Charlemangne’s empire in the late 1700’s but it fell to Germany when his grandsons divided his empire.<br />

Alsace and Lorraine remained under German rule until the 1500’s when France gained control <strong>of</strong> them<br />

by slow stages. The people fought efforts to turn them into French people. But the French Revolution<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1789 brought a change <strong>of</strong> heart. The Alsatian people be<strong>ca</strong>me so French in spirit that more than<br />

50,000 moved to France when Germany got almost all <strong>of</strong> Alsace in 1871. The Germans resented the<br />

loss <strong>of</strong> Alsace-Lorraine after World War 1. They regained control <strong>of</strong> the area in World War 11. The<br />

Germans moved thousands <strong>of</strong> the people out <strong>of</strong> the region and replaced them with Germans, Poles and<br />

Russians. The Allies drove the Germans out <strong>of</strong> Alsace-Lorraine in 1944-1945 and France again took<br />

control <strong>of</strong> the region.<br />

1. JACOB 3 EISENMENGER, b. July 22, 1833, Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France; d. November 5,<br />

1912. m. PHILOMENA TSCHIRART. JACOB 3 EISENMENGER (JACOB 2 , MICHEL 1 ) was born July 22,<br />

1833 in Oberseebach, Alsace Lorraine, France, and died November 5, 1912. He married<br />

PHILOMENA TSCHIRART June 13, 1857 in St. Clements R.C. Church, St. Clements, ON,<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> NICHOLAS TSCHIRHART and WALBOURGE WEITHAAS. She was born December 16,<br />

1835 in Soppe Le Haut, Alsace, France., and died October 25, 1906. Jacob had three brothers.<br />

Jacob, Martin and Adam Eisenmenger left Alsace in January 1856 and landed in New York.<br />

Jacob <strong>ca</strong>me to Ontario, Martin went to California and Adam stayed in Rochester, New York.<br />

Jacob was a farmer in Wellesley Township. He had a farm in Linwood. Jacob and his wife<br />

Philomena raised a Neice - Florence Justina Ball - when her mother Agatha Tschirhart died.<br />

Jacob is buried in St. Clements Cemetery, St. Clements. He died <strong>of</strong> heart failure. Philomena<br />

Tschirart raised a neice, Florence Justina Ball. Philomena is buried in St. Clements Cemetery,<br />

St. Clements.<br />

1. JOSEPH 4 EISENMENGER, b. May 7, 1858, Wellesley Township, ON; d. April 12, 1939. Joseph<br />

was a bachelor. He is buried in St. Clements Cemetery, St. Clements.<br />

2. MARIE AGATHA EISENMENGER, b. March 27, 1860; d. 1952. MARIE AGATHA 4 EISENMENGER<br />

(JACOB 3 , JACOB 2 , MICHEL 1 ) was born March 27, 1860, and died 1952. She married JOSEPH RIFF<br />

February 21, 1882 in St. Clement's R.C. Church - St. Clement's, ON, son <strong>of</strong> JOHANNES RIFF and<br />

MARIANNE EGLE. He was born March 27, 1854 in Alsace, France, and died 1931. Buried in St.<br />

Martins Cemetery, Drayton, ON. Joseph Riff was a farmer and immigrated from France in 1873.<br />

He is buried in St. Martins Cemetery, Drayton, ON<br />
