear in the 2010 audit under Chapter Revenue and Expense.
The unaudited reports submitted by the chapters summarize the revenue and expense activity of their group. The compilation report was compiled from the
34 groups reporting income and expenses and was combined into a report by the Us TOO staff for management reporting purposes and are listed above under
Us TOO Chapters. The accounting practices of the local Chapter groups are not necessarily the same practices followed by the Us TOO International office.
