Merging design, art and the body,<br />

the ‘As Long as it Lasts’ is <strong>Design</strong><br />

<strong>Miami</strong>’s first pop-up tat<strong>to</strong>o parlor.<br />

For three days, visi<strong>to</strong>rs and<br />

passersby will have the opportunity<br />

<strong>to</strong> get a tat<strong>to</strong>o, inked by a licensed<br />

professional, in one of eight<br />

specially-commissioned designs<br />

created by prominent artists and<br />

designers. What does it mean for a body <strong>to</strong> be ‘signed’ by an artist? What is<br />

the relationship between author and audience, and how far will art and<br />

design lovers go? Organized by Tobias Wong, Josee Lepage and Aric Chen,<br />

‘As Long as it Lasts’ will be part performance, part cultural barometer, part<br />

guest amenity. Like a manicure or Tarot card reading, drop-ins are<br />

welcomed. One design will be offered as a temporary tat<strong>to</strong>o.<br />

What is Nature? ⁄<br />

Studio Libertiny<br />

Studio Libertiny, founded by Tomáš Gabzdil Libertiny, believes that<br />

contemporary product manufacturing needs <strong>to</strong> be challenged. This design<br />

collective, based in The Netherlands, pursues their mission through the<br />

exploration of ostensibly vulnerable and ephemeral material. Their first<br />

highly publicized project involved beeswax: a vase formed by 40,000 bees<br />

building their hive within a mold devised by the studio. The studio dubbed<br />

this process “slow pro<strong>to</strong>typing,” a name that represents a literal<br />

description as well as a commentary on the era of computer-aided design.<br />

For <strong>Design</strong> <strong>Miami</strong> ⁄ 07, Studio Libertiny will apply their syllogistic design<br />

thinking <strong>to</strong> discarded artifacts of culture—printed pieces of paper.<br />

The collective will meticulously glue and press thick stacks of paper until<br />

they become like solid blocks of wood. Through this process, the paper<br />

is returned <strong>to</strong> its natural, pre-culturalized state, while retaining the<br />

manmade printed imagery.<br />

The resurrected wood will then be<br />

turned on a lathe, a traditional<br />

woodworking <strong>to</strong>ol, and carved in<strong>to</strong><br />

unique bowls.<br />
