Ahrens Agri
Introduction
Charlton feedmill and grain storage facility for Elders in Charlton, Victoria.
Ahrens has had a long association with
the agricultural sector in Australia for
more than 107 years. Through innovative
product development and the acquisition
of several silo manufacturing businesses,
we now supply a complete range of
grain storage and handling equipment to
farmers across Australia.
This experience, combined with our
Design & Construct, Steel Solutions and
Materials Handling capabilities, enables
us to provide intelligent and cost-effective
solutions in Australia for Agri Industrial
projects.
Our rapidly growing portfolio of projects
includes large commodity storage
facilities, complex conveying systems, and
multi-million dollar feedmills. Satisfied
and repeat clients include Mort & Co,
Graincorp, Laucke Mills, Inghams, Boral
and Blue Lake Milling.
Access to our specialist in-house site
erection crews, enables us to deliver Agri
Industrial projects in remote locations
throughout Australia. To support this, our
offices and steel fabrication facilities are
strategically located north of Adelaide
and in Olympic Dam (SA), in Perth and
Newman (WA), Darwin (NT) and Brisbane
and Toowoomba (QLD).
In addition to our steel fabrication
facilities, we manufacture transportable
silos and field bins. These are fabricated at
and distributed from five Agri workshops,
strategically located in regional towns
in South Australia, Victoria, New South
Wales and Queensland, as well as several
satelite operations, including one in
Tasmania.
As well as our Sherwell, Jaeschke and
Webster silos brands, we distribute a
range of other grain storage and handling
products, including augers, Pebco bulk
handling equipment and flat bottom silos.
Ahrens is certified to Australian and
international standards in safety,
quality and environment. In addition,
we are committed to engaging with
local communities and providing equal
employment opportunities, making us an
ideal partner for companies with a similar
ethos.
Safety
The safety of employees, sub-contractors
and visitors is our number one priority
every day at Ahrens. We are particularly
proud of our safety record, which is a
direct result of our commitment to the
ongoing education of employees in safe
operation and procedures.
Safety on construction sites and in
all workshops and offices is a shared
responsibility and all employees
understand and appreciate the
importance of adhering to documented
safety procedures. Regular ongoing
risk assessments and safe planning of
work takes place in all our workshops
and construction sites to identify major
hazards and take appropriate steps to
ensure the safety of everyone involved.
Certification
In June 2010, Ahrens achieved
certification in Health & Safety (AS
4801). This was achieved through the
introduction of new systems,
procedures and additional safety
initiatives. This significant milestone
represented a tremendous team effort
by everyone at Ahrens.
Employee Induction
All new employees are immediately
inducted by either the QHSE Manager or
relevant site Safety Co-ordinator. The
induction process highlights to new
employees the requirement to follow
procedures, identifies major risks and
hazards and familiarises them with
evacuation and emergency procedures.
Communication & Training
Regular “Toolbox” and Safety
Committee meetings are held with the
workforce to address safety concerns
and discuss and action areas for
improvement. Safety issues and
performance are regularly communicated
to employees through newsletters,
communication BBQs and weekly
updates. In addition, workshop and
office noticeboards display important information
and reminders. Ongoing training
is also provided for those employees
who work in high risk areas.
QHSE Management
Software System
This integrated software system
efficiently manages all hazard and incident
reports and maintains all of our
documented health and safety systems
and procedures. Ahrens has a tailored
system that meets documentation
requirements under Australian and New
Zealand standards for Safety, Quality and
Environment.
Workshop & Site Safety
Initiatives
We have introduced many safety
initiatives at our six primary
manufacturing sites and all of our
construction sites to ensure the safety of
our employees, sub-contractors, visitors
and the public. Site induction, safety
signage and Standard Operating
Procedures are fundamental to safety
in these areas, particularly for high risk
activities such as loading/unloading and
working at heights.
Ahrens Safe campaign
In 2011, we launched a workplace
safety campaign called “Ahrens Safe”.
The logo and a series of posters appear
throughout all of our businesses to
remind employees that “Every Individual
is Important”. Our aim is for every
employee to return home safely to their
family at the end of each work day.
Ahrens’ employees at Newman, WA participate in a training session.
Quality
At Ahrens, we aim to consistently provide
services that meet the requirements of
customers, both in terms of on-time
delivery, process and service quality.
Quality Management System
We have developed a Quality
Management System, based on
the requirements of the Australian
and International Standard AS/NZS
ISO 9001:2008, which provides a
comprehensive framework for our quality
systems and processes.
Our Quality Management System has
been set up to:
• improve internal efficiency;
• boost customer confidence;
• increase staff morale and productivity;
• identify system problems;
• identify new ways to solve problems; and
• promote continuous improvement.
All work undertaken at Ahrens, in
offices, workshops and on site, must
be compliant with the Australian and
International standard ISO 9001:2008.
