APRIL GORNIK
A major, esteemed figure in the art world, April Gornik divides her time
between New York City and North Haven, Long Island. Ms. Gornik’s work can
be squarely placed in the distinguished American landscape tradition.
Devoid of people, her paintings portray nature but in a carefully composed
manner that draws on diverse sources of inspiration. The result is surreal
and sublime. Light plays a powerful role in her paintings, creating a sense of
mystery and allure, whether it is sunlight or moonlight. In a statement about
her work, she says that she likes her work to be intuitive, open to interpretation
and beautiful.
The Heckscher Museum will present a one-person exhibition of Ms. Gornik’s
work from May 2 to July 5, 2009. Her work can be found in the collections of
the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the Brooklyn Museum, the Dallas
Museum of Art, the Jewish Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,
the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
She is represented by the Danese Gallery in New York.

of sales associates by helping to drive sales and acting as the men’s
department Team Leader. In August 2005, following the Mitchells/Marshs
merger, Chris moved to Long Island to head up Marshs as the store manager.
A Dartmouth graduate, he worked with NBC Sports in New York for 5 years before
Roaring 20’s Gala – October 18, 2008 15
ABOUT THE HECKSCHER
Where classic meets contemporary
The Heckscher Museum seeks to thrive and grow in four basic areas—
education and public programs, collections, exhibitions, and physical expansion.
The Heckscher Museum of Art serves the community of Long Island through
the presentation of great art and art education programs. Since its creation, the
Museum has strived to engage people through a stimulating and inspiring
program of exhibitions and educational offerings dedicated to a full understanding
of the visual arts.
In 1920, the German-American industrialist and developer August Heckscher
opened the Museum and surrounding park for the benefit of the people of
Huntington and the local region. The Museum presented works by Old Masters
such as Lucas Cranach, Gustave Courbet, François Girardon, and Henry Raeburn
as well as important American painters like Edward and Thomas Moran,
Asher B Durand, and George Inness.
The modern life of The Heckscher Museum really began in 1957, when the
collection began to grow. Plans were developed for a more active exhibitions
schedule and a program of educational activities. In 1962, Eva Gatling was hired
as Director, one of the first women to direct an art museum. During her tenure,
the Museum made its most important acquisition with the purchase of George
Grosz’s Eclipse of the Sun— a monumental painting from the height of his activity in
Berlin in the 1920s. Greater emphasis was placed on education programs and improved
exhibitions. The addition of the Baker/Pisano Collection of American works
in 2001 was the single largest gift to the Museum since the founding donation.
A major historic preservation and renovation project, under the direction of
Centerbrook Architects, was initiated in 2007, upgrading the exhibition space and
highlighting the original architectural features of the building, installing new
wiring, and improving the fire suppression system. The Museum has more open
spaces, better lighting, and a fresher, brighter look allowing the original building
and the beautiful space to be more in evidence.
In the coming months and years, The Heckscher Museum of Art will present
more exhibitions curated in-house by our highly regarded curatorial team and in
collaboration with other museums. In this way, we will function as a creative
generator, as all important educational institutions do.
These are all steps toward the realization of a vision for The Heckscher
Museum of Art as a vibrant participant in the community, engaged with the ideas
and issues of the contemporary world. We are committed to a full partnership with
our community.

