The Father of All Home Shows George Markoutsas, The ABL Group, and Susan Hirano, Coldwell Banker, Highland Park At last! You’re going to do your kitchen, your deck, your basement, that addition. Wouldn’t it be fun to include the whole family in the planning? After all, the whole family is going to live with the results! Make a day of it right here close to home, and enjoy a different kind of Father’s Day weekend. Come to the North Shore Taste & Lifestyle event, a vivid example of what makes our North Shore, well, tasteful! Get to know hundreds of local professionals who genuinely understand how North Shore people add style to their lives. You are cordially invited to a dream of a trade show: free admission, displays that reflect myriad components of living well and a location that’s as close as next door. A joint project of the Highland Park and Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chambers of Commerce, this casual, popular show—Saturday and Sunday, June 16 and 17, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—will be staged at the Deerpath School Campus, 155 W. Deerpath, in Lake Forest. The show has all the amenities that make this a fun way to do some serious brainstorming about your home (indoors and out), wellness, even financial management. Food for thought “What makes this show unique is that it is a private exhibit,” says Ginny Glasner, executive director of the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce, “designed to create a lifestyle experience for the consumer—specifically the North Shore consumer. Instead of being driven by the need to pack a convention center, this show has integrity. Every exhibitor is focused on the North Shore, in a setting that is designed for the comfort and convenience of the visitors. It’s a lovely opportunity to meet and talk with specialists who understand the suburban way of life.” Because the Taste & Lifestyle show is so close, getting there isn’t any kind of issue. There’s plenty of free parking on site, or you are welcome to park at Metra’s Market Square station (Lake Forest) and board the free shuttle. The show will include both indoor and outdoor displays, showcasing more than 100 businesses featuring state-of-the-art items and services for the home, unique gifts and experts who will advise you on home improvement, safety, health and recreation. The site is wheelchair accessible, as well. Browse, or get down to business Certainly you are welcome to booth hop as much as you like, but exhibitors will be selling their products, taking orders or offering mini-products on site. In most booths, you’ll have the best salesperson of all—the owner. “What better way to learn about a product or service than to pick up information informally and chat with specialists,” says Joanna Rolek, executive director of the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce and originator of the show. She recalls launching the event almost two decades ago because there wasn’t anything like it on the North Shore. Decorative accessories, products and services for the home, landscaping and gardening, health and fitness-related businesses, leisure ware (and probably some leisure wear), computer consultants and so much more. Take a break from those “shelter shows” on TV, and get your expert advice live and in person. Sandy Saldano, owner of Therapeutic Kneads (480 Elm Place, Highland Park, 847-266-0131), a professional massage therapy center, participates in this show and will offer dollar-a-minute massages and sample healthful products like essential oils and nutritionals. “A gentleman from Lake Forest, who was accompanied by his wife, was walking through the show with a cane. He came to our booth and asked for a massage, saying he was in pain from going around to the booths. But after his massage, he was able to continue on. Later in the day he came back, handed us his cane and said ‘You can keep this…you fixed me. I never expected to find you here at a home and leisure show, but I am so glad I came.’” The designers from The ABL Group (1550 Berkeley Road, Highland Park, 847-579-1600) will do free color consultations for those who want to be bolder with tones in their home or office, but just don’t know how. “Our exhibit space will include portfolios of interior design and remodeling projects we’ve done,” says George Markoutsas, who is also the energetic chairman of the home show’s organizing committee. “Color is the single most impactful and least expensive thing you can do to change the look and feel of your environment. We’re happy to tell you how. Just bring along some snapshots and, if you can, your fabric swatches. Let’s talk!”
Ravinia Plumbing and Heating (595 Roger Williams, Highland Park, 847-432-5561) is another frequent exhibitor. “We are a family company, so we really enjoy meeting the families who come out to this show,” says Dave Ariano, co-owner with his father Don. “We specialize in bathroom remodels. Having been in business since 1928, we know the inner workings of older and historic homes. We always give the public contractor pricing, plus we have just about any plumbing replacement part you could need. Not only can we remodel to achieve that retro or vintage look, we can actually get most old fixtures working like new again.” Thoughts for food An exciting addition to this award-winning event will be the “Taste of the Towns,” where restaurants from the sponsoring communities will host booths 847-432-0284 ehighlandpark.com and sell their specials. You can enjoy the food right there under the big tent on the school’s front lawn, or take your purchases home to enjoy later. Life’s short, so go ahead, do dessert first. The Cooling Station, Your Ice Cream Station (315 Waukegan Avenue, Highwood, 847-266-5164), will be the hot spot for cool treats, including the launch of their new band-name ice cream creation. While you are at the show, set a date for your own party at The Cooling Station and receive a discount. Also for the kids, “Build a Bear,” with its own rainbow star and birth certificate. And of course, Father’s Day weekend wouldn’t be complete without some outdoor chillin’ around the BBQ grill. You will flip over some traditional as well as very original entrées from the experts of Metropolitan Café (1791 St. Johns, Highland Park, 847-432-5800) and its Lake Forest sister restaurant, the Grill on Laurel. Come on by…and win! Feeling lucky? You just might take home more than great ideas; four $500 Shopping Sprees will be awarded, two to be spent in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff, two in Highland Park, courtesy of the respective Chambers. Now, that would make Father’s Day just about perfect! There just may be a few exhibit spaces left for the Lifestyle show. All exhibitors are members of one of the sponsoring chambers of commerce.