Individual employees and management
Project Management Plans drive the quality process in all of our construction projects.
are required to work within the
parameters of specific systems,
procedures and processes.
We ensure our employees understand and
comply with the Quality Management
System policies, safe operating procedures
and work instructions as they apply to
their
day-to-day functions.
Project Management Plans
As part of our comprehensive Quality
Management System, we have
developed Pre-planning and Project
Management Plans for individual
construction and engineering projects.
This integrated approach to QHSE helps
us to identify risk areas and to eliminate
or manage these risks to ensure we are
able to deliver excellent products and
services on a consistent basis.
Continuous Improvement
At Ahrens, we are committed to
continuously improving our products and
services. By monitoring and objectively
measuring our performance, we are able
to determine if there are any weaknesses
or risk areas within our business. This
enables us to direct additional capital
or resources to these functions to effect
immediate improvement.
Quality
ISO 9001
Employees must comply with Quality Systems as they apply to their day-to-day functions.
Environment
At Ahrens, we have introduced
sustainable practices in order to improve
our environmental performance and
minimise our carbon footprint. We also
undertake to balance our economic,
environmental and social responsibilities
to ensure that our activities have a
positive impact on the communities in
which we live and work. Ahrens has
achieved certification to the International
Standard ISO14001. In addition, we
have developed an Environmental Policy
Statement to ensure we comply with
relevant statutory obligations and meet
the required standards of environmental
performance and reporting.
Sustainable Building Features
Many years of experience in the
design and construct of industrial and
commercial buildings has allowed
us to develop innovative design
features that utilise sustainable energy
solutions, such as natural light and
water. Typically, our larger buildings
incorporate environmentally sustainable
systems such as energy efficient and
automated lighting, solar heating,
rainwater harvesting for reticulation to
amenities and swales that retain large
volumes of groundwater for irrigation.
Rainwater harvesting and swales for irrigation are typical features of our industrial buildings.
In conjunction with our architectural
partners, we have a strong preference
for designs that incorporate natural
lighting and ventilation and materials
with superior thermal properties. Our
Design & Construct program also looks
at opportunities to use recycled materials
where possible and minimise ongoing
maintenance costs.
Custom Engineered Buildings
Our new, world-class steel
manufacturing facility in South Australia
has the ability to produce Custom-
Engineered Buildings (CEB), using
tapered web beams. Advanced software
allows us to create smart designs which
eliminate non-essential steel by up to
30% of the total frame, offering our
clients a more sustainable building
solution. Many of our recent Design &
Construct projects have incorporated
the use of tapered web beams as an
alternative to traditional parallel beams.
Oversesas, the benefits of CEB are well
recognised, and we are one of only a
few companies in Australia that offer
this option.
Kingsford Revegetation
Ahrens is the proud owner of a rural
property in the Barossa Valley known
as ‘Kingsford Homestead’, which
includes a heritage-listed homestead.
With assistance from Trees for Life and
the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges
Natural Resources Management Board,
we are revegetating this magnificent
property with native trees. The North Para
River, which runs through the property,
is an important catchment area for the
northern Adelaide region, and we are
committed to protecting this significant
watercourse with new fencing and
providing habitat for native animals and
birds through our tree-planting program.
Environment
ISO 14001
Paintline Water Recycling
Our paintline incorporates state-of-the-art
technology allowing us to recycle water
used during the painting process. The
paint by-product is significantly reduced
by adding a flocculant which congeals the
paint residue for collection and removal.
Our History
Ahrens is a fourth-generation family
company that has been in operation
for more than 100 years. The business
was established in 1906 at Sheaoak
Log in the Barossa Valley by Johann
Karl Wilhelm Ahrens (Wilhelm).
The Ahrens’ blacksmith shop at Sheaoak Log in the early 1900s.
For the first 50 years, Wilhelm and his
son, Bill, ran a blacksmith shop that
served the local farming community. In
1960 Bill’s son, Bob, joined the company
and being an entrepreneurial engineer,
he grew the business by extending its
product range to include grain silos, field
bins, rural sheds and stone and land rollers.
In the late 1970s, Ahrens began
fabricating its own structural steel at the
Sheaoak Log workshop. Construction
work in the Northern Territory, as well as
projects for the local wine industry, gave
the business a strong foundation and it
quickly established a reputation as a
cost-effective supplier of steel buildings.
Bob’s son, Stefan, started working for
Ahrens in 1988, initially in Production,
but later as a Project Manager/Estimator.
In 1995, Stef was appointed Managing
Director of Ahrens and since that time
has overseen the strategic growth and
expansion of its core business activities.
In 1998 and 2002, Ahrens acquired the
silo manufacturing and distribution
Bob, Marj, Stef and Leanne Ahrens.
businesses of Sherwell in South Australia
and Victoria and Webster in Queensland.
