Village of Camillus
37 Main Street
Camillus, New York 13031
Attn:
Board of Trustees
Fellow Board Members:
As everyone is aware, I began employment with a new company a couple of
months ago. As I then advised, soon after starting my new position, although I intended
to maintain a business office in the Village, I suspected that the demands of my new
position, including extensive travel, might potentially restrict my ability to perform the
day-to-day activities required as Village Mayor.
This new position has proved to be very exciting and clearly a great opportunity
for advancing my career. However, the demands of this position, not the least of which is
the required travel, has confirmed in my mind that I will not be able to effectively
perform my duties as Mayor while at the same time performing as required for my new
position. In the last three months I have been to Houston two times, Dallas, New Orleans,
Germany and New Jersey on many occasions.
Based on this concern, at the outset I advised the Board and spoke with Kurt
Brunger about stepping up and taking over many of the Mayoral day-to-day duties. Both
Kurt and all of the Board members have clearly filled any void during this period and I
appreciate everyone’s help with this.
Having said that, I have now given considerable thought to my positions both as a
public official and new employee. In order to be fair to myself, my family and the
Village of Camillus, now that I do have an in-depth knowledge of what demands on my
time and energy will be required, I feel it appropriate to step down as Mayor. This will
allow the Board adequate time to fill the position as quickly as possible, and for the new
Mayor to entertain applicants for any vacant Board position.
In making the decision at this time I would note, and have considered, the
following:
1. That to resign within a short period of time prior to the next election
will allow the position to be filled by appointment and without the need
for a special election. Given that the Board’s work at this time is
especially sensitive and significant, especially with respect to our
rezoning efforts, the Fire Department, Camillus Cutlery and other
economic development initiatives, it makes abundant sense to, if
possible by my actions, make the transition process as smooth as
possible.
2. In addition, I have consciously attempted to fulfill my position for as
close to a two year term as reasonably possible, and given that the
Village Board will need some time to consider candidates for the
position of Mayor, and the new Mayor to consider candidates for
trustee. While the term of Mayor is a four year term, for many years
prior the Mayor was elected for a two year term and thus I have
attempted to, as best as possible, fulfill my duties for a period of time
consistent with the prior Mayoral terms.
3. I am especially proud of the following accomplishments of the Board of
Trustees under my term as Mayor which include the following: (List)
• Reduced fire budget by eliminating unnecessary or unjustifiable
expenses while still ensuring adequate protection with new and
improved equipment where required. (ie: New Jaws of Life)
• Have laid the ground work and initiated a new comprehensive
Main Street revitalization plan.
• Completed major sewer renovation project on North Street
• Completed intersection restructuring and paving on First Street
• Secured an additional $73K in grant funding to offset debt from
Milton Intersection project
• The last two Christmas Tree Lighting events have been the largest
most well-attended and successful.
• Last year’s Feb Fest was the largest and most well-attended, with
many new events and participants.
• There has been renewed focus on keeping the Village landscaped,
clean, cut and trim.
• Many cost-saving actions have been taken (ie: turning elections
over to the County, which we already pay for through county
taxes, vs. expending Village tax money)
• Have been more business proactive, working with our local
businesses to encourage façade renovations and other
improvements. The results will be seen over the next 12-18
months.
• Have worked consistently with SUNOCO to get the corner gas
station reopened, which will be a great convenience for our
community. They plan to re-open this Summer.
One of my intentions in resigning at this point in time and thus making
the political process easier for the new Mayor and Board, is to allow the
Board to continue to concentrate on some of our initiatives that still
need to be completed. I am confident that my successor in office as
well as all of you, as Trustees, will successfully achieve these
objectives.
In conclusion, I would like to thank the Village Board and so many Village
residents for their camaraderie, assistance and cooperation throughout my term to date,
and especially during the last few difficult and busy months.
I have sincerely enjoyed my time in public service as Mayor and am humbled by
the placement of this public trust in my hands by Village residents. I do expect to stay
actively involved in the future, however this time as a concerned, interested, member of
the public, but not as an elected official.
Please note the effective date of my resignation shall be February 18, 2009 and I
would be happy to assist in any way I can with a smooth transition.
Sincerely,
Tom Grant, Village Mayor
