Harmony & Discord
Rabbi Noah Leavitt, William Fischman Rabbinic Intern
The overwhelming focus in Parshat Bamidbar appears to be on accurately counting the Jewish people
and on properly organizing bnei Yisrael’s campsite. Each tribe is counted and the order in which
they are to proceed is stressed. “God spoke to Moshe and Aaron saying: The children of Israel, shall
encamp each man by his division with the flag staffs of their fathers’ house; some distance from the
tent of meeting they shall encamp.” (Bamidbar 2:1-2) It is not only the order in which the Jewish
people are to proceed that is emphasized, but also that each person has specific place in the camp in
which they need to live. At first glance these details may seem mundane, perhaps even somewhat
trivial; why does the Torah need to spend so much time describing the layout of the camp? In
the Kuzari Yehuda HaLevi suggests that the harmony and organization the Torah sought to achieve
was necessary in order for the Shechinah to dwell in the camp. Only when every person was correctly
placed and involved in their unique task would God’s presence be felt amongst the Jewish people.
Perhaps this emphasis on orderliness and harmony was meant to mirror the experience that the Jewish
people had when they stood at the foot of Mt. Sinai. There Rashi famously quotes a Midrash to
describe the state of the Jewish people, אחד - the encampment like one man with one
heart. The Jewish people existed in a state of perfect unity and it was only in that state that they were
able to receive the Torah. The Kuzari and perhaps also the Midrash seem to suggest that God’s revelation
is most felt when the Jewish people exist in a state of tranquility.
כאיש אחד בלב
Rabbi David Bigman raises a potential problem with the Kuzari’s approach. According to Rabbi Bigman,
Sefer Bamidbar can easily be divided up into three distinct sections. The first part deals
with counting and properly organizing the Jewish people. The second focuses on the rebellions
Moshe faces and the strains in the relationship between God and the Jewish people. Finally, the third
emphasizes the preparations for entering the Land of Israel. Based on the Kuzari’s interpretation one
might expect to find the most graphic descriptions of God’s revelation in the first part of Bamidbar.
However that is not the case, instead it is precisely at the greatest moments of tension and strife, such
as when Moshe faces the Korach’s rebellion, that God’s presence appears to be most strongly felt
amongst the Jewish people. At the same the Mishkan, with all of its formality and orderliness also
served as conduit for God’s revelation and was a constant symbol that the Shechinah dwelt with the
Jewish people. It appears that God’s presence can be felt both at moments of harmony and discord.
Our own lives are often dynamic and ever-changing, at times they may even seem chaotic. In this
world Yehuda HaLevi’s understanding of the connection between order and revelation still contains
important insight. Moments of formality and tranquility can enable to reflect on difficulties we may
encounter and also perhaps to live with a greater sense of God’s presence.
