RECURRING EVENTS
Belleville Sale & Livestock Auction - Wednesdays – All year
(unless a holiday) in Belleville 717-935-2146
Victory Park Veterans Mural Project We have a
mission. It is to implement a mural in dedication...to those
who responded to the colors. Last year, I was given a stack of
information regarding Victory Park from the Mifflin County
Historical Society. I wanted to learn as much as possible regarding
the park. When & why was it built? Who was it dedicated to? The
reason for the quest for this knowledge was to properly beautify the
park with a fitting mural. Why would we do that? It is our way
to give back to the Juniata River Valley. We have asked you
to sponsor our events, Juniata RiverFEST & the Festival of Ice for
many years now, it is the least we can do for the area and our
military veterans past and present.
From the information I found some great articles from the
Dailey Sentinel. On June 10th, 1919 it was written: “It was the
bravery of these men, and other American boys like them, that
safeguarded our liberty, made possible the freedom we are now
enjoying. Their sacrifices were our gain...” “Our boys stood shoulder
to shoulder... It’s up to us to stand shoulder to shoulder for the boys.”
On September 19th, 1919: “As has ever been the case,
and ever and anon will continue to be the case. Lewistown still has
her ideal. Lewistown is a community with a soul, a pulsating,
vibrating soul, a soul that will carry her ever forward; never
backward and her present ideal is: A FITTING MEMORIAL TO HER
BOYS – THE BOYS THAT WENT TO FRANCE NEVER TO RETURN.
This memorial is to take the form of a Victory Park, which will be
consecrated to the deeds of our living soldiers as well as our
dead...the soldiers and sailors of Mifflin County will get their
memorial and it will not be a lifeless unfeeling thing of granite. It
will be a monument teeming with life, giving joy and fun and
exercise to not only the youngsters and olders of our day but to the
teeming thousands that will come after us. Is there a more sacred
obligation resting on mankind’s shoulders than to provide for
posterity? If there is it is the proving by actual deeds that we are
grateful to the men who fought, bled and died that we might live.”
This mural’s design concept is from the time period when
Victory Park evolved (around 1917) till present day United States
Military events and wars. Victory Park was dedicated on July 4, 1919
in honor of the soldiers and sailors of Mifflin County in the world’s
war 1917-1918. The proposed site is within Victory Park under the
Juniata River Bridge. Lewistown Borough side. It will measure 150
feet by 15 plus feet.
Dwight Kirkland, Black Leaf Studio, LLC, Illustrator, is
our muralist. A lot of research and planning has been put into this
project and the result will be an amazing addition to Victory
Park and our area. Soon it will be nice enough out to start our
initial prepping of the site. If you or your group is interested in
volunteering to help prime and prep the walls please
You know many people who are
struggling – and maybe you are, too – but now
more than ever the United Way of Mifflin-
Juniata needs support. We are deeply
concerned that services will be cut for those
who really need assistance, I see firsthand how changes in the economy have impacted those
most vulnerable in our community – from families simply struggling to pay their rent, to others
who will be lucky to get the next meal on their table…if they have a table.
These comments come with a report that the United Way is looking at a shortfall of
approximately $140,000 with the campaign officially closing on March 15, 2009.
You can help us and you can have coffee for a year in a great Downtown OIP mug….see
the attachment. Please pass this on to someone you know who can help.
Lip Service to Lip
I’ve been called to
serve and I am honored and thrilled
to be among the chosen few. No,
I’m not talking about the military
or a call to the ministry or a call to
a post on Obama’s Cabinet. I am
talking about the panel of judges
at the annual Mifflin-Juniata Special Needs Center 22 nd
Lip Sync Contest.
The panel was made up of five Chamber members:
Carol Smith from the Juniata Sentinel, Marie Mulvihill from
the United Way, Frank Jost from the Lewistown Sentinel,
Eric Lane from WKVA Radio and me.
The emcees were Tina Riden from member Comcast
and Larry Wise, chamber board
member. The Special Needs
Center is also a member.
The event is
exciting and a true
spectacular. It’s
h eld at th e
School auditorium
and sells out to
standing room
only. It is the
best
spent Saturday
evening of the
year for me and my family.
It goes without saying
that I highly recommend it to the entire chamber
membership.
Beth Zong, executive director of the Special Needs
Center, and her entire staff, board and clients work countless
hours bringing the event to us every year. Thank you from
the bottom of my heart. The ten groups we were mandated
to judge were all first place winners. Congratulations to
each and every participant!
Well, they do get an
entire holiday to themselves,
and it's a fun one! St. Patrick's
Day is quite popular in
Pennsylvania - Scranton boasts
that its parade is one of the
largest in the country, and so does Pittsburgh. Stroudsburg
and York are also celebrating with parades, and several
places are offering St. Patrick's Day getaway packages -
Century 21 Above
and Beyond
We would like to
introduce you to the
new and improved
Century 21 covering
M i f f l i n / J u n i a ta /
Perry/Snyder counties. Their new office, located on
Route 35/ Washington Avenue just past The Stop on the
way into Mifflintown, reflects the warm professionalism you
find in each of their 8 trained real estate agents. Owner
Gail Arbogast started in the real
estate business 20+ years ago and
has been committed to the home
buyers and sellers of the area. She
and her staff work hard to make
home buying or selling a stress-free
experience. They accomplish this
by: 1. Being committed to keeping
you informed from beginning to
end throughout the buying/selling
process. 2. Utilizing their
knowledge & experience about local neighborhoods,
schools, market conditions, ordinances, etc. to better serve
your needs. 3. Providing that unique personal touch as they
personally guide you through this exciting process.
