From The Directors
Dear CYC Families,
As we draw a close on our sixth year in the Conspirare Youth Choirs, we can’t
help but beam with pride on all of the accomplishments our young singers
have made over the past nine months. After a wonderful summer excursion
to Hawaii, we were tired but ready to begin a new year! After welcoming
our newest members to the CYC during Kick-Off, we were off and running.
With our collaborative performances with Carmina Burana and La Follia,
our singers were put right into the middle of professional performances and
expectations, and WOW, did they rise to meet the challenges. Our winter
concert was beautifully moving once again. The spring semester was filled with
a new collaboration with The University of Texas Butler School of Music and
the St. John’s College Choir from Cambridge, England. It was a special sightseeing
some of our young singers laughing and eating lunch with their British
counterparts... building new bridges, indeed!
As we now close with our final spring performances, we count ourselves so
fortunate again for the families and singers who believe in the CYC and
invest their time and skills with our ensemble. We appreciate everything
that you have done to redirect your lives in carpools, changing your work
schedules, fundraising, keeping up with multiple e-mail, phone, and handout
communications. We appreciate the graceful way that you encourage your
children to make beautiful music each week. And most importantly, we
appreciate our young artists, our singers, for making a pledge to us each week
of giving the best of yourselves in creating art together. It is with humble hearts
and gratitude that we look back on this year. Thanks to all of you for making
it a special one!
Sincerely,
Rick Gabrillo
Old Dan Tucker...................................................................... Arr. Susan Brumfield
Old Dan Tucker’s a fine old man
Washed his face in a frying pan
Combed his hair with a wagon wheel
Died of a toothache in his heel
Get out the way for old Dan Tucker
He’s too late to get his supper
Supper’s over and the cook’s in bed
And old Dan Tucker’s got a pain in his head
Old Dan Tucker went to town
Riding a horse and leading a hound
The hound got loose in the middle of the street
Dan couldn’t catch him for his number ten feet!
Get out the way for old Dan Tucker
He’s too late to get his supper
Supper’s over, breakfast is a-cookin’
And old Dan Tucker stands a-lookin’
Old Dan Tucker sang for his supper
What shall we eat? White bread and butter
How can we eat without a knife?
How can he marry without a wife?
Old Dan Tucker’s back in town
Swingin’ them pretty girls all around
First to the right and then to the left
Then to the pretty girl you love best
Get out the way for old Dan Tucker
He’s too late to get his supper
Supper’s over and the dishes washed
And all that’s left is a piece of squash
Get out the way for old Dan Tucker
He’s too late to get his supper
Supper’s over, breakfast is a-cookin’
Old Dan stands a-lookin’
The Piper from Songs of Innocence by William Blake.......Music by Mary S. McAuliffe
Piping down the valleys wild,
Piping songs of pleasant glee,
On a cloud I saw a child,
And he laughing said to me:
“Pipe a song about a lamb.”
So I piped with merry cheer.
“Piper, pipe that song again!”
So I piped, he wept to hear.
“Drop thy pipe, thy happy pipe!
Sing thy songs of happy cheer!”
So I sang the same again
While he wept with joy to hear.
“Piper, sit thee down and write
In a book that all may read!”
So he vanished from my sight,
And I plucked a hollow reed.
And I made a rural pen,
And I stained the water clear,
And I wrote my happy songs,
Ev’ry child may joy to hear.
Mouth Music...............................................................Dolores Keane/John Faulkner
Dance to your shadow
When it’s good to be livin’ lad
Dance to your shadow
When there’s nothin’ better near ye
There are tunes in the river
Otter pools in the river
Water pools in the river
And the river calls him
Windy Nights..................................................................................arr. Kirk Aamot
Whenever the moon and stars are set
Whenever the wind is high
All night long through the dark and wet
The man goes riding by
Late in the night when the fires are out
Why does he gallop and gallop about?
Why does he gallop and gallop about? Why?
He comes again, he comes again,
High on the gallop he comes again.
Whenever the wind is high
Whenever the trees are crying out loud
And ships are tossed at sea
Ride on the highway low and loud
By at the gallop goes he
By at the gallop he goes
And then by he comes back at the gallop again
She Shall Have Music..............................................................................Nick Page
She shall have music wherever she goes
With plenty of rhythm to tickle her toes
Wherever she goes, she shall have music
She shall have songbirds to sing her to sleep
With plenty of dream birds to count up her sheep
Awake or asleep, she shall have music
And while she’s dreaming
I’ll write a dream song
And I’ll be hoping that
It will be our theme song
She shall have church bells to ring out in rhyme
So we can go marching in honeymoon time
She shall have music wherever she goes
Wraggle Taggle Gypsies..................................................................Mary McAuliffe
Three gypsies stood at the castle gate,
they sang so high, they sang so low,
the Lady sat in her chamber late,
her heart it melted away as snow.
