The “Rheingold” – a milestone in the
history of rail transport!
In 1928, Deutsche Reichsbahn launched the “Rheingold-Express” in a bid to
compete with the Orient Express company. As it travelled between the Alps
and the North Sea, its unprecedented standards of comfort and luxury soon
earned the train a leading position in the European rail transport market.
In 1962, Deutsche Bundesbahn relaunched the railway star with a totally
revised concept, creating a new European benchmark for contemporary travel
comfort thanks to its spacious layout, air-conditioning and smooth running,
even at high speeds. This was the cornerstone for the development of the
following IC and ICE generations.

Racing into the future with Class 103!
The year 1965 saw another milestone in the
history of modern railway travel, when Deutsche
Bundesbahn inaugurated the prototype E 03,
later renamed the 103: this was the most powerful
express locomotive in the world and had a
top speed of 200 km/h. With 7800 kW (standard
103 model), six driving axles and an unmistakable
dynamic design, the TEE “Rheingold” locomotive
was and still is the sports version amongst the
railway giants in operation on the new-build and
upgraded lines of Deutsche Bahn AG. Its powerful
electric traction in combination with three
independently acting braking systems make the
loco not only extremely fast, but also very safe.

There are two restaurant cars (each accommodates
42/48 passengers) for your catering requirements.
While they feast their eyes on the passing scenery,
your guests can enjoy excellent food from the
on-board kitchen, served in the spacious restaurant
cars. Experienced restaurant-car caterers and
refrigerated rooms and pantries on board provide
delicious culinary highlights, also on journeys
which last several days. It is up to you to choose:
whether a menu of international cuisine or local
specialities, from a star-winning chef or simply
a small snack. We cater exactly to your wishes –
in every respect.

The club car –
always a talking point.
A top speed of 200 km/h and luxurious comfort
make the “Rheingold” ideal for longer journeys.
As you travel along in style, invite your guests to
join you in the “Rheingold Club”, a coffee-house
on wheels that serves as the popular communi -
cative centre of the train. There is a cosy bar
where you can relax and enjoy a Martini or cocktail
to the sound of piano music. The Club car
has an area with 25 swivel seats at coffee-house
tables that invite passengers to sit down and chat.
The dome car –
see and be seen.
The “Rheingold” dome car is in a class of its own:
its glazed panorama cabin gives up to 22 passengers
a totally new perspective on travel and lets
them enjoy the view from the top, as it were. This
is communication at the highest level – a unique

chartered with other special-purpose cars from
the vast Deutsche Bahn fleet, such as a luggage
car, dance car, saloon or sleeping-car.
But despite all the nostalgia – when it comes
to safety and travel comfort, the TEE “Rheingold”
features state-of-the-art technology. It goes
with out saying that all vehicles are serviced at
the special Deutsche Bahn depots and satisfy
stringent safety standards.

The following applies to all the above cars:
original TEE vehicles, 1 st class, non-smoking,
air-conditioning, crimson and pale ivory TEE
paintwork, top speed 200 km/h, can be used
in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (D-A-CH).
Class 103 express locomotive can be used on
15 kV/16.6 Hz electrified lines on the D-A-CH
rail networks, except for Gotthard mountain line
and Cologne–Frankfurt/Nuremberg–Ingolstadt
high-speed lines. Diesel locomotives with central
energy supply equipment for the TEE cars are
required on non-electrified lines. Maximum of
15 cars per train on the DB network. Certain line
sections and stations may permit only a lower
number of cars per train.
The TEE “Rheingold” is based in Cologne.
1) licensed for use in Italy: in addition to “D-A-CH”,
also licensed for use in Italy, France, Belgium, the
Netherlands, Luxembourg, Poland, the Czech Republic,
Slovakia and almost all other standard-gauge railway
networks on the European continent, including the line
from Poland to Kaliningrad, Russian Federation).
2) The dome car is privately owned by AKE-Eisenbahn
touristik (Gerolstein) and is chartered out by
Deutsche Bahn AG together with the TEE “Rheingold”.
