message from our ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
As we approach the 2010 spring baseball season, we
are reminded of the rich tradition and history of Panther
Baseball. The history in baseball at Greenville College
has been filled with success on the field as well as off the field. Many
lessons have been learned through baseball that have impacted
students’ lives for eternity. For that reason alone we are thankful for
Dr. Doug Faulkner
the significant role our baseball program has played in students’ lives.
As we remember the history, we also look forward to the future
and great things ahead for the tool of baseball to be used in the
development of young men. Our head coach, Lynn Carlson,
gives us many reasons to be optimistic about the 65 th season of
Panther Baseball and beyond. We hope you will enjoy watching
and supporting Panther Baseball as it strives to fulfill the Mission of
Greenville College on and off the field.
spring 2010 SEASON OUTLOOK
The 2010 Greenville College Panther
Baseball team will have a very
different look to them. After losing
7 players to graduation including
5 starters, the Panthers have no
choice but to turn the page. Fortunately, the
recruiting class for the fall of 2009 mixed with the
development of some younger players should
combine with the returning core to produce a
capable team for 2010.
The biggest losses for the Panthers will be starters
Mike Scott, Zach Miller, Brian Stoff offensively
as well as Andy Rincker on the mound. Along
with that could be the loss of Bryan Hobbie, who
was a 2nd team all-conference outfielder last
season. There is an outside chance, because of
remaining eligibility, he may return to the Panthers
for one more season. Other graduated seniors
who were big contributors were Heath Erwin on
the mound and Carter Burford behind the plate.
All of them leave big shoes to fill. In addition to
the senior departures, the Panthers also lose
starting shortstop, Ross Cook, and third baseman,
Mike O’Hara who are both concentrating on their
academics. That leaves no less than 5 positions
on the field that will be assumed by new starters
this spring.
The Panthers return a core of good players that
should help solidify the team on both offense and
defense. Returning at 2nd base will be Honorable
Mention All-Conference player, junior Kyle Hobar
(.320 avg, 9 sb). Also returning will be senior
backstop Brian Deadmond, (.328 avg.), who led
the conference in throwing out base-stealers last
spring. The biggest boost for the Panthers this
spring on offense will come from 5th year senior,
Stefan Neece, who is coming off Tommy John
Surgery and a medical redshirt season. Stefan is
a 3-time All-Conference player for the Panthers
and an experienced 1st baseman. He currently
ranks in the top 10 career statistics in Home Runs,
Doubles, Hits, RBI’s, Total Bases, Batting Average,
and Walks for the Panthers.
Joining the trio of returning starters will be several
Panthers who made significant contributions last
season in more limited roles. Returning junior
Justin Hubbard hit .345 in 20 starts at 3rd base
and designated hitter. Also a junior, Daniel Covert
hit .306 while playing the outfield and designated
hitter. Other returning hitters who will be counted
on for offense this spring will be junior Wes Letizia,
and sophomore Ryan Siddle.
The returning pitchers for the Panthers include
several starters and others who will contribute out
4
2010 GREENVILLE COLLEGE BASEBALL | www.gcpanthers.com
of the bullpen. Matt Leefers is a 4-year starter
for the Panthers and has dominated opponents
at times. We look for more consistency from
Matt this season. Eric Heiden played a big role
on the staff last spring with several quality spotstarts
against some of the best opponents on the
schedule. Daniel Covert showed
some continued
growth during his
sophomore campaign finishing 2nd in the
team in wins and 3rd in strikeouts. Both
Eric and Daniel will have a chance to start
some games this spring. Out of the bullpen, two
returners will help to keep the Panthers in games
and nail down victories. Justin Hubbard and Wes
Letizia continue their development and both have
the pitches to dominate in relief.
The class of new players for the Panthers should
have several legitimate contributors in the group.
Beginning on the mound, the Panthers have a
group of 7 new pitchers that should be able to
replace the pitchers that graduated last spring
and add quality arms to our pitching staff. Junior
David Massengill is a transfer student from
Lakeland College. He is from Neoga, Illinois and
should contribute both in the outfield and on the
mound as well. Also joining the team this spring
is sophomore Derrick Hudnut, who spent last
spring getting himself eligible for this year after
transferring in from Southwestern Illinois College
in Belleville. Several freshman will compete for
innings on the mound as well. Kye Winter has
the potential to start ballgames as well as Derek
Reckmann. Also competing for innings will be
Cole Lawson, Kyle Boldt, and Scott Voyles. Each
of them has the potential to be valuable members
of the pitching staff.