Their new name Century 21 Above and Beyond was
chosen for two reasons, the first of which is that they wished
to acknowledge that they could not go “beyond” in their
business without divine help from “above”. That premise
sustained them throughout the challenges of their move
and changes. The second reason is beautifully summed up
in their Vision Statement which reinforces their commitment
to provide real estate services with honesty and integrity
“above and beyond” the expectation of their clients.
Gayle was very quick to say that even though two of her
agents are her sisters; the entire staff considers themselves to
be a close-knit family. She also stated that one thing she
loves about what she does is the fact that every day is a
Real Estate Adventure with no 2 days ever the
same. Gayle grew up in the Mifflintown countryside and
has been a life-long resident. Did you also know the she is
the very proud mother of State Representative Adam
Harris?
They would love to get together and talk about your
home buying / selling plans. They also provide residential
appraising services. Call their office at (800)841-5573 or e-
mail info@c21gbhomes.com. One of their agents would be
happy to set up a time that is easy and convenient for you
to meet. If you’re not ready to meet in person, please tour
The February
“ A f t e r H o u r s ”
networking event was
held at home base, the
historic courthouse,
and was hosted by the
Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau. Over one
hundred of our best friends were in attendance and each had the opportunity to meet
and greet many fellow members.
If you haven’t been to any of our 46 events
over the past four years, we would encourage you to
join us at the Hite Company on March 25 th . This is a
great way to “get connected” to fellow business people
and you will be pleased by the many benefits this
brings to you and your business.
We had two special guests at our event on
February 25 th , Mr. Sean Waddle of the
Alleghenies Tourism Council and Mr. Dwight
Kirkland, Black Leaf Studios, the muralist who will
be doing our mural in Victory Park Veterans Mural.
Sean explained the many benefits tourism in
the Juniata River Valley will receive. The focus of
attention will be hiking, bicycling, ATV/dirt biking, boating, motor touring, fishing, bird
watching and winter sports. What a perfect match to our region. Over the course of
the next three years we will be merging our features into the brochures and website maps
of the Alleghenies region. Dwight is an experienced muralist and recently did the
Waterfront billboard along route 322 at the Walnut Street/Route 522 exit. He is our
muralist for the Victory Park Veterans Mural that will be done Spring/Summer 2009.
The food at this event was from the catering menu of the Giant Food Store, a
long time member. We are blessed with many highly recommended caterers
listed on our membership directory. Be sure to check out our newly launched
website at www.juniatarivervalley.org. The site is a joint chamber and visitors bureau
Always Mom’s Little
Kid It was February 1993
and I was very much in the shoe business. Not only did I operate
Tom Johnson Shoe Store on East Market Street in downtown
Lewistown, but I was leasing space in the downtown State College
Danks store and in a very creative Danks ladies specialty shop in
Indiana, Pennsylvania. It was convenient to oversee the State
College shoe department; however, Indiana was a project
demanding much more attention.
We were in our third year in Indiana and winter time
was a challenge. It came early and lasted late and every trip
included the scenic drive over Cresson Mountain. Business was less
than profitable and a weekly visit was a necessity. Managers
were hard to maintain and sales help impossible. I was waiting
out the lease that expired at the end of 1994 to close the shoe
department. For the duration I needed to pay close attention to
my investment.
Planning my weekly trip I decided to take an alternate
route to include a visit to Punxsutawney (Groundhog Day movie
location) and on for a weekend in Kane with Mom. As I left
Indiana I made my usual stop at the Sunoco station, filled up,
moved away from the pumps and unfolded my AAA
Pennsylvania road map. It took me several minutes to decide on
just what roadways to take to see Punxsy and end up in Kane. I
wrote down my plan and pulled out as snow was piling up
everywhere. Remember, this was before GPS and cell phones.
Four hours later I arrived in Kane at Mom’s house; worn
out, hungry and grumpy. Immediately, as I pulled in, she came
running out to the car. “What have you done?” “The State Police at the Indiana barracks must talk to you the minute you
arrive!” “What in the world have you done?” I had nothing. What could they want with me? How in the world did they
know where I was going? Where did they get Mom’s phone number?
I quickly called the officer. “Did you forget to do something at the Sunoco station in Indiana?” “No, I don’t think
so. I get gas their every week and put it on my Sunoco card.” It seems the attendant at the station reported me for gas theft.
The state police traced the plate number. The car was registered to Tom Johnson Shoes in Lewistown. They called the store to
find out that I would be ending up at Mom’s house in Kane. They requested the phone number and called Mom. The Sunoco
station allowed me till 5:00 P.M. to pay for the gas or they would press charges. I had one hour. Not enough time to drive
back to Indiana. I called the Indiana store and sent the manager out to the station to pay the bill. Sunoco was satisfied. The
Pennsylvania State Police were satisfied. My record was clean. Now all I had to do was deal with Mom. How did I fail to
walk over to the attendant’s window and present my Sunoco Gas Card for payment?
I immediately became 13 years old as I attempted to explain my dilemma to Mom. She just could not
understand how I could not remember to pay for the gas. I pondered the facts for many months thereafter. I wondered if I
had messed up in other situations. Would I be hearing from authorities elsewhere? Was I on the “most wanted list”? Would
Mom ever allow me to forget this visit? Was I destined to be 13 forever?
I retired the gas card, closed the store a year later and Mom passed away a year after that. Case closed. Now I have
a thirteen year old daughter and I can assure you I shall make it my life’s mission to keep her thirteen years old forever
and forever. It’s my family legacy. It is my parental duty! After all, Mom kept me at age 13 for 37 years.
