High Commissioner<br />
visits Australia and New Zealand<br />
UN High Commissioner for Refugees<br />
Mr Ruud Lubbers made a short visit to<br />
Australia and New Zealand in late<br />
March meeting with key ministers,<br />
officials and NGOs on both sides of the<br />
Tasman.<br />
In Australia, Mr. Lubbers met with<br />
the Minister for Immigration,<br />
Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs<br />
Senator Amanda Vanstone and Minister<br />
for Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs<br />
Mr Gary Hardgrave, as well as Foreign<br />
Minister Downer and the Prime<br />
Minister, John Howard. He also visited<br />
the Blacktown Migrant Resource Centre<br />
to view the range of services provided by<br />
Australia to resettled refugees, spoke at<br />
a lunch of business leaders and met<br />
with representatives from key NGOs.<br />
Mr Lubbers was accompanied on his<br />
visit by Erika Feller, UNHCR’s Director<br />
of International Protection and Jean-<br />
Marie Fakhouri, Director of the Asia<br />
Pacific Bureau.<br />
In New Zealand, Mr Lubbers met with<br />
the Foreign Minister Phil Goff,<br />
Immigration Minister Paul Swain,<br />
Prime Minister Helen Clark, and The<br />
Honourable Dame Silvia Cartwright,<br />
Governor General of New Zealand. He<br />
also visited the refugee status<br />
determination branch at the New<br />
Zealand Immigration Service, officially<br />
opened the new offices of the Refugee<br />
Status and Appeals Authority and<br />
toured the Mangere Refugee<br />
Resettlement Centre.<br />
It was at Mangere, where Mr Lubbers’<br />
visit coincided with the arrival from<br />
Afghanistan of the families of the<br />
‘Tampa boys’.<br />
