<strong>Strengths</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>weaknesses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Siege</strong><br />

<strong>Eng<strong>in</strong>es</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>KhanWars</strong><br />

Besieg<strong>in</strong>g is an ancient battle tactic, for which every ruler needs <strong>the</strong> appropriate siege eng<strong>in</strong>es. In<br />

<strong>KhanWars</strong>, players have at <strong>the</strong>ir disposal 4 type <strong>of</strong> siege eng<strong>in</strong>es <strong>and</strong> 2 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m can be used to try <strong>and</strong><br />

destroy an enemy build<strong>in</strong>g, after a successful attack. These units are known for be<strong>in</strong>g pretty slow,<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g a high carry<strong>in</strong>g capacity, <strong>and</strong> for hav<strong>in</strong>g very good <strong>of</strong>fensive <strong>and</strong> defensive capabilities. On <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y take-up a lot <strong>of</strong> population <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir price is extremely high. The siege eng<strong>in</strong>es are<br />

very well suited for large battles, both <strong>in</strong> attack <strong>and</strong> defense. Their low speed makes <strong>the</strong>m quite<br />

unsuitable for attacks aim<strong>in</strong>g to steal <strong>the</strong> enemy’s resources. The siege eng<strong>in</strong>es receive a bonus from<br />

<strong>the</strong> skill “<strong>Siege</strong>” which <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>the</strong>ir attack <strong>and</strong> defense by up to 30%, if <strong>the</strong> skill is at its highest<br />

level. Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, thanks to <strong>the</strong>ir special unit, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Siege</strong> Tower, <strong>the</strong> Russians can <strong>in</strong>crease this bonus<br />

up to 45%, which 15% more than o<strong>the</strong>r nations. Four unit types fall <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> category <strong>of</strong> “<strong>Siege</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>es”<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are all constructed at <strong>the</strong> Workshop.<br />

Ram – this is <strong>the</strong> first <strong>and</strong> most simple siege eng<strong>in</strong>e. Its specialty is to overcome <strong>the</strong> enemy wall. In<br />

a battle this unit makes <strong>the</strong> first strike <strong>and</strong> aims to destroy <strong>the</strong> wall <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> enemy, so o<strong>the</strong>r units can<br />

concentrate on hitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> enemy army. The Ram takes-up <strong>the</strong> least population <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> cheapest if<br />

all siege eng<strong>in</strong>es. This is underst<strong>and</strong>able, as <strong>the</strong> unit has no attack capabilities aga<strong>in</strong>st any unit type<br />

<strong>and</strong> its range is just 1. Never<strong>the</strong>less, this unit is an important part <strong>of</strong> any large army <strong>and</strong> even though<br />

it is used <strong>in</strong> small amounts, its presence can determ<strong>in</strong>e whe<strong>the</strong>r you get a good start <strong>in</strong> a battle.<br />

Ballistician – a ma<strong>in</strong> siege eng<strong>in</strong>e, suitable for caus<strong>in</strong>g severe damage to enemy troops, from a large<br />

distance. This is <strong>the</strong> second siege eng<strong>in</strong>e that each player gets to build. Its price is slightly higher than<br />

that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ram <strong>and</strong> its population requirement is 6. This unit is extremely useful <strong>in</strong> battle as it has<br />

excellent attack capabilities aga<strong>in</strong>st all unit types <strong>and</strong> has <strong>the</strong> maximum range <strong>of</strong> 5, which allows it to<br />

hit <strong>the</strong> enemy’s back rows. Like <strong>the</strong> Ram, <strong>the</strong> Ballistician has no capability to destroy an enemy<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g. Like all siege eng<strong>in</strong>es, this unit is slow, but its efficiency on <strong>the</strong> battle field makes it pretty<br />

useful, that is why it is recommended to use it <strong>in</strong> high amounts.<br />

Catapult – very expensive <strong>and</strong> slow to build, <strong>the</strong> Catapult is used ma<strong>in</strong>ly to destroy levels <strong>of</strong> enemy<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs. This unit is available to players at a later stage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> game, than <strong>the</strong> Ram <strong>and</strong> Ballistician,<br />

as it requires more build<strong>in</strong>gs before it can be constructed. The Catapult takes-up 8 population <strong>and</strong> is<br />

slower <strong>and</strong> more expensive than <strong>the</strong> Rams <strong>and</strong> Ballisticians. The ability to destroy build<strong>in</strong>gs is not its<br />

only strength. Its battle capabilities are not to be underestimated, as it, like <strong>the</strong> ballistician, has a<br />

range <strong>of</strong> 5 <strong>and</strong> can hit <strong>the</strong> enemy’s back rows.


Trebuchet – this is <strong>the</strong> most expensive siege eng<strong>in</strong>e, with <strong>the</strong> most build<strong>in</strong>g requirements, hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> highest population requirement <strong>of</strong> 10 <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong> slowest one to tra<strong>in</strong>. Never<strong>the</strong>less, all <strong>the</strong>se are<br />

countered by <strong>the</strong> higher chance to destroy a build<strong>in</strong>g, by <strong>the</strong> excellent attack <strong>and</strong> defense statistics<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> maximum range <strong>of</strong> 5. Despite all <strong>of</strong> its drawbacks, this unit is an essential part <strong>of</strong> a balanced,<br />

strong, large army <strong>and</strong> is not to be underestimated.<br />

Us<strong>in</strong>g siege eng<strong>in</strong>es <strong>in</strong> reasonable amounts, <strong>the</strong>ir correct position <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> formation along with skills<br />

<strong>and</strong> upgrades, can be <strong>the</strong> key to success <strong>in</strong> almost every battle. Even though <strong>the</strong>y take-up a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

population <strong>and</strong> are pretty expensive, siege eng<strong>in</strong>es are vital part <strong>of</strong> every big army, regardless <strong>of</strong><br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r it attack<strong>in</strong>g or defend<strong>in</strong>g castles.