With 5 position players graduating, many of the
new players will vie for starting and contributing
roles this spring. On the infield, 5 new middle
infielders bring depth, versatility, and athleticism
to the team. Ben Brown, Travis Hawkins will push
returning 2nd baseman Kyle Hobar. At shortstop
where a position is available, Juan Mondragon,
Scott Voyles, and Kye Winter will all likely see
some innings in the spring. At third base, Kenny
Trager will compete with returners Justin Hubbard
and Ryan Siddle for playing time.
Behind the plate Adam Wallace will work under
senior Brian Deadmond to improve and develop
into the quality college catcher he is capable of
becoming. Returning to the outfield will be junior
Daniel Covert, who played some right
field last season. He will be joined
in the outfield by some new faces. New players
competing for positions will include junior transfer
David Massengill, sophomore transfer Andrew Pihl,
and freshmen Cole Lawson, Scott Voyles, and
Juan Mondragon.
The Panthers have high hopes for the Spring of
2010. The team will strive to live out the Panther
Baseball Covenants on and off the field and trust
the Lord for the rest. We hope you will join the
Panthers in their quest to compete with character.
We appreciate your support. Go Panthers!!!!
Matt is a senior from
Coffeen, Illinois.
He is a 4th year
returning starter who, while showing
improvement in his skills last spring,
didn’t improve his statistics. This
spring he will be relied upon for a lot
starts and innings. Matt is a frontend
rotation starter for the Panthers
and is poised for a great senior
campaign. He is the son of Tina and
Jim Leefers.
Scott Voyles | Fr - IF / P | R / R
Scott is a freshman
from Wayne City,
Illinois. Because
of his good feet and strong arm,
Scott has a chance to be a very
good college baseball player. He
will need to add some strength and
refine his skills, but the Panthers are
encouraged about his future in the
program. He is the son of LeAnn
Scott and the grandson of Kathy and
Tom Voyles.
5
Kyle is a junior
from Germantown,
Tennessee. He put
together a very nice sophomore
season playing primarily 2nd base
and earning Honorable Mention
All-Conference honors. Kyle is a
very good defensive 2nd baseman
with great footwork and an above
average arm. He will also be one of
the major catalysts for the Panther
offense. He is the son of Linda and
Ron Hobar.
Adam Wallace | Fr - C | R / R
6
Adam is a freshman
catcher from
Shipman, Illinois
where he played baseball for Brian
Hanslow. Adam has the tools to be
an excellent college catcher. He is
a hard worker and a tough-minded
competitor. Adam will likely play
a backup role for the Panthers
this spring giving the team some
valuable innings and gaining vital
experience. He is the son of Tonya
and Kevin Wallace.
David Massengill | Jr - OF / P | R / R
Lakers. He has the potential to be a
very good Division III pitcher. He will
be counted on for major innings this
spring, but will likely see some time
in the outfield as well where he can
run balls down with his athleticism.
Brian is senior
catcher from Odin,
Illinois. He is a
2-year returning starter behind the
plate for the Panthers coming off
an excellent 2nd half of the season
last spring. We look for Brian to
get off to a great start this spring
and demonstrate all that he is
capable of at the plate and on the
defensive side of the ball as well.
He is the son of Janna and Vernon
Deadmond.
Cole Lawson | Fr - OF | R / R
12
Cole is a freshman
outfielder and pitcher
for the Panthers.
Cole is a good outfielder who can
cover ground well in the field. He
also exhibits a strong-throwing arm
that he utilizes on the mound as
well as in the field. Cole could be a
very good college player as he gains
strength and experience. He is the
son of Stacey and Rich Lawson.
Juan Mondragon | Fr - IF | R / R
13
Juan is a freshman
a strong athletic build which allows
him to play shortstop, but also a
few other positions on the field. He
will likely be called upon to help in
several spots on the field for the
Panthers this spring. He is the son
of Rosa and Eugenio Mondragon.
Ben Brown | Fr - IF | R / R
14
Ben is a freshman
2nd baseman from
Pekin, Illinois. Ben
has a great mind for the game
and great desire to get better. He
showed very good footwork in the
fall and the ability to hit the ball all
over the field. We look forward to
watching Ben develop in the Panther
Baseball program. He is the son of
Jan and Mike Brown.