They sang so sweet, they sang so shrill
that fast her tears began to flow,
and she laid down her silken gown,
her golden rings, and all her show.
She plucked off her high-heeled shoes
amade of Spanish leather, o.
She would in the street, with her bare, bare feet
all out in the wind and the weather, o.
Run along, Wraggle Taggle gypsies, oh!
Saddle to me my milk-white steed
and go and fetch me my pony o,
that I may ride and seek my bride
who is off with the Wraggle Taggle gypsies, o.
10
He rode high and he rode low,
he rode through the woods and the copses too
until he came to an open field
and there he espied his lady, o.
What makes you leave your house and land,
your golden treasures for to go?
What makes you leave your new wedded Lord
to follow the Wraggle Taggle gypsies oh?
“What care I for my house and land
What care I for my treasure oh?
What care I for my new wedded lord?
I’m off with the Wraggle Taggle gypsies o!”
“Last night you slept on a goose feather bed
with the sheets turned down so bravely o.
Tonight you’ll sleep in a cold open field
along with the Wraggle Taggle gypsies oh!”
“What care I for a goose feather bed
with the sheets turned down so bravely o?
Tonight I’ll sleep in a cold open field
along with the Wraggle Taggle gypsies oh!”
Bonny Bobby Shafto .................................English Sea Shanty arr. Edmund Walters
Bobby Shafto’s gone to sea,
Silver buckles at his knee,
When he comes back he’ll marry me,
Bonny Bobby Shafto.
He is my Bonny, my Bonny Bobby Shafto.
Bobby Shafto’s fat and fair,
He’s my love for evermair,
He is my Bonny Bobby Shafto.
If he turns his back on me,
Broken hearted I shall e;
There is none I love like he,
He is my Bonny Boby Shafto.
Away from the Roll of the Sea................................................arr. by Stuart Calvert
Small craft in a harbour that’s still and serene,
Give no indication what their ways have been;
They rock at their moorings all nestled in dreams,
Away from the roll of the sea.
Their stern lines are groaning a lullaby air,
A ghost in the cuddy, a gull on the spar;
11
But never they whisper of journeys afar,
Away from the roll of the sea.
Oh, had they the tongues for to speak,
What tales of adventure they’d weave;
But now they are anchored to sleep,
And slumber alee.
Come fair winds to wake them tomorrow, we pray,
Come harvest a-plenty to them ev’ry day;
Till guided by harbour lights they’re home to stay,
Away from the roll of the sea.
Simple Gifts (Shaker Song)......................................................Arr. Aaron Copland
‘Tis the gift to be simple, ‘tis the gift to be free,
‘Tis the gift to come down where you ought to be,
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
It will be in the valley of love and delight.
Refrain: When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed.
To turn, turn will be our delight,
‘Til by turning, turning we come round right.
Oliver Cromwell (Suffolk Nursery Rhyme)..........................Arr. Benjamin Britten
Oliver Cromwell lay buried and dead,
Hee-haw, buried and dead,
There grew an old apple-tree over his head,
Hee-haw, over his head.
The apples were ripe and ready to fall,
There came an old woman to gather them all,
Oliver rose and gave her a drop,
Which made the old woman go hippety hop,
The saddle and bridle, they lie on the shelf,
If you want any more your can sing it yourself,
Finale from Midsummer Night’s Dream.....................................Felix Mendelssohn
Thro’ this House give glim’ring light
By the dead and drowsy fire
ev’ry elf and fairy sprite
Hop as light as bird from brier!
And this ditty after me
Sing and dance it trippingly.
First, and rehearse then sing by rote:
12
To each word a whirling note,
Hand in hand with fairy grace,
Will we sing and bless this place.
Trip away, make no stay, meet him all by break of day!
Ching-a-ring Chaw..........................................................................Aaron Copland
Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching,
Ho a ding-a-ding kum larkee,
Brothers gather round,
Listen to this story,
‘Bout the promised land,
An’ the promised glory.
You don’t need to fear,
If you have no money,
You don’t need none there,
To buy you milk and honey.
