In addition to our face-to-face<br />

programme, the Centre for Medical<br />

Education <strong>of</strong>fers three new <strong>online</strong><br />

distance <strong>learning</strong> courses in Medical<br />

Education. Students on these courses<br />

are supported by an <strong>online</strong> distance<br />

induction programme. This promotes<br />

familiarity with the tools, processes and<br />

facilities available to you during your<br />

academic journey with us.<br />

• In response to feedback from past<br />

and present course participants<br />

we have developed new<br />

postgraduate programmes in<br />

Medical Education. We are moving<br />

to an e-<strong>learning</strong> environment using<br />

the latest developments in IT and<br />

incorporating a range <strong>of</strong> exciting<br />

interactive teaching and assessment<br />

techniques. These enable peer<br />

interaction and include podcasts,<br />

webinars, video clips, formative<br />

feedback and much more!<br />

• Modern technology has allowed<br />

distance <strong>learning</strong> to become<br />

more “social” and our new courses<br />

embrace this dimension. Course<br />

participants and tutors have greater<br />

contact with each other, enhancing<br />

the <strong>learning</strong> experience. The course<br />

one which caters for a variety <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>learning</strong> needs and styles.<br />

Face-to-face and <strong>online</strong> distance<br />

learners have access to an extensive<br />

seminar programme run by the Institute<br />

<strong>of</strong> Health Skills and Education as well as<br />

the College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medicine</strong>, Dentistry and<br />

Nursing.<br />

We arrange visits for our face-to-face<br />

students to Ninewells Hospital and<br />

Medical <strong>School</strong>, one <strong>of</strong> the largest<br />

teaching hospitals in Europe. Students<br />

are also able to attend seminars at<br />

the College <strong>of</strong> Life Sciences, a worldleading<br />

research centre.<br />

Our courses are aimed at those new to<br />

teaching and training and those who<br />

wish to gain further skills and knowledge<br />

in the area <strong>of</strong> medical education.<br />

The Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma<br />

and Masters in Medical Education<br />

• The Postgraduate Certificate<br />

(60 credits) will equip practitioners<br />

to be teachers driven by a strong<br />

pedagogical and evidence-based<br />

approach. It will consist <strong>of</strong> 4 modules<br />

– 2 core (“Teaching and Learning<br />

in Medical Education” and “The<br />

Principles <strong>of</strong> Assessment in Medical<br />

Education”) + 2 options from a list <strong>of</strong><br />

at least 12.<br />

• The Diploma (an additional 60<br />

credits) will equip practitioners to<br />

be leaders in medical education<br />

and will consist <strong>of</strong> an additional<br />

4 modules – 2 core (“Curriculum<br />

Planning in Medical Education” and<br />

“Management and Leadership in<br />

Medical Education”) + 2 options<br />

from a list <strong>of</strong> at least 8. Those wishing<br />

to progress to the Masters will also<br />

be required to study the module<br />

“Medical Education Research” as an<br />

additional core.<br />

• The Masters (an additional 60<br />

credits) will equip practitioners to<br />

be educational researchers utilising<br />

rigorous and diverse methodologies<br />

to answer innovative and original<br />

questions. It will consist <strong>of</strong> either:<br />

a 10,000-15,000 word dissertation or<br />

a research based journal article (45<br />

credits) plus an additional optional<br />

module.<br />
