Summer Academy-wide Meeting: Suggestions from Small Groups
Friday, June 3, 2011
Using Educational Technology to Increase Teaching Efficiency
Facilitators: Coco Auerswald, Mike Peterson
1. Expand TOP to include simulation
2. Ensuring competency (especially procedural specialties)
3. Training / expertise in simulation (endorsing and organizing)
4. Integrate / educate about resources
5. Practical implementation workshops for simulation
6. Better centralized planning for technology
7. Central repository for educational technology (marketing / making others aware)
a. Best practices
b. Listservs
8. Academy meeting at the Simulation Center
9. Utilize technology to train in using technology
10. Evaluate how technology can impact efficiency ($)
11. Evaluate the value of varied technology in education
12. Understanding current and future learners
13. Identify common teaching goals (PE) and identify how technology may address them
14. Specific innovations grants (RFP) on educational technology
15. Improved peer communication on technology
Maximizing the value of Academy programs and activities – what should we stop doing or
do entirely differently, and why?
Facilitators: Harry Lampiris and Lee-may Chen
Summary of Academy Programs
• GME Teaching Workshop
• Membership
• TIP-TOP
• Partnership with OME – Educators’ Portfolios
• Educational Advocacy and Policy
• Training modules for TOP
• AME outreach slides
• AME teaching expertise
• Innovations Funding
• Communications/website
• Education Day
• Teaching Awards
• Fundraising - philanthropy
Audience should be AME members and Group 2 educators.
Current high profile AME activities: TOP, Innovations funding, Education Day
Other activities include TIP, educational advocacy, workshops in collaboration with OME

AME members should be ambassadors to our educational community at UCSF. The Faculty
Development working group is developing a common presentation that may help with this
outreach. Also, a resource list is being developed for the educational community to access and
obtain consults and connections with experts in specific content areas of teaching/learning.
Stop doing? How much would it hurt to support OME without co-sponsoring events? We would
still offer resources (our members) but potentially require less financial support?
Partnerships and Collaborations: Are there opportunities to leverage our investment in
programs such as TOP and Innovations Funding through thoughtful affiliations, without
blurring or weakening our identity?
Facilitators: Alma Martinez, Calvin Chou
Advertising
Goal of advertising is twofold: sends a message and identifies a need. Possible arenas:
Innovations Funding:
• Disseminate findings from grants
TIP/TOP
• Can be scary for subjects of TOP: needs to be owned by learners as opposed to the
program – have programs take ownership of TOP process
o peds residency program incorporated TOP: increased quality of residents’
o
presentations, slides
could use chief residents – occasional meetings of all chief residents together
can disseminate need / brainstorm uses for TOP for residents
• Maybe "tip" the scales in favor of TIP and having observation of role models teaching and
facilitating?
Help faculty understand the promotion process
• Provide specific feedback about faculty's CV, and provide coaching – perhaps a career
planning workshop, at which faculty can be paired with Academy member, with subsequent
follow-up to continue mentoring process (for example, Educator’s Portfolio w/s could be set
up to do this)
• This mentoring process could also be related to TOP
Disseminate innovations that occur in courses, residency programs
• Expand TOP observation to include methodology of programs and courses rather than
individuals: could develop into an “Educators’ Consultant Group”
• Addressing time challenges – watch in real time
Goal of advertising is to "grab the eyeballs" – potential media:
• Academy screensaver
• Advertise: on the shuttles, on Shamzi (Shieva’s dog)
• Departmental magazines and newsletters
• Academy/departmental point people to disseminate
• Synapse
• Social media: blogs, Twitter
