MODEL COURSE 1.14 MEDICAL FIRST AID<br />
SCOPE: This model course aims to provide the training for candidates to<br />
provide medical first aid on board ship, in accordance with Section A-VI/4 of the STCW<br />
Code.<br />
OBJECTIVES: This syllabus covers the requirements of the 1995 STCW Convention<br />
Chapter VI, Section AVI/4, Table A-VI/4-1. On meeting the minimum standard of<br />
competence in medical first aid, a trainee will be competent to apply immediate first aid<br />
in the event of accident or illness on board.<br />
OUTLINE:<br />
Competence: Apply immediate first aid in the event of accident or illness on board.<br />

1. Immediate Action;<br />
2. First-aid Kit;<br />
3. Body Structure and Function;<br />
4. Toxicological Hazards aboard Ship;<br />
5. Examination of Patient;<br />
6. Spinal Injuries;<br />
7. Burns, Scalds and Effects of Heat and Cold;<br />
8. Fractures, Dislocations and Muscular Injuries;<br />
9. Medical Care of Rescued Persons, including Distress, Hypothermia and Cold<br />
Exposure;<br />
10. Radio Medical Advice;<br />
11. Pharmacology;<br />
12. Sterilization;<br />
13. Cardiac Arrest, Drowning and Asphyxia;<br />
14. Psychological/Psychiatric Problems.<br />
