Kyle Burnham, Conductor Kyle Burnham, Drumset/composition, is an active jazz musician in the Southern California jazz scene. He currently holds a B.A. degree in music composition from Cal State University Bakersfield and is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in jazz studies from UCI. Kyle has studied drumset under notable drummers such as Peter Erskine, Bruce Becker, Steve Houghton and Sherman Ferguson. He has studied composition under Dr. Doug Davis and Kei Akagi. Kyle has won several awards as a drummer and as a composer which include being a three time winner of best drummer and best composer/arranger at the Pacific Collegiate Jazz festival at UC Berkeley; as well as a two time winner of first prize in the "New Direction" composition contest sponsored by the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. Kyle has also had the privilege to play with the following jazz greats: Randy Brecker, Conte Candoli, Ernie Watts, Bill Waltrous, Kris Tiner, Darek Oles, and Wadada Leo Smith. Spring Music Festival The mission of the Spring Music Festival is to bring together UCI's “intermediate” level instrumental music ensembles and provide a public performance opportunity for their members. In particular, we believe that such an opportunity provides the growing musician with an invaluable educational experience, and allows participating ensembles to focus and work towards a common goal of excellence in performance. Last year, the Spring Music Festival accounted for the sole public performance opportunity of an estimated 70% of all non-music majors involved in Music Department instrumental ensembles during the Spring Quarter. United by the ideal that concerts such as this are a vital and necessary component to our growth and development as musicians, the Lamda Alpha chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, UCI Athletic Bands, and the Directors and Members of the participating ensembles have worked together to bring you this event. The Spring Music Festival receives no university financial support, and relies entirely on donations for its production. Hence you, the listening audience, have played a crucial role in making this event possible. Thank you for your support!
