The NMA’s emergency telephone is staffed around<br />

the clock throughout the year. Should a ship under<br />

the Norwegian flag find itself in difficulties anywhere<br />

in the world, duty staff in Haugesund are ready to help.<br />

“It’s often possible to resolve matters there<br />

and then,” says Alf Tore Sørheim, section<br />

head <strong>for</strong> inspection and emergency preparedness<br />

at the NMA. “Many things can’t<br />

wait until the next day. Keeping a vessel in<br />

service is crucial <strong>for</strong> shipping companies –<br />

delays mean lost revenue.”<br />

Norwegian registration provides a guarantee<br />

that help from the NMA is never far<br />

away. The emphasis is on ensuring that<br />

the emergency phone is staffed by competent<br />

personnel who can access the right<br />

databases, quickly call up a certificate or<br />

respond fast to a possible application <strong>for</strong><br />

exemption.<br />

“Feedback we’ve received indicates that<br />

the level of service and accessibility can<br />

vary under certain other flags,” says Sørheim.<br />

“We want Norwegian ships to sail<br />

as long as their safety is good.”<br />

Companies with ships under <strong>for</strong>eign<br />

flags have occasionally been tempted to<br />

seek help from the NMA, but must then<br />

be referred to the country of registration.<br />

The Norwegian authorities cannot issue<br />

an exemption, <strong>for</strong> example, when the ship<br />
