AN ANALOGUE JOURNEY
I WANT TO BREAK FREE! I WANT TO SEE
PLACES - WANT TO TAKE PHOTOS. I HAVE
WRAPPED UP 6 CAMERAS AND 60 FILMS,
I HAVE CHUCKED MY JOB! I DRIVE OFF. ONE
MONTH ACROSS GERMANY. WHY GERMANY?
BECAUSE YOU OFTEN WANT TO SEE THE
WORLD AND ON THE OTHER HAND DONT
EVEN KNOW YOUR OWN COUNTRY. 3500 KM,
SPENDING THE NIGHTS IN YOUTH HOSTELS.
From lomo to Schneider-Kreuznach. From 0 up to 3000 metres.
From the fish market to the beer garden. All across germany.
With 35mm, medium format and large format cameras.
In the luggage well stowed away 60 films are waiting for the light
of the world to see.
TYRE PRESSURE CHECKED - OFF IT GOES!

AN ANALOGUE JOURNEY
WHY?
Because the time has come. Because I was waiting for a long time to get out from
that old nine to five and for to see my whole country. But first of all to take photos!
And I am able to do this when travelling all alone. None must wait for me when climbing
up a hill with a big and heavy camera comes to my mind. I cant and wont expect
that from anybody.
Germany - a photographers dream?
Of course many dream about the wide and wild sceneries of New Zealand or Africa.
However also Germany offers many unique motives you can find nowhere else in the
world. UNESCO gave nearly 40 of them the title World cultural heritage for a reason.
I am curious.
And because right now, after 10 years in the advertisement industry I am going to
break a new path - its now or never!

AN ANALOGUE JOURNEY
THE ROUTE:
My route is oriented roughly to the UNESCO world cultural
heritage sites in germany. Started with Bremen in the north it
goes by the Teutoburger Wald to Cologne. Again out of the
city along the Rhine to Koblenz. Over Trier, along the Saar - a
short excursion to France then the Rhine Falls to see that river
again...., however ... I dont want to reveal everything yet!
To summarise the most important points:
THE CAMERAS:
„Have you bought another camera again?“ Certainly many have heard ings like this.
And thus many photographic apparatuses gather with the time in my cupboards.
However, I want to collect nothing what I do not use! And therefore these following
darlings will come with me on my big journey:
• Canon EOS 30V
• Leicaflex SL
• Hasselblad 500 c/m
• Mamiya RB67
• TOYO VIEW 45G
... and simply because it was never more easy and cheaper
to take funny panoramic pictures:
LAICAFLEX SL
This camera reminds me of the SLR camera I started with taking
photos, the Canon FTB. Except the Laicaflex is heavier and
seems to be built at last forever.
You wont find an automatic helpers on this camera.
And that is fine. BACK TO THE ROOTS!
CANON EOS 30V
My second 35mm SLR is the complete opposite to the
Laicaflex SL. This camera is state of the art. At least in the
range of the analogue EOS cameras. It was the last model
that Canon produced. For me the 30 V with its many features
like the ocular-controlled autofocus is the ideal companion if
you want to take photos fast and spontaneously.
HASSELBLAD 500 C/M
What do I have to say about this legend? Generations of
photographers have worked with this camera.
One evening i stood in the Hamburg Hafencity with a large
format camera. I got into a conversation and an older photographer
told me about his cameras from the „good old times“.
To cut a long story short ... one week later it was mine!
MAMIYA RB 67
This camera monster is neither extraordinary beautyful nor
especially practical. But thats exactly what i love about this big
big toy. I always got the feeling a good photo with this camera
has to be work. And this makes the picture, at least for me,
even more valuable.
TOYO VIEW 45G
Why would anybody take something that heavy and big camera
on a trip? Because he is crazy and want to take a camera especially
for architecture with boundless adjusting possibilities!
Because the prices for colour sheet film are quite high I will also
use a roll film back in the format 6x9. I‘m looking forward to
disappear under the black cloth again!
LOMO SPINNER 360
Absolute toy! But the best camera to take 360 panoramic
photos except stitching single frames or a very expensive
special camera.
You can choose between two pinhole apertures, f8 and f16.
The camera is thought for ISO 400 films. Simply hold the
spinner up in the air, drag the ring, let it go and the photo is
finished.
- 8 pictures on a standart 35mm film
- Manual long time exposure
DIE ÜBERNACHTUNGEN:
Who has already made a 30-day vacation? This could become expensive!
Therefore, I have resolved in addition to choose a kind of the accommodation which
are convincing with more than 500 locations in whole Germany, fair prices and a very
high-class standard: Youth hostels!
I have performed, as an old pacifist, my alternative service in a youth hostel. So I know
to not missunderstand the word youth in youthhostel. Travellers at every age can find
a nice place for the night.
Who is once a member (approx. 30€. in the year) an overnight stay with breakfast
costs about 25€.
I had no problem to find the suitable hostels because all along my route really everywhere
a hostel is in the immediate surroundings. And of course I will call in on my
tour also in „my“ old youth-hostel... already determines 11 years .... I become old!

AN ANALOGUE JOURNEY
ME:
I am Matthias Bittner. I live in my hometown Hamburg and I am 30 years old. The
last ten years I worked as a graphic designer and art-director in the advertisement
industry. There is always something to photograph when working on ads that I came
in touch with photography. I was on fire when i get my handy on daddys old SLR
camera. Working with it means to think and adjust all the time. And in a magic kind
of way a picture landed on film - fascinating! I love it to experiment with different
cameras and films enjoy the slow working process in the contrast to the fast and busy
digital world.
Since that I used every camera i can get my hands on and I was able to use those
experiences for a lot of shooting in my former job.
Now it is time to take all of that knowledge and bring it to the mother of all photo tours.
