Welcome to the Department of Bioengineering and the BIG (Bioengineering Interdepartmental Graduate)
Program!
The Department of Bioengineering, established in 2006, is the fasting growing department at the Bourns
College of Engineering and is chaired by Professor Victor G.J. Rodgers The research vision is to build strength
from experts in biochemistry, biophysics, biology, and engineering to focus on critical themes that impact
bioengineering.
The mission of the new Department of Bioengineering at the University of California, Riverside focuses on
two interrelated themes:
1. Advancing Bioengineering research, and,
2. Preparing future leadership in Bioengineering and related fields.
Our unique interdisciplinary program combines building a solid fundamental foundation in biological science
and engineering, developing diverse communication skills and providing training in the most advanced
quantitative bioengineering research. The result is a rigorous, but exceptionally interactive and welcoming
educational training for Bioengineering students leading towards B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
BIG is the umbrella for graduate level research effort associated with the faculty in the Department of
Bioengineering as well as other Participating Faculty at UCR who have a passion for training graduate
students in bioengineering. BIG offers a rigorous but exceptionally interactive and welcoming educational
environment. BIG , offers graduate study leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
