JACOB 2 EISENMENGER (MICHEL 1 ) was born June 6, 1805 in Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France. He married CATHERINE WALLER October 8, 1832 in Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France, daughter of MICHEL WALLER and ANNE PETER. She was born October 13, 1813 in Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France. Alsace-Lorraine is a region in northeastern France, on the French-German border. Switzerland lies to the south and Luxembourg to the north. Most of the population is Roman Catholic. For hundreds of years, the inhabitants have been part German and part French. Alsace and Lorraine have long been a prize in wars between France and Germany. In the A.D. 300’s and 400’s, Teutonic bands drove out the Celtic tribes then UNKNOWN in the region. Alsace-Lorraine became part of 30
Charlemangne’s empire in the late 1700’s but it fell to Germany when his grandsons divided his empire. Alsace and Lorraine remained under German rule until the 1500’s when France gained control of them by slow stages. The people fought efforts to turn them into French people. But the French Revolution of 1789 brought a change of heart. The Alsatian people became so French in spirit that more than 50,000 moved to France when Germany got almost all of Alsace in 1871. The Germans resented the loss of Alsace-Lorraine after World War 1. They regained control of the area in World War 11. The Germans moved thousands of the people out of the region and replaced them with Germans, Poles and Russians. The Allies drove the Germans out of Alsace-Lorraine in 1944-1945 and France again took control of the region. Generation No. 2 – Children of Jacob Eisenmenger & Catherine Waller 1. JACOB 3 EISENMENGER, b. July 22, 1833, Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France; d. November 5, 1912. m. PHILOMENA TSCHIRART. JACOB 3 EISENMENGER (JACOB 2 , MICHEL 1 ) was born July 22, 1833 in Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France, and died November 5, 1912. He married PHILOMENA TSCHIRART June 13, 1857 in St. Clements R.C. Church, St. Clements, ON, daughter of NICHOLAS TSCHIRHART and WALBOURGE WEITHAAS. She was born December 16, 1835 in Soppe Le Haut, Alsace, France., and died October 25, 1906. Jacob had three brothers. Jacob, Martin and Adam Eisenmenger left Alsace in January 1856 and landed in New York. Jacob came to Ontario, Martin went to California and Adam stayed in Rochester, New York. Jacob was a farmer in Wellesley Township. He had a farm in Linwood. Jacob and his wife Philomena raised a Neice - Florence Justina Ball - when her mother Agatha Tschirhart died. Jacob is buried in St. Clements Cemetery, St. Clements. He died of heart failure. Philomena Tschirart raised a neice, Florence Justina Ball. Philomena is buried in St. Clements Cemetery, St. Clements. 2. MARTIN EISENMENGER, b. May 2, 1835. 3. CATHERINE EISENMENGER, b. September 11, 1837. 4. ADAM EISENMENGER, b. December 19, 1840. 5. MARIE ANNE EISENMENGER, b. July 31, 1843. Generation No. 3 –Children of Jacob Eisenmenger & Philomena Tschirart 1. JOSEPH 4 EISENMENGER, b. May 7, 1858, Wellesley Township, ON; d. April 12, 1939. Joseph was a bachelor. He is buried in St. Clements Cemetery, St. Clements. 2. MARIE AGATHA EISENMENGER, b. March 27, 1860; d. 1952. MARIE AGATHA 4 EISENMENGER (JACOB 3 , JACOB 2 , MICHEL 1 ) was born March 27, 1860, and died 1952. She married JOSEPH RIFF February 21, 1882 in St. Clement's R.C. Church - St. Clement's, ON, son of JOHANNES RIFF and MARIANNE EGLE. He was born March 27, 1854 in Alsace, France, and died 1931. Buried in St. Martins Cemetery, Drayton, ON. Joseph Riff was a farmer and immigrated from France in 1873. He is buried in St. Martins Cemetery, Drayton, ON 31
