Catawba County Library System’s Monthly Newsletter<br />
Historical Fiction Author Visit with Scott Syfert<br />
The Newton Branch will host Scott Syfert as he signs The First<br />
American Declaration of Independence? The Disputed History of<br />
the Mecklenburg Declaration of May 20, 1775 on Tuesday, May 12,<br />
2015, at 6:30 pm. Mr. Syfert will discuss the book and take Q&A<br />
from the audience before he signs copies of his book. The event is<br />
free and open to the public. Books will be available for purchase and<br />
autographing.<br />
Scott Syfert resides in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area and is also a<br />
corporate attorney. He is co-founder of The May 20th Society (www.<br />
may20thsociety.org), a nonprofit dedicated to commemorating<br />
the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. He is also a board<br />
member of the Trail of History. His vision and leadership helped create<br />
the Charlotte Liberty Walk, a tour in Center City Charlotte of historic<br />
sites from the American Revolution.<br />

The World of Carl Sandberg<br />
The Green Room Community Theatre is performing “The World of Carl Sandburg,” written and<br />
arranged by Norman Corwin, debuted in 1960 on Broadway and starred Betty Davis, David<br />
Merrill and Clarke Allen. All ages are invited to enjoy Sandburg’s poetry and jokes, excerpts<br />
from his prize-winning biography of Abraham Lincoln, and a selection of the folk songs he<br />
collected all over America in the “American Song Bag.” Sandburg is one of very few authors<br />
to win the Pulitzer Prize for both poetry and prose. Be sure to catch one of the following FREE<br />

have turned into a rallying cry to proclaim their love of the saga. May 4, is the worldwide day to say<br />
“May the Force be with you” to all, and celebrate the beloved Star Wars story that binds our galaxy<br />

Utilizing Local Herbs with Tamika Garrison and Jeanne Wade<br />

Saturday, May 9th at 11 am<br />
Tamika Garrison will discuss planting and propagating herbs in our area. Attendees will learn<br />
how to preserve their planted items properly and how to utilize culinary herbs in recipes as<br />
opposed to unhealthy alternative seasonings. Light snacks will be provided as an example<br />
plus several recipes. The workshop is free and registration is not required.<br />
Bike Safety Workshop<br />

Monday, May 18 at 4 pm<br />
Bring the family to a bike safety workshop in honor of American Bike Month.<br />
This class is for individuals over the age of four (4) that can ride a bike. It will<br />
cover bike safety including helmets, what to wear, when and where to ride,<br />
and hand signals. A bike rodeo will be set up in the parking lot. Children will<br />
need to bring a bike and a helmet which will be fitted to the child. They will<br />
be taught how to wear the helmet properly. Registration is not required.<br />
Murder Mystery Dinner: Passion and Pasta<br />

Mystery buffs and amateurs alike are invited to take part in this night of murder mystery<br />
