2013 Theme______________<br />

The theme for the 32nd Annual Minnesota American Indian Institute on Alcohol <strong>and</strong><br />

Drug Studies (MAIIADS) is <strong>“The</strong> <strong>Many</strong> <strong>Faces</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Addiction</strong><strong>”</strong> <strong>and</strong> will focus on how<br />

addiction (alcohol, drug, sex, gambling, etc.) affects everyone including the addicted<br />

person, the family, <strong>and</strong> our communities.<br />

The MAIIADS conference <strong>of</strong>fers a holistic perspective on chemical dependency by<br />

providing a focus on youth, adults, elders, <strong>and</strong> community healing. State licensure in<br />

chemical dependency requires a focus on cultural knowledge <strong>and</strong> skill development.<br />

In keeping with this requirement, many <strong>of</strong> the Institute’s presenters are credentialed<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who are American Indian.<br />

The Institute is the coming together <strong>of</strong> chemical dependency pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who serve<br />

Anishinaabeg <strong>and</strong> Dakota people, <strong>and</strong> personnel from the Minnesota Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Human Services. The Anishinaabeg <strong>and</strong> the Dakota represent the eleven federally<br />

recognized tribes in Minnesota, as well as many urban non-pr<strong>of</strong>it programs serving<br />

American Indian families in Minnesota.<br />

Ethics—six hours will be provided to<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered Monday morning, <strong>and</strong> another<br />

three hours will be provided during the<br />
