Dear NEWSS members,
I would like to introduce myself as your current Public
Relations Coordinator for the North Eastern Weed Science
Society. My name is José Javier Vargas Almodóvar (Javi), I am
honored to have been given this opportunity and am eager to
start working with the NEWSS executive board, students and
society members.
As most of you know I currently work at the University of
Tennessee in Knoxville, TN under the tutelage of Dr. Gregory
R. Armel in the Horticultural and Invasive Weed Management
program. The program has exposed me to multiple experiences
and perspectives which have helped me learn how to best meet
the needs and duties of research, but also provided me with a
professional development to interact with students, staff, and
weed science colleagues. My particular weed science research interests have spanned both applied and basic
research in the understanding of herbicide physiology and new integrated pest management strategies for control
of invasive weeds and in novel weed management in vegetables, tree fruit, small fruit, ornamentals, and in noncrop
areas.
Throughout the years I've been a participant in several weed science societies; however, it was here at the
NEWSS where I will trace my weed science roots.
I would like to thank Barbara Scott for all the help she has provided me to understand my duties as Public
Relations Coordinator. I look forward an opportunity to meet you all through the years and provide you with
NEWSS updates, news, details of society activities and meetings.
Please don't be a surprise if you may also see me photographing you at all NEWSS activities during the next few
years. Please feel free to say hello! and have a chat, I am eager to hear from you.
It is my pleasure to join this outstanding Weed Science Society and learning community!
I look forward to getting to know you in order to best serve our NEWSS society.
