Winston Churchill was born in a ladies' room
during a dance.
The term "the whole 9 yards" came from
WWII fighter pilots in the South Pacific.
When arming their airplanes on the ground,
the .50 caliber machine gun ammo belts
measured exactly 27 feet, before being loaded
into the fuselage. If the pilots fired all their
ammo at a target, it got "the whole 9 yards."
Mel Blanc (the voice of Bugs Bunny) was allergic
to carrots.
Looney Laws, Ordinances, and Rules
California
It is a misdemeanor to shoot at any kind of game from a
moving vehicle, unless the target is a whale.
In Pacific Grove, "molesting" butterflies can result in a
$500 fine.
It is illegal to set a mousetrap without a hunting license.
In Long Beach, it is illegal to curse on a mini-golf course.
It is illegal to cry on the witness stand in Los Angeles courts.
Colorado
In Logan County, it is illegal for a man to kiss a woman
while she is asleep.
In Pueblo, it is illegal to let a dandelion grow within city
limits.
Connecticut
In Hartford, it is illegal to educate a dog.
It is illegal to dispose of used razor blades.
In New Britain, the speed limit for fire trucks is 25 m.p.h.,
even when going to a fire.
Pool Safety
Install a fence at least four-feet high around all four sides of the pool. The fence should not have
openings or protrusions that a young child could use to get over, under, or through.
Make sure pool gates open out from the pool, and self-close and self-latch at a height children can't
reach.
Never leave children alone in or near the pool, even for a moment.
Keep rescue equipment (a shepherd's hook - a long pole with a hook on the end - and life preserver)
and a portable telephone near the pool. Choose a shepherd’s hook and other rescue equipment
made of fiberglass or other materials that do not conduct electricity.
Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as "floaties." They are not a substitute for approved life vests
and can give children a false sense of security.
Children may not be developmentally ready for swim lessons until after their fourth birthday. Swim
programs for children under 4 should not be seen as a way to decrease the risk of drowning.
Whenever infants or toddlers are in or around water, an adult should be within arm's length,
providing "touch supervision."
Weird Towns
Earth, Texas
The proposed name of this town was
supposed to be “Good Earth,” but a simple
U.S postal office mistake changed the
proposed name to simply “Earth.” You can
actually stand beside the city limit signs and
take a picture. You can tell friends and
relatives that you just came back from Earth.
Chicken, Alaska
This town was named after the state bird,
Ptarmigan, which closely resembles a
chicken. Since the name Ptarmigan was too
hard to spell, and the residents did not want
the town to be the subject of ridicule they
decided to simply call the town Chicken.
Hot Coffee, Mississippi
Travelers in the early 1800’s to Mobile or
Ellisville used to stop by at a local inn that
was owned by Levi Davis, who always had a
pot of hot coffee and ginger cakes.
North Pole, Alaska
The Dahl and Gaske Development Company
bought this land and named it North Pole,
hoping to attract a toy manufacturer who
would advertise products as being made in
the North Pole.
Okay, Oklahoma
This town was named after the O.K. Truck
Manufacturing Company, which was the
city's largest employer in 1919.
Notrees, Texas
Notrees was named by grocer Charlie Brown
who started his store in 1946. The town had
one native tree before the construction of a
Shell gas plant forced the removal of the tree.
Ninety-Six, South Carolina
This strange town name was given by early
traders in the 1700's, who mistakenly
believed that ninety-six was the number of
miles to the Cherokee village of Keowee
from this location.