There you’ll ride in style,
Coach with four white horses,
There the evenin’ meal,
Has one two three four courses.
Nights we all will dance
To the harp and fiddle,
Waltz and jig and prance,
“And Cast off down the middle!”
When the mornin’ come,
All in grand and splendour,
Stand out in the sun,
And hear the holy thunder!
Brothers hear me out,
The promised land’s a-comin’
Dance and sing and shout,
I hear them harps a strummin’.
voice recitals, teaching, and coaching. Dr. Fong had been
an accompanist for CYC since its inception. She also
expanded her role this year as the CYC Opera Coordinator.
Robin Kate Turman Administrative Manager. Robin
Kate Turman was born and raised in Austin, Texas. She is
an experienced performer and educator, having graduated
Magna Cum Laude from Texas State University in 2008
with a degree in Music Education, with a vocal emphasis.
At Texas State, under the tutelage of Juli Wood, Robin
Kate performed with the Opera Workshop in such
productions as Die Fledermaus, The Crucible, and The
Magic Flute (as Queen of the Night). She also won first
place at the National Association of Teachers of Singing
(NATS) regional competition in 2005 and 2006.
In 2006, Robin Kate studied abroad at Salzburg College
and performed as a soloist in the Mirabel Palace in Salzburg, Austria, as well as
studied at the Bratislava Conservatory in Slovakia in 2007. After graduation, she
taught music at P.S. 182 in the Bronx, New York with the NYC-based non-profit
organization Education Through Music. Currently, she teaches high school voice
lessons in Round Rock ISD and is enjoying working with the Conspirare Youth
Choirs, as well as planning her October wedding!
Shining Star
Scholarship Program
The Scholarship Program: The Conspirare Youth Choirs is fully
committed to finding and training young musicians with a deep focus and
love for choral singing, regardless of the obstacles that may prevent their
participation. In 2006-2007, the CYC created the Shining Star Scholarship
Program to support singers in the CYC. With generous donations, the CYC is
currently supporting full tuition and uniform costs for three singers.
During the spring, singers who are interested in being considered for this
scholarship will complete an application and participate in an audition with
the Conspirare Youth Choirs. Following the audition, a scholarship committee
will review the applications and audition results and select the singers who
best meet the criteria of the scholarship fund based upon skill, teacher
recommendations, prior musical experience, and financial need.
Support a Shining Star: Currently, we are seeking donations of $750,
which will provide tuition fees, transportation costs, uniform costs, music,
and rehearsal supplies for one singer for the entire 2010-2011 season (August
2010 to May 2011). We hope you will consider “adopting” a singer through
the Shining Star Scholarship Program. Your tax-deductible $750 contribution
to Conspirare will be a life-changing gift for one young singer who would not
have this opportunity without your generosity. If a full donation of $750 is not
possible for your family at the present time, we are always pleased to accept any
donation amount you make to this fund.
Other Ways to Support a Shining Star: It may also be possible
that a scholarship recipient may need transportation assistance. If you are
passionately committed to the goal of this scholarship fund but cannot
financially contribute at the present time, we invite you to become a volunteer
driver for this program. As a volunteer driver, you would be responsible for
the transportation of the singer from their home or school to each Conspirare
Youth Choirs rehearsal and performance. Volunteer drivers are vital to the
success of this program. You will ensure that our scholarship recipients have
consistent attendance, thereby receiving the highest possible musical training
and vocal instruction.
We hope you will consider joining these generous families and
organizations who have already contributed to the Shining Star
Scholarship Program: Anne, Manny, and Brennan Martinez; Lois
VanLaningham in Memory of Todd VanLaningham; Anonymous (2)
To contribute or volunteer for the Shining Star Scholarship Program or
for more information, please contact Rick Gabrillo at 512.476.5775 or
Conspirare Performing Note
Conspirare has the privilege of performing in a variety of beautiful venues. We
seek out acoustical and aesthetic environments that can best enhance choral
performances and we are deeply grateful to our hosts. While our performing
venues may represent specific traditions and the texts of some of our repertoire
may also be representative of specific traditions, it is in no way intended to be
exclusive of any individual whose experience or set of beliefs is not represented.
Conspirare respects and celebrates the great diversity of religious, artistic, and
human experiences represented among our singers and audience members. Our
shared musical experiences are intended to bring us together as we all seek to
be inspired by the power of great choral music. The audience creates the space
in which the music is held.
