carelessness.<br />

One miner's laborer killed by falling into sump through his own<br />

carelessness.<br />

One miner's laborer killed, struck by piece of rock, the accident<br />

was unavoidable.<br />

Two miners' laborers killed, struck by piece of coal, the accidents<br />

were unavoidable.<br />

One miner's laborer killed, struck by timber, the accident was<br />

unavoidable.<br />

One miner's laborer killed by a rush of water from culm pipe<br />

through his own carelessness.<br />

The total number of miners' laborers killed was 143, of whom<br />

76 or 53.14 per cent, were due to the carelessness or ignorance of<br />

the victims, 20 or 13.98 per cent, to the carelessness of others, 43<br />

or 30.08 per cent, were unavoidable and 4 or 2.80 per cent, responsibility<br />

not denned.<br />

Forty drivers and runners were killed. Of this number 20 or<br />

50.00 per cent, were killed by cars on gangway; 2 or 5.00 per cent,<br />

by cars in tunnel; 3 or 7.50 per cent, by cars on slopes; 1 or 2.50<br />

per cent, by cars on plane; 1 or 2.50 per cent, by cars at foot of<br />

shaft; 1 or 2.50 per cent, by fall at face of workings; 5 or 12.50 per<br />

cent, by explosions of gas in chambers; 1 or 2.50 per cent, by explosions<br />

of gas in old workings; 2 or 5.00 per cent, by explosions of<br />

blasts; 1 or 2.50 per cent, by rush of coal in chute; 1 or 2.50 per<br />

cent, by being kicked by a mule ; 1 or 2.50 per cent, by being scalded<br />

in sump and 1 or 2.50 per cent, by falling into slope. Of the 40<br />

fatalities, 24 or 00.00 per cent, were due to the carelessness or ignorance<br />

of the victims, 1 or 2.50 per cent, to the carelessness of<br />

others, 10 or 25.00 per cent, were unavoidable and 5 or 12.50 per<br />

cent, responsibility not defined.<br />

Eight company men were killed. Of this number 2 or 25.00 per<br />

cent, were killed by falls on gangway while timbering and repairing;<br />

2 or 25.00 per cent, were killed by cars on gangway; 1 or 12.50<br />

per cent, by electricity; 1 or 12.50 per cent, by falling down shaft;<br />

1 or 12.50 per cent, by falling down chute and 1 or 12.50 per cent,<br />

by being struck by timber. Of the 8 fatalities, 7 or 87.50 per cent,<br />

were due to the carelessness or ignorance of the victims and 1 or<br />

12.50 per cent, were unavoidable.<br />

Fifty-five other persons were killed, including 1 mine foreman, 4<br />

assistant mine foremen, 1 fire boss, 10 doorboys and helpers, 1 doorman,<br />

3 brakemen, 2 footmen, 5 rockmen, 1 pillar boss, 2 carpenters,<br />

4 machine runners, 2 motormen, 2 engineers, 1 headman, 6 timbermen,<br />

1 road cleaner, 1 trackman, 1 patcher, 2 drillers, 2 bottommen,<br />

1 loader, 1 machinist and 1 fan turner. Of the 55 fatalities, 29 or<br />

52.73 per cent, were due to the carelessness' or ignorance of the victims,<br />

2 or 3.64 per cent, to the carelessness of others, 21 or 38.18<br />

per cent, were unavoidable and 3 or 5.45 per cent, responsibility not<br />

defined.<br />

Of the 527 accidents that occurred inside the mines, 325 or 61.67<br />

per cent, are attributed to the carelessness or ignorance of the victims<br />

themselves, 26 or 4.03 per cent, to the carelessness of others,<br />

161 or 30.55 per cent, were unavoidable and 15 or 2.85 per cent,<br />

responsibility not defined.
