John Nuch, Info and Computer Science Matt Talluto*, Grad Biological Sciences The Spring Pops Wind Symphony operates as an extension of the UCI Anteater Band, performing a mixture of symphonic pops, jazz, and light classics. Its origins can be traced back to 1984, when the Anteater Band began a tradition of switching to ‘concert band’ mode during the spring. The Anteater Band is a flagship ensemble of the University, performing at numerous athletic events and campus functions throughout the year. It is one of the few campus organizations to provide an educational and performance opportunity open to all motivated instrumentalist regardless of major and without audition. In addition to ‘classical’ music during the spring, members gain experience performing in a wide variety of styles, such as swing, rock, pop, and Latin. The Anteater Band and Spring Pops Wind Symphony are parts of the larger UCI Athletic Bands, under the supervision and financial support of UCI Athletics. Mark Hamamura, Conductor Mark Hamamura is the Director of Athletic Bands at the University of California, Irvine, where he oversees the Anteater Band, Zot Corps, and Spring Pops Wind Symphony, and acts as sponsor for the Lambda Alpha chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honorary band fraternity. While at UCI, he has served as founding director of the Symphonic Band, and also composed, arranged, and conducted for the Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, and various Chamber Ensembles. In addition to Kappa Kappa Psi, he holds memberships in Phi Beta Kappa, the College Band Directors National Association, and the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles. Mr. Hamamura received his B.A. cum laude in Music and his M.S. in Physics from UCI, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate. When not volunteering his spare time as a band director, he works as a graduate research assistant at the UCI Center for Functional Onco-Imaging. Kappa Kappa Psi Kappa Kappa Psi operates primarily as a student service and leadership recognition society whose chief aim is to assist in developing leadership and enthusiasm. Its goals are to provide the band not only with organized and concentrated service activities, but to give its membership valid and wholesome experiences in organization, leadership and social contracts. The Lambda Alpha chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi was charted on June 1 st , 2002 at the University of California, Irvine.

After a few quarters of being named "UCI Jazz Band II", the official moniker of "Monday Night Jazz Ensemble" was given to the ensemble to help distinguish it as a true second jazz band. The Monday Night Jazz Ensemble made its debut performance at the 2002 Spring Music Festival. Designed for intermediate level jazz players, the group continues to grow while learning valuable techniques in ensemble playing, improvisation, sight-reading skills and overall musical leadership. Jitterbugs Swing Dance Club The Jitterbugs appear in tonight's concert as the guests of the Monday Night Jazz Ensemble. The Jitterbugs spend their academic year giving free swing dancing lessons at the UCI Anthill Pub & Grille. They also travel to different swing dance venues and perform or give lessons. Some of the dances they teach are: Lindy Hop, Balboa & Shag. They welcome all people, of all ages and dancing abilities. Marques Lyons, Conductor Marques Lyons is a graduate student at the University of California, Irvine. He's currently studying to obtain an M.F.A. degree in Jazz Performance & Composition. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from UCI in Spring 1999. After 2 1/2 years of working in various bands around Southern California, Marques decided to return to school to obtain a Master's Degree. He's currently studying trombone with George McMullen, the musical director for the Brian Setzer Orchestra, and composition with Kei Akagi, Miles Davis' last recorded keyboard player. He ultimately hopes to establish a career in music, be it teaching, business or performance.
