Moreover, the <strong>Pro</strong>phets issued stark warn<strong>in</strong>gs about God’s punishments for mistreatment<br />

of the poor. Amos (5:11-12) made the l<strong>in</strong>k to God’s wrath to the treatment of the poor<br />

explicit:<br />

<strong>The</strong>refore because you trample on the poor <strong>and</strong> take from them levies of gra<strong>in</strong>,<br />

you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live <strong>in</strong> them; you have<br />

planted pleasant v<strong>in</strong>eyards, but you shall not dr<strong>in</strong>k their w<strong>in</strong>e.<br />

For I know how many are your transgressions, <strong>and</strong> how great are your s<strong>in</strong>s - you<br />

who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, <strong>and</strong> push aside the needy <strong>in</strong> the gate.<br />

Jeremiah castigates the Jewish people for their failure to protect orphans <strong>and</strong> plead the<br />

cause of the poor (Jeremiah 5:28). He denounces an entire generation for hav<strong>in</strong>g “<strong>in</strong> your<br />

skirts is found the blood of the souls of the <strong>in</strong>nocent poor” (2:34), <strong>and</strong> the whole nation<br />

for “us<strong>in</strong>g oppression, robb<strong>in</strong>g, defraud<strong>in</strong>g the poor <strong>and</strong> the needy, <strong>and</strong> extort<strong>in</strong>g from the<br />

stranger” (22:29) Isaiah (10:1-3) also declared that<br />

… that the destruction from afar would befall Judah because of its mistreatment<br />

of the poor: Woe to those who decree <strong>in</strong>iquitous deeds… to turn aside the needy<br />

from justice <strong>and</strong> to rob the poor of my people to their right…<br />

What will you do on the day of punishment, <strong>in</strong> the calamity that will come from<br />

far away?<br />

To avert God’s impend<strong>in</strong>g judgment, Isaiah implores his community to:<br />

Wash yourselves; make yourselves clean; remove the evil of your do<strong>in</strong>gs from<br />

before my eyes; cease to do evil, learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the<br />

oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow.<br />

Come now, let us argue it out, says the Lord: though your s<strong>in</strong>s are like scarlet,<br />

they shall be like snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like<br />

wool.<br />

If you are will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> obedient, you shall eat the good of the l<strong>and</strong>; but if you<br />

refuse <strong>and</strong> rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the Lord<br />

has spoken.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Pro</strong>phet Micah (2:2) similarly denounced Israelites who “covet fields, <strong>and</strong> seize<br />

them; houses, <strong>and</strong> take them away; they oppress householder <strong>and</strong> house, people <strong>and</strong> their<br />

<strong>in</strong>heritance.” He warned that Jerusalem would soon become “a heap of ru<strong>in</strong>s” – <strong>and</strong> for a<br />

time, his warn<strong>in</strong>gs were heard. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Pro</strong>phet Malachi (2:11) pleaded: “Have we not all one<br />

Father? Hath not one God created us? Why, then, do we deal treacherously with one<br />

another, profan<strong>in</strong>g the covenant of our ancestors?”<br />

Jeremiah, a hundred years after Isaiah, once more condemned the oppression of the poor<br />

<strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>difference of the wealthy to the needy <strong>and</strong> to orphans:<br />

Wicked men are found among my people; they lurk like fowlers ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> wait.<br />

<strong>The</strong>y set a trap; they catch men. Like a basket full of birds, their houses are full of
