This is a work in progress and is known to be incomplete and it probably has some errors. Please
use it accordingly. Generations seven thru nine were removed in an effort to protect the privacy of
the living.

Carolina, buried: Lewisville, Forsyth Co., NC. William died Nov 8 1811, Winston Salem, Stokes
Co., NC, buried: Lewisville, Forsyth Co., NC.
William bought land at the end of 1787 in NC. There was a William Alford on the tax list of
Montgomery County, Virginia- not far from what was then Stokes County, NC. Witnesses for land
deeds for William and Mary were Thomas and Elizabeth Alford but the connection, if any, is not
known. William's will and Mary's petition for dower rights show they had 10 children.
Buried Old cemetery of Shiloh Evangelical Lutheran Church. Died near the place cited.
Most of the data pertaining to the children came from a variety of sources - cited when known.
Mary: Some early records show Mary with maiden name of "Warren" but that has proven to be an
error.

John: In the 1800 census John Ashley is living near William Alford. The Ashley's moved to
Monroe County in western Virginia about 1801 and then to Kanawha Valley about 1811. The last
known record of John Wiley Ashley is the 1860 Roane Co. WV census when he was living with the
William Hammack family.

It is probable that Annie does not belong in this family or we have something else
wrong. The record is being left here to provide us a jumping off place to resolve the
matter and because if removed from this family would be lost in space. (disk space)
The following was sent by Kent Irvin (KLI) AAFA #1023. "Annie Alford married John
Fyffe 1829 Wilkes County, NC - If William Alford was living in Tennessee in 1829, it
would have been unlikely that his daughter would have been married in North Carolina.
I know that the marriage laws of Tennesse required the bride to be a resident of the
county where the marriage license was issued. I have copies of several different
marriage licenses from different counties in Tennessee in the 1800's, and they all state
that the license is void if the bride is not an actual resident of the county. Presumably
this was a precaution to protect the women involved. North Carolina laws may have
been similar. I have seen several examples of men (who needed no special protection)
getting married in states where they were not residents, but in all cases they had
connection in the place where the license was issued. Either they were marrying a
woman who had previously been their neighbor, or they had an aunt or uncle living in
the county with whom thay may have stayed. I believe that Annie Fyffe was not
William Alford's daughter, or there was more than one William Alford, but it is
possible that my conclusions about William Alford are wrong.

Most of the information on this person and his descendants came from Mrs. Jack Milton (Jacqueline
Reimer) Alford. Some via a family group record sent to the late Mrs. Tressie Bowman.
Leander was shown as born in Kentucky in the 1850 census but in 1860 and in 1870 he showed
North Carolina as his place of birth.
An undated, but seemingly very old, note from what appears to be "Ben's Niece Mrs. Odie Coats" at
an address that is not legible. "Leander H. Alford was an early day Minister, organized a Church
near his home which was located near the center of what early day maps list as the -- Alford
Township -- this covered a large area. Both Leander H. Alford and his wife are buried in a private
cemetery on their farm--which was located on his original land grant.
Other descendants of L. H. Alford are buried in this private cemetery, both he and his wife lived to
quite elderly. He has grandchildren living today that are in their middle and lalte 80's. The parents
of Leander H. Alford moved from North Carolina sometime before 1840. One of Leander's
daughters moved to Delta Co., Texas after marriage--she and her husband settling east of Pecan
Gap--in the then Giles Community about 1885."
In both 1850 and 1860 Arkansas Census he and his family was enumerated in Hot Springs County.
In 1860 the township was shown as Prairie and the Post Office as De Roche. These were townships
adjoining Alford Township. In 1860 the AAFA census extract shows the spelling as Olford.
Leander had property valued at $1,300 in 1860 and Nancy listed herself as a "weaver."
Throughout this genealogy of the descendants of Leander Alford burial places may be shown as the
Social Hill Cemetery or the Adkins Memorial Methodist Church Cemetery. They are the same with
the latter being the most recent name. It is located in Lone Hill Township.