In 2003, Ahrens bought M&S Steel
Buildings and established a second steel
fabrication and construction base in
Queensland.
More recent Agri acquisitions include
MPH Rural’s silo operations in
Toowoomba, Queensland and Gilgandra,
New South Wales in 2010, and Jaeschke
Silos in Tarranyurk, Victoria in 2011.
The Agri division now has a footprint of
six primary manufacturing facilities in
Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria
and South Australia, as well as a satellite
operation in Tasmania.
In addition to expanding its Agri business
over the last decade, Stef has transformed
the business from a steel fabricator and
shed builder to a national Design &
Construct (D&C) industrial and
commercial builder. In 2003, Ahrens
opened a Brisbane office and a Materials
Handling office in Toowoomba in
2005. The growth of the D&C business
continued with the acquisition of
Allbuilt Constructions in Darwin in
2006, and the opening of a Perth
office in 2008.
Today, Ahrens’ national D&C
business, which includes
specialist Materials Handling
offices in Queensland and South
Australia, has the advantage of
sourcing steel from its own steel
fabrication facilities. Our Steel
Solutions division’s capabilities have been
extended with the addition of a semiautomated
Shot Blast and Paintline and a
world-class Custom Engineering Buildings
(CEB) line. The Steel Solutions division
supplies steel for the majority of Ahrens’
D&C projects, supplemented by overseas
fabricators. In 2010, Ahrens established
a Global Procurement office in China,
with our own quality team to ensure that
all imported products meet strict internal
standards.
In 2010, Ahrens purchased Mahon’s
Asset Management, in Newman,
Western Australia, and established a
Mining Services & Infrastructure division
to supply residential refurbishments,
town and mine maintenance,
accommodation services and infrastructure
to the Australian mining industry.
In 2012, Ahrens acquired Olympic Dam
Precision Engineering at Roxby Downs, a
machining and fabrication business.
Through a combination of organic
growth and acquisitions, Ahrens now
specialises in four key business areas –
Design & Construct, Steel, Mining and
Agri. Today, our national company is focused
on the safety and wellbeing of our
employees and sub-contractors, as well
as providing our customers with excellent
quality and service.
Competitive Advantage
At Ahrens, our vertically integrated
business enables us to offer clients
a “one-stop shop” from concept to
completion. By managing the entire
Design & Construct process in-house
we are able to better control the
program of works, costs and quality.
This enables us to consistently deliver
projects on time and on budget.
Our competitive advantage stems
from a great team of people, as well
as our extensive design, manufacturing
and construction resources and
experience.
In-house Design
Our team of experienced designers
use advanced engineering software to
produce drawings and designs that are
highly functional and fit-for-purpose.
We design the building or structure to
the client’s detailed specifications and
eliminate unnecessary costs, while still
meeting the requirements of Australian
and international building codes.
Collaboration with consultants, to provide
architectural designs and specialist
services, benefits our clients through
a greater pool of ideas, expertise and
resources.
Our designs respond positively to the local
environment and minimise maintenance
and operating costs. We have a strong
preference for buildings that incorporate
recycling, maximise the use of natural
Competitive Advantage
...from previous page
We work hard to ensure that client
objectives and outcomes are clearly
defined from the outset. Our handson
Project Management team drive
each project towards delivery, with an
emphasis on quality, cost and program.
Due to the size of our operation, we
negotiate best buy rates with our
suppliers and are also able to offer clients
the option of global procurement. We
can procure products from selected and
proven overseas suppliers, and we hold
up to 2,000 tonnes of steel in-house,
resulting in more competitive prices
and greater flexibility for supply and
delivery. The quality of purchased steel
and building components is continuously
monitored through a rigorous process of
internal and independent assessments.
Site Capabilities
Of enormous advantage to our clients, is
our ability to access and deploy in-house
building trades and multi-skilled site
crews to work anywhere in Australia.
Our teams of experienced boilermaker/
welders, riggers, crane drivers, carpenters
and cladding crews undertake work from
the foundation and erection of buildings,
through to carpentry and internal fitout.
Combined with access to our own
cranes, lifts and other mobile equipment,
our multi-skilled site crews enable us to
specialise in regional and remote area
construction.
Site Supervisors and other crew members
are fully accredited, trained in Safe
Operating Procedures and comply with
industry requirements for operating
machinery and working at heights.
Our innovative approach to buildability
is based on construction technqiues
which lend themselves to safety and
efficiency. The majority of our buildings
and structures are pre-assembled on the
ground before being panel lifted into
place. This method is far safer, more cost
competitive and improves the timing
program.
Pre-assembly on the ground is safer and more cost competitive.

Blue Lake Milling Hulling Room
Bordertown, South Australia
Construction time: 11 months | Project value: $4.4m
Ahrens was engaged by Blue Lake
Milling to design and construct a
processing facility for hulling raw oats
in regional SA.