Travis Hawkins | Fr - IF | R / R
16
Travis is a freshman
infielder from
Kirkwood, Missouri.
He spent most of the fall at 2nd
base, but may be asked to move
around the field a bit more this
spring. Travis has the mental and
physical capacity to do that well.
Travis is a good team player with
a great competitive spirit. We look
forward to seeing him grow this
spring. He is the son of Lyn and Kirk
Hawkins.
Ryan Siddle | So - IF | L / R
20
Ryan is a freshman
infielder from
summer. We hope he will recover
quickly enough to help the Panthers
this spring. Last season Ryan was
one of the most improved players on
the team. He is the son of Cynthia
and Ron Siddle.
Kye Winter | Fr - IF / P | R / R
23
Kye is a freshman
is a very good athlete and will likely
play shortstop and pitch for the
Panthers this spring. He has a very
strong arm as well as good hands
and footwork. Kye may play several
positions for the Panthers this
spring. He will also be an important
contributor offensively. He is the
son of Shawn Robbins and Kim and
Rodney Winter.
Bryan Hobbie | Sr - OF | R / R
24
Bryan is a 5th year
senior from Vandalia,
off a solid season where he was
voted to the all-conference 2nd
team, while hitting in the middle
of the order. Bryan’s athleticism
makes him an excellent defensive
player and his speed makes him a
threat every time he reaches base.
We look for even better things from
Bryan this spring. He is the son
Debbie and Glen Hobbie.
Derek Reckmann | Fr - P | R / R
27
Derek is a freshman
from nearby
Alhambra, Illinois
where he played his baseball for
Joel Hawkins at Highland High
School. Derek is a tall, long, righthanded
pitcher with a good feel on
the mound. He projects well as a
Division III pitcher and the Panthers
have high hopes for him even this
season. Derek is the son of Kim and
Jerry Reckmann.
Kyle Boldt | Fr - IF / P | R / R
33
Kyle is a righthanded
pitcher from
Woodlawn High
School where he played for GC
Panther alumnus, Lance Boldt. Kyle
has a solid frame for a freshman and
a good understanding on the mound.
Kyle will need to log some quality
innings this spring for the Panthers
be as good as they can be. He is
the son of Sharon and Jerry Boldt.
Daniel Covert | Jr - OF / P | L / R
36
Daniel is a junior
pitcher and
outfielder. Last
season Daniel was 3rd in innings
pitched and 3rd in strikeouts for
the Panthers. He also ended the
season as the Panthers designated
hitter hitting .306 for the season.
The Panthers look for more from him
offensively and also defensively in
the outfield this coming spring. He
should still remain an important part
of the pitching staff as well. Daniel
is the son of Katrina and Darin
Covert.
Wes is a junior 1st
from Neoga, Illinois.
He has a very strong throwing arm
and good footwork around the
bag. The Panthers look for Wes
to compete at the designated hitter
position and possibly push for some
innings in the outfield this spring. He
should help bolster the pitching staff
out of the bullpen as well. He is the
son of Maureen and John Letizia.
Eric Heiden | Jr - P | L / L
41
Eric is a junior
left-handed pitcher
from Altamont,
Illinois. He threw some valuable
innings for the Panthers last season
starting 6 games and coming out
of the bullpen in 4 others. He will
once again compete for innings as a
starter and reliever this spring. We
believe Eric will continue to develop
as he was one of the most improved
players last spring. He is the son of
Justin Hubbard | Jr - IF | R / R
44
Justin is a junior 3rd
baseman and pitcher
for the Panthers.
Last season he was a part-time
starter at 3rd base and designated
hitter. This year he will compete for
a starting position at both positions
and also contribute some innings
out of the bullpen. Look for Justin to
continue to improve and contribute
significantly to the Panthers success
this spring. He is the son of Connie
and Michael Hubbard.
Stefan Neece | Sr - IF | L / R
45
Stefan is a 5th year
senior coming off
of Tommy John
surgery last winter. He is a 3-time
all-conference player and sits in the
top 10 in several career offensive
categories in the Greenville College
baseball program. A 3-year team
captain, Stefan provides great
leadership through his hard-work
and selfless humble attitude. He is
the son of Marleen and
Brad Neece.