FROM THE CHAIR
Dear Friends,
Welcome to this year’s Heckscher Museum of
Art Gala, celebrating the Roaring 20’s, the
decade that marked the creation of our
wonderful Museum. For over 87 years, The
Heckscher has depended on the community’s
generosity, and with this assistance, we have
grown by leaps and bounds into the
acclaimed Museum we are today. The theme
of the Roaring 20’s is symbolic of returning to
our roots with the restoration of our beautiful building being completed this
year, and reminds us of our focus on continued success in the future.
I know you all join with me in congratulating our honorees April Gornik and
Christopher Mitchell. Both of these extraordinary individuals, together with
their families, have been true examples of leadership and philanthropy in our
communities. We are grateful to call them friends of The Heckscher and recognize
their achievements tonight. I would also like to thank Judith Streiter, our
Gala Chair, for her vision and leadership in making this evening so spectacular.
Her hard work, along with that of the committee and the dedicated staff at the
Museum, has made this event one to remember.
Thanks to the support provided by generous individuals and businesses, we
continue to fulfill our mission of engaging the people of Long Island through
stimulating and inspiring programs of exhibitions and education offerings
dedicated to a full understanding of the visual arts. On behalf of the entire
Board of Trustees at The Heckscher Museum of Art, we thank you for your
support.
Sincerely,
Margy Hargraves
Roaring 20’s Gala – October 18, 2008 17
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Friends,
What a great year it has been for The Heckscher!
We have elegantly restored galleries, a new website,
a new logo, a new newsletter, and an exciting
array of new exhibitions and educational programs.
The response has been enthusiastic from
both the critics and our visitors. Our membership
roles are growing, and we are creating new ways
for people to volunteer and become involved with the Museum.
This year’s gala reflects the energy and optimism that has infused the Museum.
For the first time, one of our honorees is a noted artist, April Gornik. April resides
in Suffolk County on the east end of Long Island, and she has developed an international
reputation as a painter of mystical landscapes that range from the
spiritual to the sublime to the surreal. By honoring April, we hope to underscore
The Heckscher Museum’s commitment to the artistic heritage of Long Island and
to contemporary visual artists. We are especially pleased that April Gornik will be
presenting an important body of work at The Heckscher in 2009.
Marshs clothing store has been an important presence here for decades, as a
cornerstone of the business community. Selecting Christopher Mitchell as an
honoree emphasizes the importance of The Heckscher’s relationship with the
town of Huntington and with the community. The Mitchell family has an especially
distinguished history in supporting cultural and other charitable causes. It
is obviously a central part of their philosophy to give back to the community and
help those in need.
Both of these distinguished individuals honor us with their presence tonight. I congratulate
them both for their accomplishments and thank them for their generosity.
Best regards,
Erik H. Neil, Ph.D.
Executive Director

2008 GALA COMMITTEE CHAIR
Dear Honorees, Colleagues, and Guests,
Warmest welcome to our Roaring 20’s Gala honoring two distinguished individuals
who have made such a positive difference in the Long Island community,
April Gornik and Christopher Mitchell. Congratulations and our thanks to them
for enriching our lives.
For decades, The Heckscher Museum of Art has focused on inspiring the people
of Long Island with acclaimed exhibitions and educational offerings. I am proud
to be part of an organization that is dedicated to providing a deep understanding
of the visual arts.
Tonight, we celebrate this legacy by returning to the era where it all began. I want
to thank members of the Gala Committee who tirelessly volunteered their time
and enthusiasm to insure the success of this evening. I would especially like to
thank Margy Hargraves, Erik Neil, Matt Campo, and the Development Department
for their commitment.
On behalf of the Committee, along with the Board of Trustees and Staff at The
EXHIBITIONS
Mythic Landscapes of America
November 15 through January 4
Landscape painting in America has often been about ideas of national identity
and the uniqueness of the country. The Heckscher Museum of Art is fortunate to
have an exceptionally strong collection of landscape paintings from the 19th- and
early 20th-centuries. As a group, they tend to emphasize the natural majesty of
the country with a delicate balance of the Real and the Ideal. Nature is most often
directly presented with little evidence of human activity. When human presence is
recorded, the balance is weighted toward the power of Nature. Settlement and
pastoral innocence achieve equilibrium in paintings. The themes of silence and
solitude appear repeatedly. In the Western works, we might see signs of redeeming
heroes, noble savages or laconic cowboys, but there is no indication of
conflict or strife.
In the more modern images, there is still an attempt toward calmness or spirituality,
although just as often there is a disruption of the myth. The commercial or
industrial comes to dominate the landscape. Mass culture reconfigures the experience.
American innocence has been lost, and we can no longer accept the
straightforward myth of a unique Arcadia. Yet, there is still a wistful remembrance,
if not a longing for that beauty.
Slobodkina Rediscovered:
A Pioneer of American Abstraction
January 10 through March 22
To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of her birth, a mini-retrospective of this
Russian-American artist will include works from The Heckscher Museum’s extensive
Slobodkina holdings, supplemented with works from the collection of the Slobodkina
Foundation, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and
the National Museum of American Art. Although Slobodkina’s earliest paintings are
impressionistic, under the influence of cubism she began working in an abstracted
style and her most important work is non-objective. A founding member of the
American Abstract Artists group in 1936, Slobodkina executed works in all media, but
is most widely known as the author/illustrator of the children’s book Caps for Sale.
Paintings, sculpture, and works on paper will be included in this installation, the first
venue of the larger traveling exhibition organized by the Slobodkina Foundation.