Based on a supplied plant layout,
Ahrens designed and constructed
a four-storey building, plus offal
storage and truck loading structure
to incorporate raw material from
previously supplied Chief silos and
Hutchinson equipment.
The key features of this innovative
offal handling and truck loading
system include live bin bottoms,
augers and dustless loading spouts.
As well as building the structure,
Ahrens supplied and erected the
majority of the customised storage
and handling equipment, including:
• Screw conveyors from WAM Group;
• Industrial discharge valves and
chutes from Pebco;
• Specialist oat milling equipment
from Schreckle and Schrader; and
• Webster hopper bottom silos from
Ahrens.
The new facility will enable Blue
Lake Milling to expand and improve
productivity.
Queensland Bulk Terminals
Brisbane, Queensland
Construction time: 11 months | Project value: $4.63m
Ahrens made excellent use of its
vertically integrated capabilities,
including in-house design,
engineering, steel fabrication facilities
and sourcing equipment from
international suppliers, to deliver a
packing plant for end-user
Queensland Bulk Terminals. This
included a horizontal on-truck
container filling machine that can fill
two containers simultaneously.
The project included a series of 300
tonne/hr Skandia Drag Conveyors
and a Skandia Bucket Elevator, as
well as six Air-ride Belt Conveyors
and two Horizontal Container
Packers designed and constructed by
Ahrens.
In addition, the storage component
included eight 650-tonne
Webster hopper bottom silos and
four 30-tonne outload bins, all
manufactured in Ahrens’ Queensland
facility and erected and assembled
on site.
Completing the project are a series
of structural steel conveyor supports,
walkways, towers and buildings,
which were also designed, fabricated
and constructed by Ahrens.
Inghams Grain Storage Facility
Mount Maunganui, New Zealand
Construction time: 9 months | Project value: $4.6m
Ahrens was engaged to design and
construct two 8000-tonne grain
storage silos within the existing
Inghams Feedmill. These silos were
supplied by Chief, the conveyors
were sourced from Australia and the
structural elements were supplied by
selected NZ contractors.
The project also included foundations,
in-loading and out-loading
equipment, as well as support
structures. Ahrens’ solution to the
high seismic design requirements for
the site involved the construction of
a unique floating raft system for the
foundation.
Concrete pours were done at night
to ensure all access roads to the port
were clear and so that the existing
mill was able to remain operational.
The entire plant was constructed
within the confines of a live feedmill
with no delays to daily operational
requirements.
A review was conducted by Ahrens
to ensure compliance with the
relevant Australian and NZ codes and
standards.
Grassdale Feedmill
Dalby, Queensland
Construction time: 11 months | Project value: $6.3m
Ahrens designed and constructed
a steam-flaking plant and bulk
grain storage facility, as well as six
additional buildings, for an impressive
feedlot complex for Mort & Co.
The construction process ran
smoothly due to Ahrens undertaking
the entire project, from design to
manufacture and erection, as well as
the electrical work.
Three 650-tonne grain silos from
M&S, a division of Ahrens, coupled
with a 2,000-tonne silo, constructed
by Ahrens are the primary on-site
storage for the facility.
The key feature of the feedmill is the
fully automated milling capability with
three flaning mills which produce 90
tonnes per hour of steam-cooked
grain which caters for 62,000 head
of cattle.
Mort & Co is thrilled with the
results and is experiencing higher
productivity when compared to
industry benchmarks.
Further work is being undertaken by
Ahrens at the Grassdale facility.
“Grassdale is the largest greenfield feedlot constructed in
recent years and Ahrens readily accepted the challenge to
build it with outstanding results.” - Charlie Mort, Mort & Co
Graincorp Containerlink Plant
Brisbane, Queensland
Construction time: 8 months | Project value: $2.2m
Ahrens was engaged to relocate and
expand a container packing facility for
Graincorp Containerlink in Brisbane.
As a result of this project, the client
has integrated all of its packing
activities in one location, resulting in
more effective use of storage space
and increased productivity.
required dismantling the old plant in
a busy port facility and transporting
equipment on oversize loads.
Following the successful completion
of this project, Ahrens was engaged
to refurbish Graincorp’s port terminal
at Pinkenba.
Existing equipment had to be
incorporated into the new plant. This
Charlton Feedmill
Charlton, Victoria
Construction time: 11 months (two stages) | Project value: $5.2m
Safety and reliability was a key focus
of the design and construction of this
steam-flaking plant and bulk grain
storage facility for Elders.
Ahrens designed the elevated flaking
mills with no downstream mechanics
and built them around the existing
mill to maintain production at all
times.
The reliability and increased
productivity of the new plant, as well
as a higher level of safety throughout
the operation, delighted the client,
leading to additional contracts for
Ahrens.
