Trail users might come in for an ice cream cone or a coffee at first, but Normington finds her number of repeat customers from the trail to be increasing. “It’s not uncommon for us to have people eat breakfast here, then go for a ride or walk on the trail for a few hours, and come right back here for lunch,” she said. Recognizing the benefit of the trail to the business, Windham Junction Country Gift Shop & Kitchen has sponsored a section of the trail and also sells trail maps, proceeds of which benefit trail maintenance and expansion. The mainly flat Derry-Windham Rail Trail, which stretches from Hood Park in Derry to the intersection of Route 111 and Route 28 near the Windham-Salem town line, takes users through a variety of bucolic landscapes, including the shops and restaurants located in Derry’s charming downtown and residential areas, and alongside marshes and ponds, traveling mostly through shaded wooded areas. “You really feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere,” said Derry Rail Trail Alliance Vice President Mark Connors. Indeed, those on the trail stand a good chance of seeing some of the abundant wildlife common along the trail, including duck, geese, beavers, heron, deer, owls, turtles, and fisher cats. All of this makes the Derry-Windham section of the Granite State Rail Trail a popular destination year-round. And it’s not just locals who are making use of the trail. Connecticut tell her he drove all the way from The Nutmeg State to the Derry-Londonderry region just to ride on the trail. “That gentleman came in to grab a coffee after his ride, and then said he was going to grab supper at a restaurant in town before heading back home,” Davis said. “The word is getting out about how great the rail trail is, and that’s good for business.” And business is sure to increase for The Grind, Windham Junction Country Gift Shop & Kitchen, and other businesses located near the trail as its paved sections continue to expand, which will attract more users. An additional quarter mile of of trail will be paved this spring in Windham, which will connect to the Salem portion of the trail, and from there into Massachusetts. And as mentioned above, an additional section of the trail in Londonderry will be paved in the spring of 2015. As for Davis and Shea at The Grind, they’re preparing to benefit from this increased bicycle-related economic development made possible by the rail trail. “We’re planning an outdoor dining space and are getting some bike racks,” said Shea.
