WRAS WRAS APPROVED PRODUCTS This article was written by Dr Steve Tuckwell, WRAS Technical Advisor. Why does it matter? Throughout the UK, premises which receive a public water supply come under the scope of the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 or Water Supply (Water Fittings) (Scotland) Byelaws 2014 (the ‘regulations’), which apply to all parts of plumbing systems after the point where water leaves the water company’s pipe. This covers underground supply pipes, valves, water fittings, taps, WCs, heating systems and all plumbed-in domestic or industrial water-using appliances, or equipment which convey or receive water supplied by a public water undertaker (‘mains supplies’). The regulations require water fittings to be ‘of an appropriate quality and standard’ to ensure that their design and manufacture prevents waste or contamination of drinking water supplies. Problems arise if, for example, backflow prevention devices fail to work or a stop valve fails to fully isolate the supply. Inappropriate materials of construction within a water-using product can contaminate the water – for example by leaching metals or by giving the water an unpleasant taste or odour, or encouraging microbial growth causing ill health. You might think no-one would sell a plumbing fitting which was illegal to install, but sadly you’d be wrong. Under the regulations, it’s not illegal to sell such a fitting, but it’s the installer’s duty to ensure that water fittings do comply. So - if you’re specifying, purchasing or installing water fittings, how can you tell if the product complies? The best way is to use WRAS Approved Products. The Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) administers the WRAS Approved Product scheme. Fittings are tested by laboratories which are independent of WRAS and representatives of the Water Suppliers who enforce the regulations, assess the results and endorse those which comply, on behalf of all UK water suppliers. When you’re buying or installing products look for the logo: Approved products are listed in Section 1 of the Water Fittings and Materials Directory, which is available free-of-charge on-line at www.wras.co.uk/Directory What are installation requirements and notes? Choosing a WRAS Approved fitting ensures you are using one that is designed and manufactured to meet government or national standards, but how it is installed can also affect whether or not it complies with the regulations. Some approved products, whilst appropriately designed and constructed, may not meet every installation need. For example, if an appliance had a clear plastic water inlet hose, this can allow light into the water path and encourage algal growth, causing poor water quality. So the product needs to be installed only where the hose is kept dark, such as behind panels or in cupboards. In other products there may ETM Summer 2015 25
