In June 2011, the sky above
the city of Kavala was filled with
airplanes and seaplanes for two
hours during the first Kavala
Air Show. Our motto:«Lift your
head high» worked perfectly for
thousands of spectators.
More than 20,000 people
gathered in the main coastal
area of around 3,5 km while
even more residents watched
the show from the windows and
balconies of their homes.
The June ’11 Kavala Air Show
was an unprecedented event to have been organized in the area and it proved so exciting for
the public that it aroused the need for repetition.
As a result, the Mayor of the City of Kavala along with the local and regional authorities of
Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, AOPA Hellas (Aircraft Owner Pilot Association) and the College
of Egnatia Aviation S.A., expect to establish this as an annual event of international aviation
on the grounds that it may not only promote the ideals of aviation and flying but also develop

into an important growth driver at multiple
levels for our city.
The schedule of demonstrations designed
to overcome this major of 2011, which lasted
two hours and includeds even teen aerial
(aircraft, seaplanes, airships and brightballoons)
general aviation of all kinds, made acrobatic
harmonious lines for mingin the airwith
smoke and fireworks and seaplanes to
ditch into the harbor.
On 22nd,23rd and 24th June which is to
take place on the same site and it hopefully
shall be a much more spectacular celebration.
Conclusively, most-if not all- municipalities
in the country are organizing events aiming
at maintaining links to tradition. Kavala inherits
traditions and makes a step forward
by «reversing the rules of the game»; it lifts
its head high, virtually and metaphorically,
addressing the future!

You can reach KAVALA
By air: with daily scheduled flights from Athens Airport
to Megas Alexandros (Alexander the Great) Airport of
Chryssoupoli, situated 30 km away from the town of
Kavala.
Regular air services are carried out all year through,
connecting Kavala with big cities of Europe. Besides,
chartered flights are very frequent in the summer.
By car or bus: Kavala has regular connection with
Interregional Bus Lines (KTEL) from and to Thessaloniki
and Athens. Moreover, there is an excellent road
network through the entire Prefecture and regular
transport services.
By train: up to Thessaloniki or Drama and then to
Kavala by bus or car.
By boat/ferry: Kavala is connected with all the islands
of the Northern Aegean Sea with frequent itineraries of
various ferry lines.

Egnatia Aviation started training in Greece
in July 2006 but has already been established
in the commercial training and license conversions
areas, due to the quality of training,
customer focus, low costs, plus, the suitability
of the airports used and the new modern aircrafts
and simulator it operates. Egnatia Aviation
uses a fleet of New Generation Diamond
diesel aircraft, a state-of-the-art simulator,
experienced instructors, modern European
standards, and new, modern and very pleasant
training facilities.

GALEB
FLYING CLUB
Galeb flying club (Seagull in Serbian) from Belgrade,
Serbia, districts itself from other aviation
clubs and organizations by dedication of its members
to restoration and preserving of vintage aircraft.
During late eighties and mid-nineties, former
Yogoslav Air Force has sold number of still
airworthly aircraft that found their way to international
warbird market. As many as four Galeb G-2s
flew in Galeb flying club at the same time back in
2002. Currently (2010) one Galeb G-2 jet trainer, one piston-engine J-20 Kraguj light attack and
one four-seat Utva 66 airplanes make fleet of Galeb flying club. The club, with its men, women
and aircraft, forms a core of Oldimer aircraft squadron, a project involving the club and Yogoslav
Air Force Museum. Joint idea, purrsued by Galeb flying club and now embraced also by
Museum and Serbian Ministry of Defence, is to restore to flying condition as many as twelve
types of historic aircraft and display them in flight at local and international events. Aircraft
flown by Galeb flying club have been all overhauled and disarmed, fitted with equipment enabling
them to operate by civilian air traffic regulations and registred in Serbian aircraft registry
within special category for oldtimer aircraft. Restored planes sport insignia and camouflage
resembling their authentic look from period of operational use. Pilots and maintenance staff
of Galeb flying club are technicians of former Yogoslav Air Force and today’s Serbian Air Force
and include some of the most renowned names of the Yugoslav aviation history. Thanks to
Galeb flying club and oldtimer aircraft, number of club’s friends and guests - regardless of
their piloting skills, if any - had the opportunity to feel unique flying experience in this type of
aircraft. Galeb flying club members flew on the skies above most of the continents on globe,
while hundreds of thousands of spectators at events in Serbia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Slovakia,
Hungary, Bulgaria, UK, USA and other countries had pleasure of seeing in air and
on the ground airplanes from past times, development of
which shaped the aviation as is known today.

