$2000, Jane 46 GA, Jefferson 14 GA, Mary Ann 26 GA, Jane 12 GA, and Susan 10 GA. The three
daughters should be the same as tabulated in 1840 but four of the sons are deceased or moved.
(Three were enumerated in their own homes in 1850)

One thing I found when at GDAH was a published 1860 Carroll Co. GA census. The Alford
extractions were identical to what we had but I thought I should look at who was living around
Jeptha and kin that year. Sure enough, two of the daughters mentioned in his will are living
immediately next to other Alford kin:
Page 375, House 188/Family 187 (immediately before Richard Alford) J. S. Phillips 29 M GA

Page 376, House 198/Family 197 (immediately after Wash Alford and two away from Jeptha---one
between this and Jeptha was Sol Williams, probably former brother-in-law of Nancy, wife of Jeptha)

George W. 3 months GA
These are Jacob Phillips and Thomas Jones, sons-in-law of Jeptha mentioned in his will. Jacob
Phillips was the executor of his will. Kirby Lyle and William Lyle, two of the three witnesses to the

will were also close neighbors. William Scoggins (age 80, b. NC) also living nearby may have been
the father? of his 1st wife.

Jane: According to LDS records I find where Allen Scroggins born GA. abt 1788 died Bef 1820
married Nancy J. (Jane ?) Scoggins on 16 Jun 1810 Ky. Nancy's parents were Jonah Scoggins and
Anna Hightower. Since Allen Scroggins died before 1820 this would make her available to Jeptha
to marry in 1820. The only thing that detracts from that is it shows Nancy born in GA 10Feb1792
and we show her birth abt 1804. Interesting. --Joel Alford via email 12/14/02
Assume she died before Jeptha's 2nd marriage.

What proof do we have that Jane's name was Piper. "Family tradition" says it is so but there is no
marriage record to support it. If James R. married in 1840 and had a child where were they in the
1840 census? There is a record of George W. Alford and Jane Piper marriage in Troup Co in 1839.
In 1840 Troup Co., GA there was a George W. Alford with no family other than a wife - they were
very young - age 15-20 and probably the couple who married the year before. While it is possible
that George W. and James Richard are one and the same person in the marriage/census records it
seems improbable. We are delisting "Piper" as the wife until some proof is provided.

An earlier problem that I find also exists with a George Washington in this family. I think I have
mentioned this before and I think we need to investigate the possibilities--Were two different Troup
Co. GA marriages combined in the published records? Did James Richard really marry someone
other than Jane Piper (do we have proof that that was his wife's name?), or exactly what is the
problem with the Troup Co. marriage records as compared with our genealogy: From Troup Co. GA
Marriages-- George Washington Alford married Jane Piper, Sept. 26, 1839 In the 1840 Troup Co.
census, there are only two Alfords on page 326, 697th Dist. and these are George W. (he age15-20
with female 15-20), and Jepthah (5 sons and 3 daughers as well as a wife). We do not have a
George Washington listed as a son of Jeptha.
We have that Richard Alford married Jane Piper but no date. The children living in Richard's
household in 1850 definitely indicate a marriage date of c1839 as the eldest son Welborn/Wilburn is
10 years old (born 1840). Washington is 7 so was born 1843. What happened to George

Washington who is next to Jeptha in 1840? Could it be that he died and Jane married George's
brother, James Richard and they either named their first son George Washington (meaning Wilburn
was the son of George W. and Jane) or maybe Jane was expecting George Washington Jr. when his
real father died and then Richard married her? He is only shown as Richard in the census. Where
did the James come from? Also how do we know that William Gabriel had that first name? He
married Mary Driver in 1858 according to our marriage records, yet in 1850 he has a wife named
Mary with three children under 5? WHY IS WILLIAM GABRIEL NOT MENTIONED IN HIS
FATHER'S WILL? His marriage to Mary Driver is not in the Carroll Co. published marriages either,
but was given to us by Vachel Driver.
We have that Mary Ann Alford married William Wright Driver in 1834, Pike Co. but she is living at
home as Mary Ann Alford (age 26) in the 1850 Carroll Co. census and in that same census William
Wright Driver and his first wife Tabitha are enumerated elsewhere in Carroll Co. with 6 children.
Tabitha supposedly died after their 8th child and then he married Mary Ann (I suppose before 1860).
That marriage is also missing from our list because we have it as 1834 Pike Co. and the source as
Vachel Driver. In the FGS attached to info he sent Gil, the date of the marriage is given as 1850-
1851.
Where did the info come from that all of Clarence Juhan's brothers were killed in the Civil War?
What do you have to support this?
Those possibly from this family that I have record of that were killed in the Civil War, died soon
after, or filed for pensions (from INDEX TO GA CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE PENSION FILES)
only include one person: Thomas (Lucinda, widow of Thomas of Co. B, 56th GA, of Carroll Co.)--
IS THIS THE THOMAS ALFORD IN RANDOLPH CO. AL IN 1860? If so, he was born 1827 and
if Jeptha's son, his age in 1850 is at least 10 years off (but the ages are not in correct birth order so
maybe it was??).
I will search through the rosters I have and see who else might fit.
This is surely enough for now.

I, Richard Alford, of said State and County, being of sound and disposing mind and memory, do
make this my last will and testament. First I give bequeath and devise to Alice M. Alford (my
daughter in law) the following property, to wit: Fifty acres in the North west corner of lot of land
number Two hundred and twenty one (221) in the 11th District and State and County, to have and to
hold, during her entire with C J Alford or in the event of his death then during her widowhood or if
she dies without leaving any heirs of her body with C J Alford then this land to revert to my nearest
legal heirs but if any heirs be left to them at the death this estate to go to them at the death of A M
Alford then to C J Alford if in life and to the heirs of his body if any - if not to revert as stated
above.

removed. Why was he not mentioned in Jeptha's will if he was a son? Could Gabriel and Guthridge
be the same person? The marriage data we have for the latter does not fit.

in South Carolina. He served in Co. F., 19th Georgia Infantry, CSA. He was wounded and
captured. His family moved from Alabama to Chickasaw County, MS in 1879. Notwithstanding the
dates shown the 1860 census shows George and Frances- ages 17 and 16 living together. Theirs was
the only Alford family enumerated in 1870 Marion County, AL with Mary 9, Martha 6, J (male) 4
and W.W. (male) 1.
In his CSA military records he was listed as Washington Alford, G. W., and J. W.,
