The City of London Academy (CLA) is 

at the forefront of innovation in the 

p r o v i s i o n o f b u s i n e s s a n d

Overview 

This course will enable students to gain employment or 

continue their studies at a university level. The course is made 

up of sixteen units, four core units and twelve specialist units.

profile is likely to include one of the following: 

1. a BTEC Level 3 qualification in Creative Media 

Production 

2. a GCE Advanced level profile which demonstrates 

strong performance in a relevant subject or an

GENERAL ENGLISH CLASSES 

Our General English group classes are the perfect 

option for individuals wishing to brush up on their 

English in all skill areas: Reading, writing, speaking, 

listening and grammar. These classes are for preintermediate 

or upper-intermediate levels. Small 

group classes also available with a maximum of 6 

students. 

• 15 guided learning hours per week, 3 

hours per day 

• Monday – Friday, morning or afternoon ( 

15 minute break included) 

• Experienced, native English Teachers 

• Lively group classes with a variety of 

nationalities 

• Average class size is between 8 – 10 

students 

• Course duration: any time up to 1 year 

Our experienced team of native English teachers 

employ a wide range of techniques to keep the 

classes lively and interesting. Students will be 

exposed to authentic material to ensure that the 

language learnt is always relevant and of a high 

standard. The vocabulary explored in the classes will 

range from basic subjects to more complicated 

topics. 

CEFR Levels & Progress: A1/A2 cover Beginner, 

Elementary and Pre-Intermediate Levels; B1 is 

similar to Intermediate; B2 is upper 

intermediate , C1 Advanced and C2 

Proficiency. 

Students who can speak English to a level below 

CEFR B1 need to apply for a Student Visitor Visa. The 

Tier 4 General Student Visa is only suitable for 

students who can already speak English to a B1 

standard, but are able to follow a course at B2. 

During interview, your level will be assessed by a 

member of the English Department who will 

recommend which course you should follow. If you 

are a complete beginner (at CEFR A1) then you will 

not be able to follow a course in the UK at present.

IELTS Preparation Classes 

These days the IELTS Academic examination can prove vital to 

securing further study at Universities where the main language is 

English. It is also a requirement from the UK Border Agency for many 

students needing a visa. IELTS is accepted in the UK, USA, Australia, 

New Zealand and Canada.

• Course duration: any time up to 6 months 

• Level: Intermediate - Advanced 

• We train you in the techniques vital to ensuring IELTS 

success 

• Frequent feedback and testing on your progress 

This course can prove critical for any student planning to study a 

university course 

Conversation Classes 

Additional daily conversation classes are available for all English 

students wishing to develop their conversation skills. These 1 hour 

classes are a great opportunity to get to know students from other 

classes and speak about a range of topics in a friendly, relaxed 

environment.

Before starting your English Course at the City of 

London Academy, all potential English students 

receive a Detailed Needs Analysis (DNA). The DNA is 

a unique survey to assess your level of English and 

your strengths and weaknesses. Chat with our 

friendly Student Adviser over a cup of tea or coffee 

to design your course to match your needs.

Our experienced Academic Management Team of 

native English teachers are trained to use a wide

stimulating. Students receive maximum in-class 

correction and feedback, as well as Monthly 

Feedback reports to see just how far you have

feedback and correction in class, but they will also

Other information 

Academic Support Module 

This is an additional module that runs throughout t 

the year in addition to the usual modules that are 

listed per semester. The academic support module 

addresses the skills that are necessary to succeed in 

an academic and professional business 

environment. They include reading, writing, 

presentations, workshops, debating, referencing, 

study skills, group work, tutorials and cross-cultural 

communications. Students will be able to apply 

these skills to improve their current academic 

performance. The same skills will also benefit 

students in their future careers. 

Learning Facilities 

The college has 2 state-of-the-art multimedia labs 

and numerous large classrooms. A number of these 

are equipped with Hitachi Star Boards with 

interactive touchscreens and multimedia projectors 

that enable lecturers and students to teach and 

learn in a more dynamic way. Students have access 

to a library of resource books, journals and 

reference material that have been carefully selected 

to cover the specific areas related to the courses that 

run at CLA.

Student Welfare 

Airport pick-up Service 

Arriving in a new country for the first time after a 

long journey is always a daunting experience. To 

help our students, we offer a meet and greet service 

at London airports. You will be met by a member of 

staff at the arrivals area who will help you with your 

bags and bring you by car to the college, or if you 

arrive in the evening or weekend, to your prearranged 

accommodation. 

Please indicate when you apply if you need to use 

this service. 

Accommodation Service 

We can help with finding suitable short and longterm 

accommodation for the duration of your 

course through our accommodation service partner. 

The majority of students in London usually live in 

shared flats or houses with other international 

students, and this is something we would 

recommend to all of our students. 

We offer a range of free and subsidised activities for 

all students. Please see the notice boards for more 

details. 

Welfare and Support 

We understand that living and studying in a foreign 

country can be difficult, and culture shock affects 

everyone – even the most seasoned traveller! We 

have a multi-national team who are knowledgeable 

about many countries and cultures and we can help 

you out if you have any questions or difficulties. 

Student Common Room 

We have dedicated the top floor of the building to 

students. Here, you can relax with friends, watch 

the news on the flat-screen TV, eat lunch or just 

enjoy the view of the west-end of London. There is a 

refrigerator and a microwave, as well as café-style 

table and chairs. 

Social Programme 

We operate an exciting social programme for 

students at CLA. Recent activities have included a 

day out in Leeds, a visit to Covent Garden and trips 

to some of the outstanding free museums around 

London. Whatever we organise, you will get a 

chance to meet other students from the college and 

to understand more about British culture.