When it comes to aeroplanes, Sigi Angerer is a living legend.
His counterpart for helicopters is Sigi ‘’Blacky’’ Schwarz.
After his training, which the Austrian army paid for, he flew
rescue helicopters in the Alps, among other things. He’s the
only Austrian with a licence for helicopter aerobatics.

Romanian Air Club
Romanian Air Club is a public institution
financed from the state budget,
dealing with theoretical and practical
training and advanced flight
and parachuting, light civil aircraft,
school and sports, to staff its aircraft
and its athletes legitimated.

Bulgarian Air Sport
“Air Sport” Flight Training Organization has been
established in 2003. The activities of the organization
began with training for PPL (SA).
In 2005 the FTO expanded its aviation park with
Cessna 152, Cessna172, Piper Aztec, and also with
integrated training programs.
Year 2011 is a key year for Airsport. Important
decisions for its future development and competitiveness
are made.
Leading are:
• addition and update, as well as gradual renewal,
of the aircraft fleet
• introduction of number of measures aimed at
achieving the lowest costs for particular flights

Vassilis Petinis (balloons and
Governor Trainer & Authorized
Examiner Civil Aviation
Authority) participates with a
balloon which is 3,000 cubic
meters of hot air, basket has
5 persons, 22m height, and a
diameter of 18m., taking on
two banners 32 square meters
each. He deals with the balloon
since 1990 and has taken part
in competitions abroad.

Sightseeing
The Prefecture of Kavala is situated between two
rivers, Strymonas and Nestos, which are a source of
life for the area, while they stand out for their biodiversity
and natural beauty. The peaks of Mount
Paggeo, along with the mountains of Lekani, rise
gloriously to the vastness of the blue sky, sometimes
snow white, sometimes all green. The landscape is
completed with the wild beauty of the jagged coastline
and the light blue sea.

BEACHES
Starting from the west of the
Prefecture, one comes across the
beaches of Ofrynio, Kariani, Sarakina,
Myrtofyto, Eleochori,
and Almyra. Most of them are organized
beaches that offer the visitor
the pleasures of the sea, since
their facilities meet the exigencies
of contemporary times. A little further,
one arrives at Ammolofi (sand
dunes in Greek, the name carries a
literal meaning), one of the most
beautiful beaches in Northern
Greece with crystal – clear shallow
waters. The beach is a real ornament
for the region.
Due to its favourable location by
the sea, Nea Peramos has been
a popular destination for tourists
from neighbouring regions and
urban centres, for many decades
now. Fish taverns serve their delicacies
by the sea. Nea Iraklitsa is
an exquisite fishermen’s village
with lovely waters. Those who have
a boat should not miss the opportunity
to explore the sea caves of
Fidonissi.

While approaching the town of
Kavala, the visitor comes across
the organized beaches of Palio,
Tosca and Batis, which with their
beauty. Besides, there are clean
organized beaches within the
town limits such as Kalamitsa,
Rapsani, and Perigiali.
Further to the east of the prefecture,
the exquisite beauty of
the azure blue waters and of the
golden sand invite visitors for
endless hours of swimming and
diving. Ammoglossa of Keramoti,
where the sand stretches
into the sea for a long distance,
is unique. There, a night swim to
the sound of music coming from
countless coastal clubs and bars
can be an unforgettable experience.

MUSEUM
The Archaeological Museum of Kavala is
located in the centre of Kavala, in «Faliro» Park.
In the museum there are collections of pre-historical
findings and findings of excavations of
Neapolis, Amphipolis e.t.c.

The Municipal Tobacco Museum of Kavala
is a thematic museum, which includes objects
and records about the cultivation and production
of tobacco, its agricultural and commercial
process, industrial tobacco products and exhibition
samples of tobacco.

The Archaeological Museum of Philippi,
is located in the archaelogical site of Philippi.
Its collections include findings from the prehistoric
settlement Dikili Tash, Hellenistic, Roman
and early Christian city of Philippi.

