In addition to our face-to-face
programme, the Centre for Medical
Education offers three new online
distance learning courses in Medical
Education. Students on these courses
are supported by an online distance
induction programme. This promotes
familiarity with the tools, processes and
facilities available to you during your
academic journey with us.
why go online?
• In response to feedback from past
and present course participants
we have developed new
postgraduate programmes in
Medical Education. We are moving
to an e-learning environment using
the latest developments in IT and
incorporating a range of exciting
interactive teaching and assessment
techniques. These enable peer
interaction and include podcasts,
webinars, video clips, formative
feedback and much more!
• Modern technology has allowed
distance learning to become
more “social” and our new courses
embrace this dimension. Course
participants and tutors have greater
contact with each other, enhancing
the learning experience. The course
has a nurturing learning climate −
one which caters for a variety of
learning needs and styles.
• Our new courses are geared for
the 21st Century learner, with the
material based on best evidence
medical education. Graduates are
equipped with a strong pedagogical
foundation and understanding
of key trends and innovations in
Medical Education. Assessments are

participants’ workplace setting.

who should enrol?
Healthcare professionals who wish
to gain a prestigious qualification in
Medical Education that is recognised
by the Higher Education Academy.
All our participants receive a good
balance between theory and practice
that allows you to perform effectively in
your field.
Face-to-face and online distance
learners have access to an extensive
seminar programme run by the Institute
of Health Skills and Education as well as
the College of Medicine, Dentistry and
Nursing.
We arrange visits for our face-to-face
students to Ninewells Hospital and
Medical School, one of the largest
teaching hospitals in Europe. Students
are also able to attend seminars at
the College of Life Sciences, a worldleading
research centre.
Our courses are aimed at those new to
teaching and training and those who
wish to gain further skills and knowledge
in the area of medical education.

• Modules covering relevant themes
within medical education
The Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma
and Masters in Medical Education
• The Postgraduate Certificate
(60 credits) will equip practitioners
to be teachers driven by a strong
pedagogical and evidence-based
approach. It will consist of 4 modules
– 2 core (“Teaching and Learning
in Medical Education” and “The
Principles of Assessment in Medical
Education”) + 2 options from a list of
at least 12.
• The Diploma (an additional 60
credits) will equip practitioners to
be leaders in medical education
and will consist of an additional
4 modules – 2 core (“Curriculum
Planning in Medical Education” and
“Management and Leadership in
Medical Education”) + 2 options
from a list of at least 8. Those wishing
to progress to the Masters will also
be required to study the module
“Medical Education Research” as an
additional core.
• The Masters (an additional 60
credits) will equip practitioners to
be educational researchers utilising
rigorous and diverse methodologies
to answer innovative and original
questions. It will consist of either:
a 10,000-15,000 word dissertation or
a research based journal article (45
credits) plus an additional optional
module.
