Steven Halpern is an internationally acclaimed
composer, recording artist, author and sound healer. Through his
music, research and writings, he pioneered the modern re-awakening
of the healing powers of music.
The majority of his 60 recordings are part of his INNER
PEACE ® series, which is specifically composed for meditation,
relaxation, “sound health,” and spiritual growth. The free-flowing
ambience and luminous sound quality of this music combine the
ancient advice of the sages to “Be Still – and Know” with artistic
sensitivity and contemporary sound technology.
Steven’s recordings are featured prominently in John Bradshaw’s workshops and the
PBS-TV series, “Homecoming” and “Creating Love.” His music has been heard on CBS’s
“48 Hours,” ABC’s “20/20,” and “Oprah.”
Steven Halpern, Ph.D., is the author of “Sound Health” (Harper & Row) and Sound
Healing in the New Millennium. Dr. Halpern was a featured presenter at the Sixth
International Conference on Stress. He received the Music Healing Century Award
from the International New Thought Alliance (which includes Unity Churches,
Science of Mind Churches, and Divine Science Churches) in July 2000.
Like Lama Surya Das, Steven attended Valley Stream Central High School, class
of ’65, and the State University of New York at Buffalo (class of ’69). Although they
didn’t meet face-to-face, Surya Das enjoyed Steven’s dynamic performances leading the
jazz-rock “house band” that played at anti-war and educational reform demonstrations.
Little did either of them know that thirty years later they would reconnect at a spiritual
conference in Marin County, California, where the seeds of this album began to take
root.

Lama Surya Das has spent thirty years studying with
the great spiritual masters of Asia, including the Dalai Lama,
and is a leading spokesperson for the emergence of American
Buddhism and contemporary spirituality. He is a poet, translator,
and full-time spiritual teacher who leads lectures, workshops, and
meditation retreats worldwide. He is the author of three books,
including
the national bestseller, Awakening the Buddha Within (Broadway
Books, 1997), is active in interfaith dialogue, and has been
featured in numerous publications including New Age Journal, The Boston Globe,
The Los Angeles Times, and Tricycle. He lives in Concord, MA.
Born Jeffrey Miller, he was raised in Valley Stream on New York’s Long Island,
where he celebrated his bar mitzvah and earned letters in basketball, baseball, and
soccer at Valley Stream Central High School (class of 1968). While a student at the
State University of New York at Buffalo, he attended anti-war protests, marched on
Washington, and experienced Woodstock. After graduating with honors from college,
he traveled throughout Europe and the East, and has spent nearly thirty years studying
Zen, vipassana, yoga, and Tibetan Buddhism with the great old masters of Asia.
Today, Lama Surya Das teaches and lectures around the world, conducting dozens
of meditation retreats and workshops in ten different countries each year. Based on
his relationship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Surya Das founded the Western
Buddhist Teachers with the Dalai Lama in Dharmsala, India. He also teaches regularly
at Esalen, Open Center, Omega Institute, Interface, at universities in the United
States and abroad, and at spiritual centers of all kinds.