Nea Karvali of Kavala is a continuation of
the old Kapadokian Karvali (Gelveri) with a

long history through the ages. Its glorious
course was marked by the presence of Her
Holy Child, Gregory the Theologian, one
the greatest Fathers of our Church. Since
1981, apart from the agricultural and industrial
development, this course was affected
by the foundation of the Cultural
House of Nea Karvali, which is a continuation
of the first educational organisation
“Nazianzinos” founded in Istanbul by traders
from Kavala in 1884.

THE ANCIENT THEATRE OF PHILIPPI
During your visit to Kavala do not
miss the opportunity to visit the ancient
theatre of Philippi, an important
monument of the region. Its
contemporary form is the result of
successive changes of the buildings,
which represents several stages of the
town’s history.
The theatre lies on the southeastern
slope of the hill where the Acropolis is
situated, in contact to the eastern wall
of the town, where it is also supported.
The older edifice with the Orchestra,
whose diameter counts to 21,60
m, dates back to the time of King
Philipp II (4th century B.C.) After
the Roman colonization
changes took place, accord-

ing to the preferred spectacles
and the aesthetic exigencies of
that period.
In the mid 3rd century A.D. a
last arrangement of the theatre
was attempted, so as to create
ample space for fights with wild
beasts, duels and hunting.
That theatre constitutes an invaluable
heritage for the region
of Eastern Macedonia. Plenty of
elements from that great theatre
are still well preserved.
Since, it has undergone restorations
and it is suitable for
hosting ancient drama performance,
which are integrated in
the summer programmes of Philippi and Thassos Festivals.

Religious Tourism
Kavala was the starting point of Christianity
for Greece and Europe. It was in the
town of Philippi that Apostle Paul delivered
his first sermon in Europe. Besides, it
was also there that the first European- a
young girl from Philippi called Lydia, who
was later declared a saint - was ever baptized.
At the site where the baptismal of
Saint Lydia took place, the local Church
had a church – baptistery built.
The monastery of Panagia Ikossifinissa
(dedicated to Virgin Mary), erected
in the 4th century A.D. by Ossios (Holy)
Germanos, is located on Mount Paggeo.
Above Chryssokastro, the visitor
comes across the imposing Monastery
of Agios (St.) Panteleimonas, in the area
of Paleo Chortokopi the Monastery of
Ypapanti
(Candlemas) and the Monastery of Panagia
Paggeotissa (dedicated to Virgin

Mary) in Neo Chortokopi. Moreover, one can visit the Monastery of Agios (St.) Dimitrios in Nikissiani.
On the other side of the Prefecture, in an area surrounded by Makrychori, Elafochori, Dysvato
and Stegno Villages, lies the Monastery of Metamorfossis (Our Lord’s Transfiguration, also known
as Nikites Monastery). The miraculous icon of Jesus Christ’s Transfiguration is an heirloom brought
by refugees from Asia Minor. Kept in the magnificent church of Nea Karvali dedicated to Agios Grigorios
(St. Gregory), the relics of St. Gregory the Theologian constitute one of the most significant
pilgrimages of the Orthodox Church.
Mud Baths of Krinides
For a visitor of Kavala, the Mud Baths of Krinides that are located in the Municipality of Philippi,
just 3 km away from the Krinides village and very close to the Baptistery of Saint Lydia. Those are
considered the most important mud therapy baths in Greece.

THASOS
Thasos is an island of the Northern Aegean Sea.
Limenas is the island’s capital with beautiful beaches
(Glyfada, Makryammos, Nysteri, Papalimani) and rich archaeological
findings (Dionysus’ Altar, ancient agora) which attract many
visitors. The ancient Theatre of Thasos is impressive. In Limenas, the
Archaeological Museum hosts rich excavation material.
During your walk along the old port, visit Kalogeriko, a magnificent
edifice erected by the monks of Vatopedi Monastery from Mount
Athos.
A wide array of taverns serving excellent food, the intense and varied
nightlife and the magnificent hotels will turn your vacation into
an unforgettable experience.

How to arrive in Thasos:
From Chrysoupoli Airport to the port of Keramoti (about ten minutes away) and then with
frequent hydrofoil itineraries that take you to the island in 30 minutes.
From the town of Kavala there is a regular ferry and shuttle ferry connection for the two
ports of Thasos, Limenas and Prinos.
